1 O rei Nabucodonosor às pessoas de todos os povos, nações e línguas, que habitam em toda a terra:

"Que a paz lhes seja multiplicada! 2 Pareceu-me bem tornar conhecidos os sinais e as maravilhas que Deus, o Altíssimo, tem feito para comigo."

3 "Como são grandes os seus sinais,

e como são poderosas

as suas maravilhas!

O seu reino é um reino eterno,

e o seu domínio se estende

de geração em geração."

4 — Eu, Nabucodonosor, estava tranquilo em minha casa e feliz no meu palácio. 5 Tive um sonho que me espantou. Quando eu estava na minha cama, os pensamentos e as visões que passaram diante dos meus olhos me perturbaram. 6 Por isso, expedi um decreto, ordenando que fossem trazidos à minha presença todos os sábios da Babilônia, para que me revelassem a interpretação do sonho. 7 Então vieram os magos, os encantadores, os caldeus e os feiticeiros. Eu lhes contei o sonho, mas eles não puderam me revelar a sua interpretação. 8 Por fim, apresentou-se Daniel, que é chamado de Beltessazar, em honra ao nome do meu deus. Ele tem o espírito dos santos deuses, e eu lhe contei o sonho, dizendo: 9 "Beltessazar, chefe dos magos, eu sei que você tem o espírito dos santos deuses e que não há mistério que você não possa explicar. Vou lhe contar o sonho que eu tive, para que você me diga o que ele significa. 10 Estas foram as visões que passaram diante dos meus olhos quando eu estava deitado na minha cama: eu estava olhando e vi uma árvore no meio da terra, cuja altura era enorme. 11 A árvore cresceu e se tornou forte, de maneira que a sua altura chegou até o céu; ela podia ser vista desde os confins da terra. 12 A sua folhagem era bela, o seu fruto era abundante, e nela havia sustento para todos. Debaixo dela os animais selvagens achavam sombra, e as aves do céu faziam morada nos seus ramos; e todos os seres vivos se alimentavam dela. 13 No meu sonho, quando eu estava na minha cama, vi um vigilante, um santo, que descia do céu, 14 gritando em alta voz: ‘Derrubem a árvore, cortem os seus ramos, arranquem as folhas e espalhem os seus frutos. Espantem os animais que estão debaixo dela e as aves que fazem morada nos seus ramos. 15 Mas o toco, com as raízes, deixem na terra, amarrado com correntes de ferro e de bronze, em meio à erva do campo. Que esse toco seja molhado pelo orvalho do céu, e que a parte que lhe cabe seja a erva da terra, junto com os animais. 16 Que o coração dele seja mudado, para que não seja mais coração humano, e lhe seja dado coração de animal; e passem sobre ele sete tempos. 17 Esta sentença é por decreto dos vigilantes, e esta ordem é por mandado dos santos, para que os que vivem saibam que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre o reino dos homens. Ele dá esse reino a quem quer, e põe sobre ele até o mais humilde dos homens.’"

18 — Este foi o sonho que eu, rei Nabucodonosor, tive. Você, Beltessazar, diga a interpretação, porque todos os sábios do meu reino não puderam me revelar a interpretação. Mas eu sei que você pode, porque você tem o espírito dos santos deuses.

19 Então Daniel, cujo nome era Beltessazar, ficou perplexo por algum tempo, e os seus pensamentos o perturbavam. Então o rei lhe disse:

— Beltessazar, não deixe que o sonho ou a sua interpretação o perturbem.

