1 Or le mari de Nahomi avait là un parent, homme fort et vaillant, de la famille d'Eli-mélec, qui avait nom Booz.
2 Et Ruth la Moabite dit à Nahomi : Je te prie que j'aille aux champs, et je glanerai quelques épis après celui devant lequel j'aurai trouvé grâce. Et elle lui répondit : Va, ma fille.
3 Elle s'en alla donc et entra dans un champ, et glana après les moissonneurs; et il arriva qu'elle se rencontra dans un champ qui appartenait à Booz, lequel [était] de la famille d'Eli-mélec.
4 Or voici, Booz vint de Bethléhem, et il dit aux moissonneurs : L'Eternel soit avec vous; et ils lui répondirent : L'Eternel te bénisse.
5 Puis Booz dit à son serviteur qui avait charge sur les moissonneurs : A qui est cette jeune fille?
6 Et le serviteur qui avait charge sur les moissonneurs, répondit, et dit : C'est une jeune femme Moabite, qui est venue avec Nahomi du pays de Moab.
7 Et elle nous a dit : Je vous prie que je glane, et que j'amasse quelques poignées après les moissonneurs; étant donc entrée elle est demeurée depuis le matin jusqu'à cette heure. C'est là le peu de temps qu'elle a demeuré en la maison.
8 Alors Booz dit à Ruth : Ecoute, ma fille, : ne va point glaner dans un autre champ, et même ne sors point d'ici ; et ne bouge point d'ici d'auprès de mes jeunes filles.
9 Regarde le champ où l'on moissonnera, et va après elles; n'ai-je pas défendu à mes garçons de te toucher? et si tu as soif, va aux vaisseaux, et bois de ce que les garçons auront puisé.
10 Alors elle tomba le visage contre terre, et se prosterna, et lui dit : Comment ai-je trouvé grâce devant toi, que tu me connaisses, vu que je suis étrangère?
11 Booz répondit, et lui dit : Tout ce que tu as fait à ta belle-mère, depuis que ton mari est mort, m'a été exactement rapporté; [et] comment tu as laissé ton père, et ta mère, et le pays de ta naissance, et tu es venue vers un peuple que tu n'avais point connu auparavant.
12 L'Eternel récompense ton œuvre, et que ton salaire soit entier de la part de l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël, sous les ailes duquel tu t'es venue retirer.
13 Et elle dit : Monseigneur, je trouve grâce devant toi, car tu m'as consolée, et tu as parlé selon le cœur de ta servante; et cependant je ne suis point autant que l'une de tes servantes.
14 Booz lui dit encore à l'heure du repas : Approche-toi d'ici, et mange du pain, et trempe ton morceau dans le vinaigre; et elle s'assit à côté des moissonneurs, et il lui donna du grain rôti, et elle en mangea, et fut rassasiée, et serra le reste.
15 Puis elle se leva pour glaner; et Booz commanda à ses garçons, en disant : Qu'elle glane même entre les javelles, et ne lui faites point de honte.
16 Et même vous lui laisserez, comme par mégarde, quelques poignées; vous les lui laisserez, et elle les recueillera, et vous ne [l'en] censurerez point.
17 Elle glana donc au champ jusqu'au soir, et elle battit ce quelle avait recueilli, et il y eut environ un Epha d'orge.
18 Et elle l'emporta, et vint en la ville; et sa belle-mère vit ce qu'elle avait glané. Elle tira aussi ce qu'elle avait serré de ce qu'elle avait eu de reste après qu'elle eut été rassasiée, et elle le lui donna.
19 Alors sa belle-mère lui dit : Où as-tu glané aujourd'hui, et où as-tu fait [ceci]? Béni soit celui qui t'a reconnue. Et elle déclara à sa belle-mère chez qui elle avait fait cela, et dit : L'homme chez qui j'ai fait ceci aujourd'hui, s'appelle Booz.
20 Et Nahomi dit à sa belle-fille : Béni soit-il de l'Eternel, puisqu'il a la même bonté pour les vivants [qu'il avait eue] pour les morts. Et Nahomi lui dit : Cet homme nous est proche parent, et il est un de ceux qui ont le droit de retrait lignager.
21 Et Ruth la Moabite dit : Et même il m'a dit : Ne bouge point d'avec les garçons qui m'appartiennent, jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient achevé toute la moisson qui m'appartient.
22 Et Nahomi dit à Ruth sa belle-fille : Ma fille, il est bon que tu sortes avec ses jeunes filles, et qu'on ne te rencontre point dans un autre champ.
23 Elle ne bougea donc point d'avec les jeunes filles de Booz, afin de glaner, jusqu'à ce que la moisson des orges et la moisson des froments fût achevée, puis elle se tint avec sa belle-mère.
1 And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband's, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi, Let me now go to the field, and glean ears of grain after him in whose sight I shall find grace. And she said unto her, Go, my daughter.
3 And she went, and came, and gleaned in the field after the reapers: and she happened to come to a part of the field belonging unto Boaz, who was of the kindred of Elimelech.
4 And, behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem, and said unto the reapers, The LORD be with you. And they answered him, The LORD bless you.
5 Then said Boaz unto his servant that was set over the reapers, Whose young woman is this?
6 And the servant that was set over the reapers answered and said, It is the Moabite young woman that came back with Naomi out of the country of Moab:
7 And she said, I pray you, let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves: so she came, and has continued even from the morning until now, except that she tarried a little in the house.
8 Then said Boaz unto Ruth, Will you not hear, my daughter? Go not to glean in another field, neither go from here, but abide here close by my maidens:
9 Let your eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch you? and when you are thirsty, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
10 Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in your eyes, that you should take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
11 And Boaz answered and said unto her, It has fully been shown me, all that you have done unto your mother-in-law since the death of your husband: and how you have left your father and your mother, and the land of your birth, and are come unto a people which you knew not before.
12 The LORD recompense your work, and a full reward be given you of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to trust.
13 Then she said, Let me find favor in your sight, my lord; for you have comforted me, and you have spoken kindly unto your handmaid, though I be not like unto one of your handmaidens.
14 And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come here, and eat of the bread, and dip your morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he passed to her parched grain, and she did eat, and was satisfied, and left.
15 And when she rose up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not:
16 And let fall also some of the handfuls on purpose for her, and leave them, that she may glean them, and rebuke her not.
17 So she gleaned in the field until evening, and beat out what she had gleaned: and it was about an ephah of barley.
18 And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her what she had reserved after she was satisfied.
19 And her mother-in-law said unto her, Where have you gleaned today? and where did you work? blessed be he that did take knowledge of you. And she showed her mother-in-law with whom she had worked, and said, The man's name with whom I worked today is Boaz.
20 And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who has not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is near of kin unto us, one of our closest kinsmen.
21 And Ruth the Moabitess said, He said unto me also, You shall keep near by my young men, until they have ended all my harvest.
22 And Naomi said unto Ruth her daughter-in-law, It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his maidens, that they encounter you not in any other field.
23 So she kept close by the maidens of Boaz to glean unto the end of barley harvest and of wheat harvest; and dwelt with her mother-in-law.
