1 Depois destas coisas, vi descer do céu outro anjo, que tinha grande autoridade, e a terra se iluminou com a sua glória. 2 Então exclamou com potente voz, dizendo:

— Caiu! Caiu a grande Babilônia! Ela se tornou morada de demônios, refúgio de toda espécie de espírito imundo e esconderijo de todo tipo de ave imunda e detestável, 3 pois todas as nações beberam do vinho do furor da sua prostituição. Com ela se prostituíram os reis da terra. Também os mercadores da terra se enriqueceram à custa da sua luxúria.

4 Ouvi outra voz do céu, dizendo:

"Saiam dela, povo meu,

para que vocês não sejam

cúmplices em seus pecados

e para que os seus flagelos

não caiam sobre vocês.

5 Porque os pecados dela

se acumularam até o céu,

e Deus se lembrou das injustiças

que ela praticou.

6 Retribuam-lhe

como também ela retribuiu,

paguem-lhe em dobro

segundo as suas obras

e, no cálice em que

ela misturou bebidas,

misturem dobrado para ela.

7 O quanto a si mesma

glorificou e viveu em luxúria,

deem a ela em igual medida

tormento e pranto.

Porque ela pensa assim:

‘Estou sentada como rainha.

Não sou viúva.

Nunca saberei o que é pranto!’

8 Por isso, em um só dia

sobrevirão os seus flagelos:

morte, pranto e fome;

e será queimada no fogo,

porque poderoso é o Senhor Deus,

que a julga."

9 Os reis da terra, que com ela se prostituíram e viveram em luxúria, vão chorar e se lamentar por causa dela, quando virem a fumaça do seu incêndio. 10 E, conservando-se de longe, com medo do seu tormento, dizem:

"Ai! Ai de você, grande cidade,

Babilônia, cidade poderosa!

Pois em uma só hora

chegou o seu juízo."

11 E, por causa dela, choram e pranteiam os mercadores da terra, porque ninguém mais compra a sua mercadoria, 12 mercadoria de ouro, de prata, de pedras preciosas, de pérolas, de linho finíssimo, de púrpura, de seda, de escarlate; e toda espécie de madeira odorífera, todo gênero de objeto de marfim, toda qualidade de móvel de madeira cara, de bronze, de ferro e de mármore; 13 e canela de cheiro, especiarias, incenso, perfume, mirra, vinho, azeite, boa farinha, trigo, gado e ovelhas; e de cavalos, de carruagens, de escravos e até almas humanas. 14 Eles dizem:

"O fruto que tanto lhe apeteceu

se afastou de você,

e para você se extinguiu

tudo o que é delicado

e esplêndido,

e nunca mais serão achados."

15 Os mercadores destas coisas, que, por meio dela, se enriqueceram, ficarão de longe, com medo do seu tormento, chorando e pranteando, 16 dizendo:

"Ai! Ai da grande cidade,

que estava vestida

de linho finíssimo,

de púrpura e de escarlate,

enfeitada com ouro,

pedras preciosas e pérolas,

17 porque em uma só hora

ficou devastada

tamanha riqueza!"

E todos os pilotos, e todos aqueles que viajam pelo mar, e marinheiros, e os que ganham a vida no mar ficaram de longe. 18 Então, vendo a fumaça do seu incêndio, gritavam:

— Que cidade se compara à grande cidade?

19 Lançaram pó sobre a cabeça e, chorando e pranteando, gritavam:

"Ai! Ai da grande cidade,

na qual se enriqueceram todos

os que possuíam navios no mar,

à custa da sua riqueza,

porque em uma só hora

foi devastada!

20 Alegrem-se por causa dela,

ó céus,

e também vocês, santos,

apóstolos e profetas,

porque Deus julgou

a causa de vocês contra ela."

21 Então um anjo forte levantou uma pedra do tamanho de uma grande pedra de moinho e lançou-a no mar, dizendo:

"Assim, com ímpeto,

será lançada Babilônia,

a grande cidade,

e nunca mais será achada.

22 Em você nunca mais será ouvido

o som de harpistas,

de músicos, de tocadores de flauta

e de trombeta.

Em você nunca mais se achará

artífice nenhum

de qualquer arte que seja,

e nunca jamais se ouvirá em você

o ruído de pedra de moinho.

23 Também nunca mais brilhará

em você a luz

de uma lamparina,

e nunca mais se ouvirá em você

uma voz de noivo ou de noiva,

pois os seus mercadores

foram os grandes da terra,

porque com a sua feitiçaria

você seduziu todas as nações.

24 E nela foi encontrado

sangue de profetas,

de santos e de todos os que

foram mortos sobre a terra."

1 After these things I saw another angel coming down out of heaven, having great authority; and the earth was lightened with his glory. 2 And he cried with a mighty voice, saying, Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, and is become a habitation of demons, and a hold of every unclean spirit, and a hold of every unclean and hateful bird. 3 For by the wine of the wrath of her fornication all the nations are fallen; and the kings of the earth committed fornication with her, and the merchants of the earth waxed rich by the power of her wantonness.

4 And I heard another voice from heaven, saying, Come forth, my people, out of her, that ye have no fellowship with her sins, and that ye receive not of her plagues: 5 for her sins have reached even unto heaven, and God hath remembered her iniquities. 6 Render unto her even as she rendered, and double unto her the double according to her works: in the cup which she mingled, mingle unto her double. 7 How much soever she glorified herself, and waxed wanton, so much give her of torment and mourning: for she saith in her heart, I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall in no wise see mourning. 8 Therefore in one day shall her plagues come, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire; for strong is the Lord God who judged her. 9 And the kings of the earth, who committed fornication and lived wantonly with her, shall weep and wail over her, when they look upon the smoke of her burning, 10 standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, Babylon, the strong city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. 11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, for no man buyeth their merchandise any more; 12 merchandise of gold, and silver, and precious stone, and pearls, and fine linen, and purple, and silk, and scarlet; and all thyine wood, and every vessel of ivory, and every vessel made of most precious wood, and of brass, and iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon, and spice, and incense, and ointment, and frankincense, and wine, and oil, and fine flour, and wheat, and cattle, and sheep; and merchandise of horses and chariots and slaves; and souls of men. 14 And the fruits which thy soul lusted after are gone from thee, and all things that were dainty and sumptuous are perished from thee, and men shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who were made rich by her, shall stand afar off for the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning; 16 saying, Woe, woe, the great city, she that was arrayed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and decked with gold and precious stone and pearl! 17 for in one hour so great riches is made desolate. And every shipmaster, and every one that saileth any whither, and mariners, and as many as gain their living by sea, stood afar off, 18 and cried out as they looked upon the smoke of her burning, saying, What city is like the great city? 19 And they cast dust on their heads, and cried, weeping and mourning, saying, Woe, woe, the great city, wherein all that had their ships in the sea were made rich by reason of her costliness! for in one hour is she made desolate. 20 Rejoice over her, thou heaven, and ye saints, and ye apostles, and ye prophets; for God hath judged your judgment on her.

21 And a strong angel took up a stone as it were a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with a mighty fall shall Babylon, the great city, be cast down, and shall be found no more at all. 22 And the voice of harpers and minstrels and flute-players and trumpeters shall be heard no more at all in thee; and no craftsman, of whatsoever craft, shall be found any more at all in thee; and the voice of a mill shall be heard no more at all in thee; 23 and the light of a lamp shall shine no more at all in thee; and the voice of the bridegroom and of the bride shall be heard no more at all in thee: for thy merchants were the princes of the earth; for with thy sorcery were all the nations deceived. 24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints, and of all that have been slain upon the earth.
