Genesis 2

1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.*2.3 created…: Heb. created to make

4 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, 5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground. 6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.*2.6 there…: or, a mist which went up from, etc. 7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.*2.7 of the dust…: Heb. dust of the ground

8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. 9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. 10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. 11 The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; 12 And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon: the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia.*2.13 Ethiopia: Heb. Cush 14 And the name of the third river is Hiddekel: that is it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. 18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.*2.18 meet…: Heb. as before him 19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.*2.19 Adam: or, the man 20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.*2.20 gave: Heb. called

21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.*2.22 made: Heb. builded 23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.*2.23 Woman: Heb. Ish 24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. 25 And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

1 Ainsi furent achevés les cieux et la terre, et toute leur armée. 2 *Ex 20:11, 31, 17.De 5:14.Hé 4:4.Dieu acheva au septième jour son œuvre, qu’il avait faite: et il se reposa au septième jour de toute son œuvre, qu’il avait faite. 3 Dieu bénit le septième jour, et il le sanctifia, parce qu’en ce jour il se reposa de toute son œuvre qu’il avait créée en la faisant.

Formation de l’homme et de la femme

4 Voici les origines des cieux et de la terre, quand ils furent créés. Lorsque l’Éternel Dieu fit une terre et des cieux, 5 aucun arbuste des champs n’était encore sur la terre, et aucune herbe des champs ne germait encore: car l’Éternel Dieu n’avait pas fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n’y avait point d’homme pour cultiver le sol. 6 Mais une vapeur s’éleva de la terre, et arrosa toute la surface du sol. 7 L’Éternel Dieu forma l’homme de *1 Co 15:47.la poussière de la terre, il souffla dans ses narines un souffle de vie et l’homme devint *1 Co 15:45.un être vivant.

8 Puis l’Éternel Dieu planta un jardin en Éden, du côté de l’orient, et il y mit l’homme qu’il avait formé. 9 L’Éternel Dieu fit pousser du sol des arbres de toute espèce, agréables à voir et bons à manger, et *Ap 2:7.l’arbre de la vie au milieu du jardin, et l’arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal. 10 Un fleuve sortait d’Éden pour arroser le jardin, et de là il se divisait en quatre bras. 11 Le nom du premier est Pischon; c’est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Havila, où se trouve l’or. 12 L’or de ce pays est pur; on y trouve aussi le bdellium et la pierre d’onyx. 13 Le nom du second fleuve est Guihon; c’est celui qui entoure tout le pays de Cusch. 14 Le nom du troisième est Hiddékel; c’est celui qui coule à l’orient de l’Assyrie. Le quatrième fleuve, c’est l’Euphrate. 15 L’Éternel Dieu prit l’homme, et le plaça dans le jardin d’Éden pour le cultiver et pour le garder. 16 L’Éternel Dieu donna cet ordre à l’homme: Tu pourras manger de tous les arbres du jardin; 17 mais tu ne mangeras pas de l’arbre de la connaissance du bien et du mal, car le jour où tu en mangeras, tu mourras.

18 L’Éternel Dieu dit: Il n’est pas bon que l’homme soit seul; je lui ferai une aide semblable à lui. 19 L’Éternel Dieu forma de la terre tous les animaux des champs et tous les oiseaux du ciel, et il les fit venir vers l’homme, pour voir comment il les appellerait, et afin que tout être vivant portât le nom que lui donnerait l’homme. 20 Et l’homme donna des noms à tout le bétail, aux oiseaux du ciel et à tous les animaux des champs; mais, pour l’homme, il ne trouva point d’aide semblable à lui. 21 Alors l’Éternel Dieu fit tomber un profond sommeil sur l’homme, qui s’endormit; il prit une de ses côtes, et referma la chair à sa place. 22 L’Éternel Dieu forma une femme de la côte qu’il avait prise *1 Co 11:8.de l’homme, et il l’amena vers l’homme. 23 Et l’homme dit: Voici cette fois celle qui est *Mal 2:14.Ép 5:30,31.os de mes os et chair de ma chair! On l’appellera femme, parce qu’elle a été prise de l’homme. 24 *Mt 19:5.Mc 10:7.Ép 5:31.C’est pourquoi l’homme quittera son père et sa mère, et s’attachera à sa femme, *1 Co 6:16.Ép 5:28,29.et ils deviendront une seule chair.

Le jardin d’Éden, et le péché d’Adam

25 L’homme et sa femme étaient tous deux *Ge 3:7.nus, et ils n’en avaient point honte.
