1 Quando chegou o sétimo mês e os filhos de Israel já estavam morando nas suas cidades, o povo se reuniu, como um só homem, em Jerusalém. 2 Então levantou-se Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e seus irmãos, sacerdotes, e Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e seus irmãos e edificaram o altar do Deus de Israel, para oferecerem holocaustos sobre ele, como está escrito na Lei de Moisés, homem de Deus. 3 Firmaram o altar sobre as suas bases; e, apesar de estarem sob o terror dos povos de outras terras, ofereceram sobre ele holocaustos ao Senhor, de manhã e de tarde. 4 Celebraram a Festa dos Tabernáculos, como está escrito, e ofereceram holocaustos diários, segundo o número ordenado para cada dia. 5 Depois disto, ofereceram o holocausto contínuo e os sacrifícios das Festas da Lua Nova e de todas as festas fixas do Senhor, bem como os sacrifícios dos que traziam ofertas voluntárias ao Senhor. 6 Desde o primeiro dia do sétimo mês, começaram a oferecer holocaustos ao Senhor, embora ainda não tivessem sido postos os fundamentos do templo do Senhor.

7 Então deram dinheiro aos pedreiros e aos carpinteiros, bem como comida, bebida e azeite aos homens de Tiro e de Sidom, para trazerem do Líbano madeira de cedro até o mar, até Jope, segundo a permissão que lhes tinha dado Ciro, rei da Pérsia.

8 No segundo ano depois que eles voltaram à Casa de Deus, em Jerusalém, no segundo mês, Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, e Jesua, filho de Jozadaque, e os seus outros irmãos, sacerdotes e levitas, e todos os que voltaram do cativeiro a Jerusalém puseram mãos à obra e constituíram levitas com mais de vinte anos para supervisionar a reconstrução da Casa do Senhor. 9 Então se apresentaram Jesua com os seus filhos e os seus irmãos, Cadmiel e os seus filhos, os filhos de Judá, para juntamente supervisionarem os que faziam a obra na Casa de Deus, bem como os filhos de Henadade, seus filhos e seus irmãos, os levitas.

10 Quando os construtores lançaram os alicerces do templo do Senhor, apresentaram-se os sacerdotes, paramentados e com trombetas, e os levitas, filhos de Asafe, com címbalos, para louvarem o Senhor, segundo as instruções deixadas por Davi, rei de Israel. 11 Cantavam responsivamente, louvando e dando graças ao Senhor, com estas palavras:

Ele é bom,

porque a sua misericórdia

dura para sempre sobre Israel.

E todo o povo jubilou com altas vozes, louvando o Senhor por terem sido lançados os alicerces da Casa do Senhor. 12 Porém muitos dos sacerdotes, levitas e chefes de famílias, já idosos, que tinham visto o primeiro templo, choraram em alta voz quando, diante de seus olhos, foram lançados os alicerces deste templo; muitos, no entanto, levantaram as vozes com gritos de alegria. 13 E assim não se podiam distinguir as vozes de alegria das vozes do choro do povo; pois o povo gritava tão alto, que as vozes se ouviam de longe.

1 And when the seventh month came, and the sons of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem.2 Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brothers the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brothers, stood up and built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt-offerings on it as it is written in the law of M3 And they set the altar upon its base, for fear was upon them because of the peoples of the countries. And they offered burnt-offerings on it to LORD, even burnt-offerings morning and evening.4 And they kept the feast of tabernacles as it is written, and [offered] the daily burnt-offerings by number according to the ordinance, as the duty of every day required.5 And afterward the continual burnt-offering, and [the offerings] of the new moons, and of all the set feasts of LORD that were consecrated, and of everyone who willingly offered a freewill-offering to LORD.6 From the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt-offerings to LORD. But the foundation of the temple of LORD was not yet laid.7 Also they gave money to the masons, and to the carpenters, and food, and drink, and oil, to those of Sidon, and to those of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea, to Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus8 Now in the second year of their coming to the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the rest of their brothers the priests and the Levites, and all those9 Then Jeshua with his sons and his brothers, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, stood together to have the oversight of the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brothers the Levites.10 And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise LORD, after the order of David king of Israel.11 And they sang one to another in praising and giving thanks to LORD, [saying], For he is good, for his loving kindness [is] forever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised LORD, because the fo12 But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers, the old men who had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice, and many shouted aloud for joy.13 So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people, for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.
