1 Depois disto, Davi consultou o Senhor, dizendo:

— Devo ir a alguma das cidades de Judá?

E o Senhor respondeu:

— Vá, sim.

Davi perguntou:

— Para onde devo ir?

O Senhor respondeu:

— Para Hebrom.

2 Davi foi para lá, levando consigo as suas duas mulheres, Ainoã, a jezreelita, e Abigail, a viúva de Nabal, o carmelita. 3 Davi levou também os homens que estavam com ele, cada um com a sua família, e eles ficaram morando nas aldeias de Hebrom. 4 Então vieram os homens de Judá e ali ungiram Davi rei sobre a casa de Judá.

E informaram a Davi que os homens de Jabes-Gileade tinham sepultado Saul. 5 Então Davi enviou mensageiros aos homens de Jabes-Gileade para dizer-lhes:

— Benditos do Senhor sejam vocês, por este ato de bondade para com o seu senhor, para com Saul, pois vocês o sepultaram! 6 E agora que o Senhor use de misericórdia e fidelidade para com vocês. E eu também os tratarei bem por causa do que vocês fizeram. 7 E agora sejam fortes e valentes, porque Saul, o senhor de vocês, está morto, e os da casa de Judá me ungiram para ser o seu rei.

8 Abner, filho de Ner, capitão do exército de Saul, levou Isbosete, filho de Saul, para Maanaim, 9 e o constituiu rei sobre Gileade, sobre os assuritas, sobre Jezreel, Efraim, Benjamim e sobre todo o Israel. 10 Isbosete, filho de Saul, tinha quarenta anos de idade quando começou a reinar sobre Israel, e reinou dois anos. Somente a casa de Judá seguia Davi. 11 O tempo que Davi reinou em Hebrom sobre a casa de Judá foram sete anos e seis meses.

12 Abner, filho de Ner, e os homens de Isbosete, filho de Saul, saíram de Maanaim e foram para Gibeão. 13 Joabe, filho de Zeruia, e os servos de Davi também saíram, e os dois grupos se encontraram perto da cisterna de Gibeão. Um grupo parou do lado de cá da cisterna, e o outro, do lado de lá. 14 Então Abner disse a Joabe:

— Que os moços se levantem e lutem diante de nós.

Joabe respondeu:

— Está bem!

15 Então se levantaram e avançaram em igual número: doze de Benjamim, da parte de Isbosete, filho de Saul, e doze dos homens de Davi. 16 Cada um pegou o seu adversário pela cabeça, meteu-lhe a espada no lado, e caíram mortos juntos. Por isso aquele lugar foi chamado de Campo das Espadas. Fica perto de Gibeão. 17 Houve um combate intenso naquele dia, e Abner e os homens de Israel foram derrotados pelos homens de Davi.

18 Estavam ali os três filhos de Zeruia: Joabe, Abisai e Asael. Asael, que era ligeiro como uma gazela selvagem, 19 perseguiu Abner e, na sua perseguição, não se desviou nem para a direita nem para a esquerda. 20 Então Abner olhou para trás e perguntou:

— É você, Asael?

Ele respondeu:

— Sou eu mesmo.

21 Então Abner disse:

— Desvie-se para a direita ou para a esquerda, agarre um dos soldados e pegue a armadura dele.

Porém Asael não desistiu de perseguir Abner. 22 Então Abner disse mais uma vez:

— Pare de me perseguir! Do contrário, vou ter de matá-lo. E, depois, como poderia eu olhar no rosto de seu irmão Joabe?

23 Como Asael não quis deixar de persegui-lo, Abner o feriu na barriga com a extremidade inferior da lança, que lhe saiu pelas costas. Asael caiu e morreu ali mesmo. Todos os que chegavam ao lugar em que Asael tinha caído morto paravam.

24 Porém Joabe e Abisai perseguiram Abner. O sol se pôs quando eles chegaram à colina de Amá, que está em frente de Giá, no caminho do deserto de Gibeão. 25 Os filhos de Benjamim se reuniram em volta de Abner, formando uma só tropa, e se puseram no alto de uma colina. 26 Então Abner gritou para Joabe:

— Será que a espada vai consumir para sempre? Você não sabe que serão amargas as suas consequências? Até quando você vai esperar para ordenar ao povo que deixe de perseguir os seus irmãos?