Beltessazar respondeu:

— Meu senhor, quem dera o sonho fosse a respeito daqueles que o odeiam, e a sua interpretação se aplicasse aos seus inimigos! 20 A árvore que o senhor viu, que cresceu e se tornou forte, cuja altura chegou até o céu, que foi vista por toda a terra, 21 cuja folhagem era bela, cujo fruto era abundante, na qual havia sustento para todos, debaixo da qual os animais selvagens achavam sombra, e em cujos ramos as aves do céu faziam morada, 22 aquela árvore é o senhor, ó rei, que cresceu e veio a ser forte. A sua grandeza, ó rei, cresceu e chega até o céu, e o seu domínio se estende até a extremidade da terra. 23 Quanto ao vigilante ou santo que o rei viu, que descia do céu e que dizia: "Cortem e destruam a árvore, mas deixem o toco com as raízes na terra, amarrado com correntes de ferro e de bronze, em meio à erva do campo; que esse toco seja molhado pelo orvalho do céu, e que a parte que lhe cabe seja com os animais selvagens, até que passem sobre ele sete tempos", 24 esta é a interpretação, ó rei, e este é o decreto do Altíssimo, que virá contra meu senhor, o rei: 25 o senhor será expulso do meio das pessoas, e a sua morada será com os animais selvagens; o senhor comerá capim como os bois, e será molhado pelo orvalho do céu; e passarão sete tempos, até que o senhor, ó rei, reconheça que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre os reinos do mundo e os dá a quem ele quer. 26 Quanto ao que foi dito, que se deixasse o toco da árvore com as suas raízes, isto significa que o seu reino voltará a ser seu, depois que o senhor tiver reconhecido que o Céu domina. 27 Portanto, ó rei, aceite o meu conselho: abandone os seus pecados, praticando a justiça, e acabe com as suas iniquidades, usando de misericórdia para com os pobres; assim talvez a sua tranquilidade se prolongue.

28 Tudo isso, de fato, aconteceu com o rei Nabucodonosor. 29 Passados doze meses, quando estava passeando no terraço do palácio real da cidade da Babilônia, 30 o rei disse:

— Não é esta a grande Babilônia que eu construí para a casa real, com o meu grandioso poder e para glória da minha majestade?

31 Enquanto o rei ainda falava, veio uma voz do céu, que disse:

— A você, rei Nabucodonosor, se anuncia o seguinte: Este reino lhe foi tirado. 32 Você será expulso do meio das pessoas, e a sua morada será com os animais selvagens; você comerá capim como os bois, e passarão sete tempos, até que você reconheça que o Altíssimo tem domínio sobre os reinos do mundo e os dá a quem ele quer.

33 No mesmo instante, se cumpriu a palavra sobre Nabucodonosor. Ele foi expulso do meio das pessoas e começou a comer capim como os bois. O seu corpo foi molhado pelo orvalho do céu, até que lhe cresceram os cabelos como as penas da águia, e as suas unhas, como as garras das aves.

34 — Mas ao fim daqueles dias, eu, Nabucodonosor, levantei os olhos ao céu, e recuperei o entendimento. Então eu bendisse o Altíssimo, e louvei e glorifiquei aquele que vive para sempre:

"O seu domínio é eterno,

e o seu reino se estende

de geração em geração.

35 Todos os moradores da terra

são considerados como nada,

e o Altíssimo faz o que quer

com o exército do céu

e com os moradores da terra.

Não há quem possa deter

a sua mão,

nem questionar o que ele faz."

36 — Nesse tempo, recuperei o entendimento e, para a dignidade do meu reino, recuperei também a minha majestade e o meu resplendor. Os meus conselheiros e os homens importantes vieram me procurar, fui restabelecido no meu reino, e a minha grandeza se tornou ainda maior. 37 Agora eu, Nabucodonosor, louvo, engrandeço e glorifico o Rei do céu, porque todas as suas obras são verdadeiras, e os seus caminhos são justos. Ele tem poder para humilhar os orgulhosos.

1 Nebuchadnezzar the king, unto all the peoples, nations, and languages, that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied unto you. 2 It hath seemed good unto me to show the signs and wonders that the Most High God hath wrought toward me. 3 How great are his signs! and how mighty are his wonders! his kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and his dominion is from generation to generation.

