1 Tudo tem o seu tempo

determinado,

e há tempo para todo propósito

debaixo do céu:

2 há tempo de nascer

e tempo de morrer;

tempo de plantar

e tempo de arrancar

o que se plantou;

3 tempo de matar

e tempo de curar;

tempo de derrubar

e tempo de construir;

4 tempo de chorar

e tempo de rir;

tempo de prantear

e tempo de saltar de alegria;

5 tempo de espalhar pedras

e tempo de ajuntar pedras;

tempo de abraçar

e tempo de deixar de abraçar;

6 tempo de procurar

e tempo de perder;

tempo de guardar

e tempo de jogar fora;

7 tempo de rasgar

e tempo de costurar;

tempo de ficar calado

e tempo de falar;

8 tempo de amar

e tempo de odiar;

tempo de guerra

e tempo de paz.

9 Que proveito tem o trabalhador naquilo com que se afadiga? 10 Vi o trabalho que Deus impôs aos filhos dos homens, para com ele os afligir. 11 Deus fez tudo formoso no seu devido tempo. Também pôs a eternidade no coração do ser humano, sem que este possa descobrir as obras que Deus fez desde o princípio até o fim. 12 Sei que não há nada melhor para o ser humano do que alegrar-se e aproveitar a vida ao máximo. 13 Sei também que poder comer, beber e desfrutar o que se conseguiu com todo o trabalho é dom de Deus. 14 Sei que tudo o que Deus faz durará eternamente, sem que nada possa ser acrescentado nem tirado, e que Deus faz isto para que as pessoas o temam. 15 O que é já foi, e o que será também já foi; Deus fará vir outra vez o que já passou.

16 Vi ainda debaixo do sol que no lugar do juízo reinava a maldade e no lugar da justiça havia mais maldade. 17 Então eu disse a mim mesmo: "Deus julgará o justo e o ímpio; porque há um tempo para todo propósito e para toda obra." 18 Eu disse mais: "Isto é por causa dos filhos dos homens, para que Deus os prove, e eles vejam que são em si mesmos como os animais." 19 Porque o mesmo que acontece com os filhos dos homens acontece com os animais: como morre um, assim morre o outro. Todos têm o mesmo fôlego de vida, e o ser humano não tem nenhuma vantagem sobre os animais. Porque tudo é vaidade. 20 Todos vão para o mesmo lugar; todos procedem do pó e ao pó voltarão. 21 Quem sabe se o fôlego de vida dos filhos dos homens se dirige para cima e o dos animais para baixo, para a terra? 22 Assim, percebi que não há nada melhor para o ser humano do que desfrutar do seu trabalho, porque essa é a sua recompensa. Pois quem o fará voltar para ver o que será depois dele?

1 For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven: 2 a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; 3 a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; 4 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; 5 a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; 6 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; 7 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 8 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. 9 What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboreth? 10 I have seen the travail which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised therewith. 11 He hath made everything beautiful in its time: also he hath set eternity in their heart, yet so that man cannot find out the work that God hath done from the beginning even to the end. 12 I know that there is nothing better for them, than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live. 13 And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God. 14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: nothing can be put to it, nor anything taken from it; and God hath done it, that men should fear before him. 15 That which is hath been long ago; and that which is to be hath long ago been: and God seeketh again that which is passed away. 16 And moreover I saw under the sun, in the place of justice, that wickedness was there; and in the place of righteousness, that wickedness was there. 17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked; for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work. 18 I said in my heart, It is because of the sons of men, that God may prove them, and that they may see that they themselves are but as beasts. 19 For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity. 20 All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again. 21 Who knoweth the spirit of man, whether it goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast, whether it goeth downward to the earth? 22 Wherefore I saw that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him back to see what shall be after him?
