1 Guarde o pé, quando você entrar na Casa de Deus. Chegar-se para ouvir é melhor do que oferecer um sacrifício de tolos, que fazem o mal sem se dar conta. 2 Que a sua boca não se precipite, nem se apresse o seu coração em pronunciar uma palavra diante de Deus. Porque Deus está nos céus, e você, aqui na terra. Portanto, sejam poucas as suas palavras. 3 Porque das muitas preocupações vêm os sonhos, e do muito falar, palavras tolas.

4 Quando você fizer algum voto a Deus, não demore a cumpri-lo, pois ele não se agrada de tolos. Cumpra o voto que você faz. 5 Melhor é não fazer voto do que fazer e não cumprir. 6 Não consinta que a sua boca o leve a pecar, nem diga ao mensageiro de Deus que foi descuido. Por que fazer com que Deus fique irado por causa do que você diz e deixar que ele destrua o que você fez? 7 Porque, como na multidão dos sonhos há vaidade, assim também nas muitas palavras. Portanto, tema a Deus.

8 Se você notar em alguma província opressão de pobres e roubo em lugar do direito e da justiça, não fique admirado com isso; porque o que está num posto elevado tem acima de si outro mais elevado que o explora, e sobre estes há ainda outros mais elevados que também exploram. 9 O proveito da terra é para todos; até o rei se serve do campo.

10 Quem ama o dinheiro jamais se fartará de dinheiro; e quem ama a abundância nunca ficará satisfeito com o que ganha. Também isto é vaidade. 11 Onde os bens se multiplicam, também se multiplicam os que deles comem. E que proveito têm os donos, a não ser o de ver esses bens com os seus olhos? 12 Doce é o sono do trabalhador, quer coma pouco, quer muito; mas a fartura do rico não o deixa dormir.

13 Há um grave mal que vi debaixo do sol: as riquezas que os seus donos guardam para o seu próprio prejuízo. 14 E, se essas riquezas se perdem num mau negócio, o filho que esse homem gerou ficará de mãos vazias. 15 Como saiu do ventre de sua mãe, a saber, nu, assim voltará, indo-se como veio; e do seu trabalho nada poderá levar consigo. 16 Também isto é um grave mal: precisamente como veio, assim ele vai. E que proveito terá de haver trabalhado para o vento? 17 Em todos os seus dias, comeu o seu pão nas trevas, com muito enfado, com enfermidades e indignação.

18 Eis o que eu vi: boa e bela coisa é comer e beber e desfrutar o que conseguiu de todo o seu trabalho, com que se afadigou debaixo do sol, durante os poucos dias da vida que Deus lhe deu; porque esta é a sua porção. 19 Quanto àquele a quem Deus conferiu riquezas e bens e lhe deu poder para deles comer, receber a sua porção e desfrutar do seu trabalho, isto é dom de Deus. 20 Porque não ficará pensando muito nos dias da sua vida, pois Deus lhe enche o coração de alegria.

1 Keep thy foot when thou go to the house of God, for to draw near to hear is better than to give the sacrifice of fools. For they know not that they do evil.2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thy heart be hasty to utter anything before God. For God is in heaven, and thou upon earth. Therefore let thy words be few.3 For a dream comes with a multitude of business, and a fool's voice with a multitude of words.4 When thou vow a vow to God, defer not to pay it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay that which thou vow.5 Better is it that thou should not vow, than that thou should vow and not pay.6 Do not allow thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin, nor say thou before the [heavenly] agent, that is was an error. Why should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thy hands?7 For in the multitude of dreams there are vanities, and in many words. But fear thou God.8 If thou see the oppression of a poor man, and the violent wresting of justice and righteousness in a province, marvel not at the matter. For [a man] higher than the high is observing, and there are higher [men] than they.9 Moreover the abundance of the land is for all. The king [himself] is served by the field.10 He who loves silver shall not be satisfied with silver, nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.11 When goods increase, they are increased who eat them. And what advantage is there to the owner of it, except the beholding [of them] with his eyes?12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much, but the fullness of the rich will not allow him to sleep.13 There is a grievous evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches [were] kept by the owner of it to his hurt.14 And those riches perish in a bad venture. And if he has begotten a son, there is nothing in his hand.15 As he came forth from his mother's womb, naked shall he go again as he came, and shall take nothing for his labor, which he may carry away in his hand.16 And this also is a grievous evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go. And what profit has he that he labored for the wind?17 All his days also he eats in gloom, and he is greatly troubled, and has depression and anger.18 Behold, that which I have seen to be good and to be fitting is [for a man] to eat and to drink, and to enjoy good in all his labor in which he labors under the sun all the days of his life which God has given him, for this is his p19 Every man also to whom God has given riches and wealth, and has given him power to eat of it, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labor--this is the gift of God.20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life, because God answers [him] in the joy of his heart.
