Te Īnoi a Hona
1 Kātahi a Hona ka īnoi ki a Ihowā, ki tōna Atua, i roto i te kōpū o te ika. 2 I mea ia:
"I karanga ahau, he ngākau mamae nōku, ki a Ihowā;
ā, whakahoki mai ana ia ki ahau;
i tangi atu ahau i roto i te kōpū o te rēinga,
ā, whakarongo ana koe ki tōku reo.
3 I makā hoki ahau e koe ki te rire,
ki waenga moana,
ā, karapotia ana ahau e ngā roma;
tika ana āu tūātea katoa me āu ngaru
i runga i ahau.
4 Nā, ka mea ahau, ‘Kua oti ahau te pei
i mua i ōu kanohi;
otiia tērā ahau e titiro atu anō
ki tōu temepara tapu.’
5 Karapotia ana ahau e te wai,
tae tonu iho ki te wairua;
i ōku taha katoa te rire ā taka noa;
he rimu ngā tākai o tōku māhunga.
6 I haere ahau ki raro ki ngā take o ngā maunga;
kopia ana ahau e te whenua me ōna tūtaki ake ake;
heoi whakaputaina ake ana e koe tōku ora i roto i te poka,
e Ihowā, e tōku Atua.
7 "I te hemonga o tōku wairua i roto i ahau,
i mahara ahau ki a Ihowā;
i tae atu anō tāku īnoi ki a koe
ki tōu temepara tapu.
8 "Ko te hunga e pupuri ana i ngā mea tekateka noa
e whakarere ana i te atawhai mō rātou.
9 Ko ahau ia ka mea patunga tapu ki a koe
i runga i te reo whakawhetai;
ka whakamanā e ahau āku kupu taurangi.
Nā Ihowā te whakaoranga!"
10 Nā, ka kōrero a Ihowā ki te ika, ā, ka ruakina e tērā a Hona ki te wāhi maroke.
1 Then Jonah prayed unto Jehovah his God out of the fish’s belly. 2 And he said,
I called by reason of mine affliction unto Jehovah,
And he answered me;
Out of the belly of Sheol cried I,
And thou heardest my voice.
3 For thou didst cast me into the depth, in the heart of the seas,
And the flood was round about me;
All thy waves and thy billows passed over me.
4 And I said, I am cast out from before thine eyes;
Yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.
5 The waters compassed me about, even to the soul;
The deep was round about me;
The weeds were wrapped about my head.
6 I went down to the bottoms of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed upon me for ever:
Yet hast thou brought up my life from the pit, O Jehovah my God.
7 When my soul fainted within me, I remembered Jehovah;
And my prayer came in unto thee, into thy holy temple.
8 They that regard lying vanities
Forsake their own mercy.
9 But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving;
I will pay that which I have vowed.
Salvation is of Jehovah.
10 And Jehovah spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land.
