Eclesiastes 2

ASV

Te Huakore o te Kaiapa

1 I mea ahau i roto i tōku ngākau, "Tēnā , ka whakamātauria koe e ahau ki te koa; , te āhuareka māu." Heoi, he horihori anō hoki tēnei. 2 Ko te kata, kīia iho e ahau "He haurangi;" ko te koa, "He mahi aha tāna?" 3 I whai ahau i roto i tōku ngākau me pēhea te whakaahuareka i tōku kikokiko ki te wāina me te whakahaere anō ia a tōku ngākau i ahau i runga i te whakaaro nui ā, me pēhea tāku hopu i te wairangi, kia kitea anō e ahau he aha tēnā mea pai a ngā tama a te tangata e mahia nei i raro i te rangi i ngā katoa e ora nei rātou.

4 I mahia e ahau ētahi mahi nunui māku; i hangā e ahau ētahi whare mōku; i whakatōkia e ahau ētahi māra wāina māku. 5 I hangā e ahau ētahi kāri māku, me ētahi māra rākau, whakatōkia iho e ahau ki reira ngā rākau katoa e whai hua ana. 6 I hangā e ahau he poka wai māku hei whakamākūkū mai i reira i te ngahere, i te wāhi i whakatupuria ai ngā rākau. 7 I hokona e ahau he pononga tāne, he pononga wāhine, ā, he pononga anō i whānau ki tōku whare; he tini hoki āku kāhui kau, āku kāhui hipi, maha atu i ā te hunga katoa i mua atu i ahau i Hiruhārama. 8 I āmenea mai anō e ahau he hiriwa, he kōura, me te taonga i rawe ki ngā kīngi, ki ngā kāwanatanga; i meatia anō e ahau he kaiwaiata, tāne, he kaiwaiata wāhine, me ngā āhuareka anō a ngā tama a te tangata, te tini o te wāhine iti.

9 Heoi, kua nui ahau, neke noa ake ana āku i ā te hunga katoa i mua ake i ahau i Hiruhārama, me te mau anō hoki tōku whakaaro nui.

10 Ko ngā mea katoa anō hoki i hiahiatia e ōku kanohi,

kīhai i kaiponuhia e ahau i a rāua,

kīhai anō i pēhia e ahau tōku ngākau i te meatanga atu ki tētahi whakahari;

i hari hoki tōku ngākau i ōku ruhatanga katoa;

ā, ko te wāhi tēnei māku o ōku ruhatanga katoa.

11 Kātahi ahau ka titiro ki ngā mahi katoa i mahia e ōku ringa,

ki te ruhatanga hoki i ruha ai ahau i te mahinga;

nanā, he horihori katoa, he whai kau i te hau,

ā, kāhore he hua pai i raro i te .

Te Whakaaronui me te Wairangi

12 I anga anō ahau ki te mātakitaki ki te whakaaro nui,

ki te haurangi, ki te wairangi;

he aha koia te mea e taea e te tangata e haere mai ana i muri i te kīngi?

Heoi anō ko te mea kua oti noa ake.

13 Kātahi ahau ka kite, hira ake te whakaaro nui i te wairangi;

he pērā hoki me te mārama e hira ake ana i te pōuri.

14 Ko te tangata whakaaro nui,

kei tōna māhunga ōna kanohi,

ā, kei te pōuri te wairangi e haere ana.

Otiia, i kite anō ahau kotahi tonu te mea e ana ki a rātou katoa.

15 Kātahi ahau ka ake i roto i tōku ngākau,

"Ko te mea i ki te wairangi ka anō ki ahau nei anō hoki;

he aha hoki ōku whakaaro i nui ake ai?"

, ko tāku kīanga ake i roto i tōku ngākau,

"He horihori anō hoki tēnei."

16 te mea kāhore he maharatanga ki te tangata whakaaro nui,

pērā anō i te kore ki te wairangi ā ake ake;

inā hoki i ngā e haere ake nei kua wareware noa ake ngā mea katoa.

, ko te tangata whakaaro nui tōna matenga, pērā anō i te wairangi!