4 I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at rest in my house, and flourishing in my palace. 5 I saw a dream which made me afraid; and the thoughts upon my bed and the visions of my head troubled me. 6 Therefore made I a decree to bring in all the wise men of Babylon before me, that they might make known unto me the interpretation of the dream. 7 Then came in the magicians, the enchanters, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers; and I told the dream before them; but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof. 8 But at the last Daniel came in before me, whose name was Belteshazzar, according to the name of my god, and in whom is the spirit of the holy gods: and I told the dream before him, saying, 9 O Belteshazzar, master of the magicians, because I know that the spirit of the holy gods is in thee, and no secret troubleth thee, tell me the visions of my dream that I have seen, and the interpretation thereof. 10 Thus were the visions of my head upon my bed: I saw, and, behold, a tree in the midst of the earth; and the height thereof was great. 11 The tree grew, and was strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to the end of all the earth. 12 The leaves thereof were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all: the beasts of the field had shadow under it, and the birds of the heavens dwelt in the branches thereof, and all flesh was fed from it. 13 I saw in the visions of my head upon my bed, and, behold, a watcher and a holy one came down from heaven. 14 He cried aloud, and said thus, Hew down the tree, and cut off its branches, shake off its leaves, and scatter its fruit: let the beasts get away from under it, and the fowls from its branches. 15 Nevertheless leave the stump of its roots in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field; and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts in the grass of the earth: 16 let his heart be changed from man’s, and let a beast’s heart be given unto him; and let seven times pass over him. 17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones; to the intent that the living may know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the lowest of men. 18 This dream I, king Nebuchadnezzar, have seen; and thou, O Belteshazzar, declare the interpretation, forasmuch as all the wise men of my kingdom are not able to make known unto me the interpretation; but thou art able; for the spirit of the holy gods is in thee.

19 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was stricken dumb for a while, and his thoughts troubled him. The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, let not the dream, or the interpretation, trouble thee. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream be to them that hate thee, and the interpretation thereof to thine adversaries. 20 The tree that thou sawest, which grew, and was strong, whose height reached unto heaven, and the sight thereof to all the earth; 21 whose leaves were fair, and the fruit thereof much, and in it was food for all; under which the beasts of the field dwelt, and upon whose branches the birds of the heavens had their habitation: 22 it is thou, O king, that art grown and become strong; for thy greatness is grown, and reacheth unto heaven, and thy dominion to the end of the earth. 23 And whereas the king saw a watcher and a holy one coming down from heaven, and saying, Hew down the tree, and destroy it; nevertheless leave the stump of the roots thereof in the earth, even with a band of iron and brass, in the tender grass of the field, and let it be wet with the dew of heaven: and let his portion be with the beasts of the field, till seven times pass over him; 24 this is the interpretation, O king, and it is the decree of the Most High, which is come upon my lord the king: 25 that thou shalt be driven from men, and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field, and thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen, and shalt be wet with the dew of heaven, and seven times shall pass over thee; till thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 26 And whereas they commanded to leave the stump of the roots of the tree; thy kingdom shall be sure unto thee, after that thou shalt have known that the heavens do rule. 27 Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by showing mercy to the poor; if there may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity.

28 All this came upon the king Nebuchadnezzar. 29 At the end of twelve months he was walking in the royal palace of Babylon. 30 The king spake and said, Is not this great Babylon, which I have built for the royal dwelling-place, by the might of my power and for the glory of my majesty? 31 While the word was in the king’s mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, saying, O king Nebuchadnezzar, to thee it is spoken: The kingdom is departed from thee: 32 and thou shalt be driven from men; and thy dwelling shall be with the beasts of the field; thou shalt be made to eat grass as oxen; and seven times shall pass over thee; until thou know that the Most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will. 33 The same hour was the thing fulfilled upon Nebuchadnezzar: and he was driven from men, and did eat grass as oxen, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, till his hair was grown like eagles’ feathers, and his nails like birds’ claws.

34 And at the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me, and I blessed the Most High, and I praised and honored him that liveth for ever; for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom from generation to generation; 35 and all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing; and he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou? 36 At the same time mine understanding returned unto me; and for the glory of my kingdom, my majesty and brightness returned unto me; and my counsellors and my lords sought unto me; and I was established in my kingdom, and excellent greatness was added unto me. 37 Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and extol and honor the King of heaven; for all his works are truth, and his ways justice; and those that walk in pride he is able to abase.
