1 [Aleph.] Comment est-il arrivé que le Seigneur a couvert de sa colère la fille de Sion tout à l’entour, comme d’une nuée, et qu’il a jeté des cieux en terre l’ornement d’Israël, et ne s’est point souvenu au jour de sa colère du marchepied de ses pieds?

2 [Beth.] Le Seigneur a abîmé, et n’a point épargné toutes les habitations de Jacob, il a ruiné par sa fureur les forteresses de la fille de Juda, [et] l’a jetée par terre; il a profané le Royaume et ses principaux.

3 [Guimel.] Il a retranché toute la force d’Israël par l’ardeur de sa colère; il a retiré sa dextre en arrière de devant l’ennemi; il s’est allumé dans Jacob comme un feu flamboyant, qui l’a consumé tout à l’environ.

4 [Daleth.] Il a tendu son arc comme un ennemi; sa dextre y a été appliquée comme celle d’un adversaire; et il a tué tout ce qui était agréable à l’œil dans le tabernacle de la fille de Sion; il a répandu sa fureur comme un feu.

5 [He.] Le Seigneur a été comme un ennemi ; il a abîmé Israël, il a abîmé tous ses palais, il a dissipé toutes ses forteresses, et il a multiplié dans la fille de Juda le deuil et l’affliction.

6 [Vau.] Il a mis en pièces avec violence son domicile, comme [la cabane] d’un jardin; il a détruit le lieu de son Assemblée; l’Eternel a fait oublier dans Sion la fête solennelle et le Sabbat, et il a rejeté dans l’indignation de sa colère le Roi et le Sacrificateur.

7 [Zajin.] Le Seigneur a rejeté au loin son autel, il a détruit son Sanctuaire; il a livré en la main de l’ennemi les murailles de ses palais; ils ont jeté leurs cris dans la maison de l’Eternel comme aux jours des fêtes solennelles.

8 [Heth.] L’Eternel s’est proposé de détruire la muraille de la fille de Sion; il y a étendu le cordeau, et il n’a point retenu sa main qu’il ne l’ait abîmée; et il a rendu désolé l’avant-mur, et la muraille, ils ont été détruits tous ensemble.

9 [Theth.] Ses portes sont enfoncées en terre, il a détruit et brisé ses barres; son Roi et ses principaux sont parmi les nations; la Loi n’[est] plus, même ses Prophètes n’ont trouvé aucune vision de par l’Eternel.

10 [Jod.] Les Anciens de la fille de Sion sont assis à terre, [et] se taisent; ils ont mis de la poudre sur leur tête, ils se sont ceints de sacs; les vierges de Jérusalem baissent leurs têtes vers la terre.

11 [Caph.] Mes yeux sont consumés à force de larmes, mes entrailles bruient, mon foie s’est répandu en terre, à cause de la plaie de la fille de mon peuple, parce que les petits enfants et ceux qui têtaient sont pâmés dans les places de la ville.

12 [Lamed.] Ils ont dit à leurs mères : où [est] le froment et le vin? lorsqu’ils tombaient en faiblesse dans les places de la ville, comme un homme blessé à mort, et qu’ils rendaient l’esprit au sein de leurs mères.

13 [Mem] Qui prendrai-je à témoin envers toi? Qui comparerai-je avec toi, fille de Jérusalem, et qui est-ce que je t’égalerai, afin que je te console, vierge fille de Sion; car ta plaie est grande comme une mer? Qui est celui qui te guérira?

14 [Nun.] Tes Prophètes t’ont prévu des choses vaines et frivoles, et ils n’ont point découvert ton iniquité pour détourner ta captivité; mais ils t’ont prévu des charges vaines, et propres à te faire chasser.

15 [Samech.] Tous les passants ont battu des mains sur toi, ils se sont moqués, et ils ont branlé leur tête contre la fille de Jérusalem, [en disant] : est-ce ici la ville de laquelle on disait : la parfaite en beauté; la joie de toute la terre?

16 [Pe.] Tous tes ennemis ont ouvert leur bouche sur toi, ils se sont moqués, ils ont grincé les dents, et ils ont dit : nous [les] avons abîmés; vraiment c’est ici la journée que nous attendions, nous [l’]avons trouvée, nous l’avons vue.

17 [Hajin.] L’Eternel a fait ce qu’il avait projeté, il a accompli sa parole qu’il avait ordonnée depuis longtemps; il a ruiné et n’a point épargné, il a réjoui sur toi l'ennemi, il a fait éclater la force de tes adversaires.