27 Joabe respondeu:

— Tão certo como vive Deus, se você não tivesse falado, só amanhã cedo o povo cessaria de perseguir cada um o seu irmão.

28 Então Joabe tocou a trombeta, e todo o povo parou, e eles não perseguiram mais Israel e a luta acabou. 29 Abner e seus homens marcharam toda aquela noite pela planície. Passaram o Jordão e, caminhando toda a manhã, chegaram a Maanaim. 30 Joabe deixou de perseguir Abner. E, tendo reunido todo o povo, verificou que faltavam dezenove dos homens de Davi, além de Asael. 31 Porém os servos de Davi tinham matado, dentre os de Benjamim e dentre os soldados de Abner, trezentos e sessenta homens. 32 Levaram Asael e o sepultaram no túmulo de seu pai, em Belém. Joabe e seus homens caminharam toda aquela noite, e, ao amanhecer, chegaram a Hebrom.

1 And it came to pass after this, that David inquired of Jehovah, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And Jehovah said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. 2 So David went up thither, and his two wives also, Ahinoam the Jezreelitess, and Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite. 3 And his men that were with him did David bring up, every man with his household: and they dwelt in the cities of Hebron. 4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.

And they told David, saying, The men of Jabesh-gilead were they that buried Saul. 5 And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of Jehovah, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him. 6 And now Jehovah show lovingkindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing. 7 Now therefore let your hands be strong, and be ye valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah have anointed me king over them.

8 Now Abner the son of Ner, captain of Saul’s host, had taken Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and brought him over to Mahanaim; 9 and he made him king over Gilead, and over the Ashurites, and over Jezreel, and over Ephraim, and over Benjamin, and over all Israel. 10 Ish-bosheth, Saul’s son, was forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. But the house of Judah followed David. 11 And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.

12 And Abner the son of Ner, and the servants of Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, went out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. 13 And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met them by the pool of Gibeon; and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool. 14 And Abner said to Joab, Let the young men, I pray thee, arise and play before us. And Joab said, Let them arise. 15 Then they arose and went over by number: twelve for Benjamin, and for Ish-bosheth the son of Saul, and twelve of the servants of David. 16 And they caught every one his fellow by the head, and thrust his sword in his fellow’s side; so they fell down together: wherefore that place was called Helkath-hazzurim, which is in Gibeon. 17 And the battle was very sore that day; and Abner was beaten, and the men of Israel, before the servants of David.

18 And the three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, and Abishai, and Asahel: and Asahel was as light of foot as a wild roe. 19 And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner. 20 Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Is it thou, Asahel? And he answered, It is I. 21 And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armor. But Asahel would not turn aside from following him. 22 And Abner said again to Asahel, Turn thee aside from following me: wherefore should I smite thee to the ground? how then should I hold up my face to Joab thy brother? 23 Howbeit he refused to turn aside: wherefore Abner with the hinder end of the spear smote him in the body, so that the spear came out behind him; and he fell down there, and died in the same place: and it came to pass, that as many as came to the place where Asahel fell down and died stood still.

24 But Joab and Abishai pursued after Abner: and the sun went down when they were come to the hill of Ammah, that lieth before Giah by the way of the wilderness of Gibeon. 25 And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one band, and stood on the top of a hill. 26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren? 27 And Joab said, As God liveth, if thou hadst not spoken, surely then in the morning the people had gone away, nor followed every one his brother. 28 So Joab blew the trumpet; and all the people stood still, and pursued after Israel no more, neither fought they any more. 29 And Abner and his men went all that night through the Arabah; and they passed over the Jordan, and went through all Bithron, and came to Mahanaim.

30 And Joab returned from following Abner: and when he had gathered all the people together, there lacked of David’s servants nineteen men and Asahel. 31 But the servants of David had smitten of Benjamin, and of Abner’s men, so that three hundred and threescore men died. 32 And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and the day brake upon them at Hebron.
