1 Or Naaman, Chef de l'armée du Roi de Syrie était un homme puissant auprès de son Seigneur, et il était en grand honneur, parce que l'Eternel avait délivré les Syriens par son moyen, mais cet homme fort et vaillant était lépreux.

2 Et quelques troupes sorties de Syrie, avaient amené prisonnière une petite fille du pays d'Israël, qui servait la femme de Naaman.

3 Et elle dit à sa maîtresse; Je souhaiterais que mon Seigneur [se présentât] devant le Prophète qui est en Samarie, il l'aurait aussitôt délivré de sa lèpre.

4 Quelqu'un donc vint et le rapporta à son Seigneur, en disant : La fille qui est du pays d'Israël, a dit telle et telle chose.

5 Et le Roi de Syrie dit [à Naaman]: Va, vas-y, et j'enverrai des Lettres au Roi d'Israël. [Naaman] donc s'en alla, et prit avec soi dix talents d'argent, et six mille pièces d'or, et dix robes de rechange.

6 Et il apporta au Roi d'Israël des Lettres de telle teneur. Maintenant, dès-que ces Lettres te seront parvenues, sache que je t'ai envoyé Naaman mon serviteur, afin que tu le délivres de sa lèpre.

7 Or, dès que le Roi d'Israël eut lu les Lettres il déchira ses vêtements, et dit : Suis-je Dieu pour faire mourir, et pour rendre la vie, que celui-ci envoie vers moi, pour délivrer un homme de sa lèpre? C'est pourquoi sachez maintenant, et voyez qu'il cherche occasion contre moi.

8 Mais il arriva que dès qu'Elisée, homme de Dieu, eut appris que le Roi d'Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, il envoya dire au Roi : Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu'il s'en vienne maintenant vers moi, et qu'il sache qu'il y a un Prophète en Israël.

9 Naaman donc s'en vint avec ses chevaux, et avec son chariot, et il se tint à la porte de la maison d'Elisée.

10 Et Elisée envoya un messager vers lui, pour lui dire : Va, et te lave sept fois au Jourdain, et ta chair te reviendra [telle qu'auparavant], et tu seras net.

11 Mais Naaman se mit en grande colère, et s'en alla, en disant : Voilà, je pensais en moi-même : Il sortira incontinent, et invoquera le Nom de l'Eternel son Dieu, et il avancera sa main sur l'endroit de la plaie, et délivrera le lépreux,

12 Abana et Parpar, fleuves de Damas, ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que toutes les eaux d'Israël? ne m'y laverais-je pas bien? mais deviendrais-je net? ainsi donc il s'en retournait, et s'en allait tout en colère.

13 Mais ses serviteurs s'approchèrent, et lui parlèrent, en disant : Mon père, si le Prophète t'eût dit quelque grande chose, ne l'eusses-tu pas faite? Combien plutôt donc [dois-tu faire] ce qu'il t'a dit : Lave-toi, et tu deviendras net?

14 Ainsi il descendit, et se plongea sept fois au Jourdain, suivant la parole de l'homme de Dieu; et sa chair lui revint semblable à la chair d'un petit enfant; et il fut net.

1 Now Naaman, chief of the army of the king of Aram, was a man of high position with his master, and greatly respected, because by him the Lord had given salvation to Aram; but he was a leper.

2 Now the Aramaeans had gone out in bands, and taken prisoner from Israel a little girl, who became servant to Naaman's wife.

3 And she said to her master's wife, If only my lord would go to the prophet in Samaria, he would make him well.

4 And someone went and said to his lord, This is what the girl from the land of Israel says.

5 So the king of Aram said, Go then; and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he went, taking with him ten talents of silver and six thousand shekels of gold, and ten changes of clothing.

6 And he took the letter to the king of Israel, in which the king of Aram had said, See, I have sent my servant Naaman to you to be made well, for he is a leper.

7 But the king of Israel, after reading the letter, was greatly troubled and said, Am I God, to give death and life? why does this man send a leper to me to be made well? is it not clear that he is looking for a cause of war?

8 Now Elisha, the man of God, hearing that the king of Israel had done this, sent to the king, saying, Why are you troubled? send the man to me, so that he may see that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 So Naaman, with all his horses and his carriages, came to the door of Elisha's house.

10 And Elisha sent a servant to him, saying, Go to Jordan, and after washing seven times in its waters your flesh will be well again and you will be clean.

11 But Naaman was angry and went away and said, I had the idea that he would come out to see such an important person as I am, and make prayer to the Lord his God, and with a wave of his hand over the place make the leper well.

12 Are not Abana and Pharpar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not be washed in them and become clean? So turning, he went away in wrath.

13 Then his servants came to him and said, If the prophet had given you orders to do some great thing, would you not have done it? how much more then, when he says to you, Be washed and become clean?

14 Then he went down seven times into the waters of Jordan, as the man of God had said; and his flesh became like the flesh of a little child again, and he was clean.