17 , kua kino ahau ki te ora; te mea he ki ahau te mahi e mahia ana i raro i te ; he horihori katoa hoki, he whai kau i te hau. 18 I kino anō hoki ahau ki tōku māuiui i māuiui ai ahau i raro i te ; inā hoki me waiho iho e ahau te tangata i muri i ahau. 19 Ko wai hoki e mōhio ana hei tangata whakaaro nui rānei ia, hei wairangi rānei? Otiia, hei a ia te tikanga ōku māuiui katoa i māuiui ai ahau, i nui ai anō hoki ōku whakaaro i raro i te . He horihori anō hoki tēnei. 20 , ka anga ahau, ka mea kia whakaparahako tōku ngākau ki te māuiui katoa i māuiui ai ahau i raro i te . 21 Tēnei hoki tētahi tangata kei runga nei i te whakaaro nui tāna mahi, kei runga i te mātauranga, kei runga i te mōhio; otiia ka waiho e ia hei wāhi te tangata kīhai nei i mahi. He horihori anō tēnei, he nui. 22 He aha oti te tukunga iho ki te tangata o tōna māuiui katoa, o te ngana o tōna ngākau i māuiui ai ia i raro i te ? 23 He pōuri kau hoki ōna katoa, he ngākau mamae tōna raruraru, e kore anō hoki tōna ngākau e okioki i te . , he horihori anō hoki tēnei.

24 Kāhore he mea pai te tangata i tua atu i te kai, i te inu, i te mea kia whiwhi tōna wairua i te pai i roto i tōna māuiui. I kite anō hoki ahau i tēnei, te ringa o te Atua tēnei. 25 Ko wai oti e nui atu tāna kai, ko wai e reka ake i ahau? 26 Ki te tangata hoki e pai ana ki te Atua aroaro e hōmai ana e ia he whakaaro nui, he mātauranga, he koa; ki te tangata hara ia e hōmai ana e ia he raruraru, ki te kohikohi, ki te āmene mea mai, hei hoatutanga māna ki te tangata e pai ana ki te Atua aroaro. He horihori anō hoki tēnei, he whai i te hau.

1 I said in my heart, Come now, I will prove thee with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also was vanity. 2 I said of laughter, It is mad; and of mirth, What doeth it? 3 I searched in my heart how to cheer my flesh with wine, my heart yet guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what it was good for the sons of men that they should do under heaven all the days of their life. 4 I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards; 5 I made me gardens and parks, and I planted trees in them of all kinds of fruit; 6 I made me pools of water, to water therefrom the forest where trees were reared; 7 I bought men-servants and maid-servants, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of herds and flocks, above all that were before me in Jerusalem; 8 I gathered me also silver and gold, and the treasure of kings and of the provinces; I gat me men-singers and women-singers, and the delights of the sons of men, musical instruments, and that of all sorts. 9 So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me. 10 And whatsoever mine eyes desired I kept not from them; I withheld not my heart from any joy; for my heart rejoiced because of all my labor; and this was my portion from all my labor. 11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labor that I had labored to do; and, behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was no profit under the sun.

12 And I turned myself to behold wisdom, and madness, and folly: for what can the man do that cometh after the king? even that which hath been done long ago. 13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness. 14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head, and the fool walketh in darkness: and yet I perceived that one event happeneth to them all. 15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool! 17 So I hated life, because the work that is wrought under the sun was grievous unto me; for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

18 And I hated all my labor wherein I labored under the sun, seeing that I must leave it unto the man that shall be after me. 19 And who knoweth whether he will be a wise man or a fool? yet will he have rule over all my labor wherein I have labored, and wherein I have showed myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity. 20 Therefore I turned about to cause my heart to despair concerning all the labor wherein I had labored under the sun. 21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, and with knowledge, and with skilfulness; yet to a man that hath not labored therein shall he leave it for his portion. This also is vanity and a great evil. 22 For what hath a man of all his labor, and of the striving of his heart, wherein he laboreth under the sun? 23 For all his days are but sorrows, and his travail is grief; yea, even in the night his heart taketh no rest. This also is vanity.

24 There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good in his labor. This also I saw, that it is from the hand of God. 25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I? 26 For to the man that pleaseth him God giveth wisdom, and knowledge, and joy; but to the sinner he giveth travail, to gather and to heap up, that he may give to him that pleaseth God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
