1 Portanto, meus amados, tendo tais promessas, purifiquemo-nos de toda impureza, tanto da carne como do espírito, aperfeiçoando a nossa santidade no temor de Deus.

2 Pedimos que vocês nos acolham em seu coração. Não tratamos ninguém com injustiça, não prejudicamos ninguém, não exploramos ninguém. 3 Não falo para condenar vocês. Porque eu já disse que vocês estão em nosso coração para, juntos, morrermos e vivermos. 4 Estou sendo bem franco com vocês e tenho muito orgulho de vocês. Sinto-me grandemente confortado e transbordo de alegria em meio a toda a nossa tribulação.

5 Porque, quando chegamos à Macedônia, não tivemos nenhum alívio. Pelo contrário, em tudo fomos atribulados: lutas por fora, temores por dentro. 6 Porém Deus, que consola os abatidos, nos consolou com a chegada de Tito. 7 E não somente com a chegada dele, mas também pelo consolo que recebeu de vocês. Ele nos falou da saudade, do pranto e do zelo que vocês têm por mim, aumentando, assim, a minha alegria.

8 Porque, mesmo que eu tenha entristecido vocês com a minha carta, não me arrependo — embora já tenha me arrependido, pois vi que aquela carta os deixou tristes, ainda que por breve tempo. 9 Mas agora me alegro, não porque vocês ficaram tristes, mas porque essa tristeza os levou ao arrependimento. Pois vocês foram entristecidos segundo Deus, para que, de nossa parte, não sofressem nenhum dano. 10 Porque a tristeza segundo Deus produz arrependimento para a salvação, que a ninguém traz pesar; mas a tristeza do mundo produz morte. 11 Vejam quanto cuidado produziu em vocês o fato de serem entristecidos segundo Deus! Que defesa, que indignação, que temor, que saudade, que zelo, que desejo de punir o culpado! Em tudo vocês se mostraram inocentes neste assunto.

12 Portanto, embora eu tenha escrito aquela carta, não foi por causa daquele que fez o mal, nem por causa daquele que sofreu a afronta, mas para que fosse manifesto entre vocês, diante de Deus, o cuidado que vocês têm por nós. 13 Foi por isso que nos sentimos consolados.

E, acima desta nossa consolação, muito mais nos alegramos pelo contentamento de Tito, porque todos vocês trouxeram refrigério ao espírito dele. 14 Porque, se falei a ele com certo orgulho a respeito de vocês, não fiquei envergonhado. Pelo contrário, como tudo que falamos a vocês era verdade, também os elogios que, na presença de Tito, fizemos a respeito de vocês se mostraram verdadeiros. 15 E o grande afeto que ele tem por vocês aumenta cada vez mais, quando ele se lembra da obediência de todos vocês, de como o receberam com temor e tremor. 16 Alegro-me porque, em tudo, posso confiar em vocês.

1 Having therefore these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

2 Open your hearts to us: we wronged no man, we corrupted no man, we took advantage of no man. 3 I say it not to condemn you: for I have said before, that ye are in our hearts to die together and live together. 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you, great is my glorying on your behalf: I am filled with comfort, I overflow with joy in all our affliction.

5 For even when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no relief, but we were afflicted on every side; without were fightings, within were fears. 6 Nevertheless he that comforteth the lowly, even God, comforted us by the coming of Titus; 7 and not by his coming only, but also by the comfort wherewith he was comforted in you, while he told us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced yet more. 8 For though I made you sorry with my epistle, I do not regret it: though I did regret it (for I see that that epistle made you sorry, though but for a season), 9 I now rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye were made sorry unto repentance; for ye were made sorry after a godly sort, that ye might suffer loss by us in nothing. 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance unto salvation, a repentance which bringeth no regret: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold, this selfsame thing, that ye were made sorry after a godly sort, what earnest care it wrought in you, yea what clearing of yourselves, yea what indignation, yea what fear, yea what longing, yea what zeal, yea what avenging! In everything ye approved yourselves to be pure in the matter. 12 So although I wrote unto you, I wrote not for his cause that did the wrong, nor for his cause that suffered the wrong, but that your earnest care for us might be made manifest unto you in the sight of God. 13 Therefore we have been comforted: and in our comfort we joyed the more exceedingly for the joy of Titus, because his spirit hath been refreshed by you all. 14 For if in anything I have gloried to him on your behalf, I was not put to shame; but as we spake all things to you in truth, so our glorying also which I made before Titus was found to be truth. 15 And his affection is more abundantly toward you, while he remembereth the obedience of you all, how with fear and trembling ye received him. 16 I rejoice that in everything I am of good courage concerning you.