18 [Tsadi.] Leur cœur a crié au Seigneur. Muraille de la fille de Sion, fais couler des larmes jour et nuit, comme un torrent; ne te donne point de repos; [et] que la prunelle de tes yeux ne cesse point.

19 [Koph.] Lève-toi [et] t’écrie de nuit sur le commencement des veilles; répands ton cœur comme de l’eau en la présence du Seigneur; lève tes mains vers lui, pour l’âme de tes petits enfants qui pâment de faim aux coins de toutes les rues.

20 [Resch.] Regarde, ô Eternel! et considère à qui tu as ainsi fait. Les femmes n’ont-elles pas mangé leur fruit, les petits enfants qu’elles emmaillottaient? Le Sacrificateur et le Prophète n’ont-ils pas été tués dans le Sanctuaire du Seigneur?

21 [Scin.] Le jeune enfant et le vieillard ont été gisants à terre par les rues; mes vierges et mes gens d’élite sont tombés par l’épée; tu as tué au jour de ta colère, tu as massacré, tu n’as point épargné.

22 [Thau.] Tu as convié comme à un jour solennel mes frayeurs d’alentour, et nul n’est échappé, ni demeuré de reste au jour de la colère de l’Eternel; ceux que j’avais emmaillottés et élevés, mon ennemi les a consumés.

1 How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger!

He hath cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel,

And hath not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger.

2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied:

He hath thrown down in his wrath the strongholds of the daughter of Judah;

He hath brought them down to the ground; he hath profaned the kingdom and the princes thereof.

3 He hath cut off in fierce anger all the horn of Israel;

He hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy:

And he hath burned up Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about.

4 He hath bent his bow like an enemy, he hath stood with his right hand as an adversary,

And hath slain all that were pleasant to the eye:

In the tent of the daughter of Zion he hath poured out his wrath like fire.

5 The Lord is become as an enemy, he hath swallowed up Israel;

He hath swallowed up all her palaces, he hath destroyed his strongholds;

And he hath multiplied in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation.

6 And he hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were of a garden; he hath destroyed his place of assembly:

Jehovah hath caused solemn assembly and sabbath to be forgotten in Zion,

And hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest.

7 The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanctuary;

He hath given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces:

They have made a noise in the house of Jehovah, as in the day of a solemn assembly.

8 Jehovah hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion;

He hath stretched out the line, he hath not withdrawn his hand from destroying;

And he hath made the rampart and wall to lament; they languish together.

9 Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars:

Her king and her princes are among the nations where the law is not;

Yea, her prophets find no vision from Jehovah.

10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground, they keep silence;

They have cast up dust upon their heads; they have girded themselves with sackcloth:

The virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground.

11 Mine eyes do fail with tears, my heart is troubled;

My liver is poured upon the earth, because of the destruction of the daughter of my people,

Because the young children and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city.

12 They say to their mothers, Where is grain and wine?

When they swoon as the wounded in the streets of the city,

When their soul is poured out into their mothers’ bosom.

13 What shall I testify unto thee? what shall I liken to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem?

What shall I compare to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion?

For thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee?

14 Thy prophets have seen for thee false and foolish visions;

And they have not uncovered thine iniquity, to bring back thy captivity,

But have seen for thee false oracles and causes of banishment.

15 All that pass by clap their hands at thee;

They hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying,

Is this the city that men called The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth?

16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth wide against thee;

They hiss and gnash the teeth; they say, We have swallowed her up;

Certainly this is the day that we looked for; we have found, we have seen it.

17 Jehovah hath done that which he purposed; he hath fulfilled his word that he commanded in the days of old;

He hath thrown down, and hath not pitied:

And he hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee; he hath exalted the horn of thine adversaries.

18 Their heart cried unto the Lord:

O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night;

Give thyself no respite; let not the apple of thine eye cease.

19 Arise, cry out in the night, at the beginning of the watches;

Pour out thy heart like water before the face of the Lord:

Lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger at the head of every street.

20 See, O Jehovah, and behold to whom thou hast done thus!

Shall the women eat their fruit, the children that are dandled in the hands?

Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord?

21 The youth and the old man lie on the ground in the streets;

My virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword:

Thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger; thou hast slaughtered, and not pitied.

22 Thou hast called, as in the day of a solemn assembly, my terrors on every side;

And there was none that escaped or remained in the day of Jehovah’s anger:

Those that I have dandled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed.
