1 Havia entre os fariseus um homem chamado Nicodemos, um dos principais dos judeus. 2 Este, de noite, foi até Jesus e lhe disse:

— Rabi, sabemos que o senhor é Mestre vindo da parte de Deus, porque ninguém pode fazer estes sinais que o senhor faz, se Deus não estiver com ele.

3 Jesus respondeu:

— Em verdade, em verdade lhe digo que, se alguém não nascer de novo, não pode ver o Reino de Deus.

4 Nicodemos perguntou:

— Como pode um homem nascer, sendo velho? Será que pode voltar ao ventre materno e nascer uma segunda vez?

5 Jesus respondeu:

— Em verdade, em verdade lhe digo: quem não nascer da água e do Espírito não pode entrar no Reino de Deus. 6 O que é nascido da carne é carne, e o que é nascido do Espírito é espírito. 7 Não fique admirado por eu dizer: "Vocês precisam nascer de novo." 8 O vento sopra onde quer, você ouve o barulho que ele faz, mas não sabe de onde ele vem, nem para onde vai; assim é todo o que é nascido do Espírito.

9 Então Nicodemos perguntou:

— Como pode ser isso?

Jesus respondeu:

10 — Você é mestre em Israel e não compreende estas coisas? 11 Em verdade, em verdade lhe digo que nós falamos do que sabemos e damos testemunho do que vimos, mas vocês não aceitam o nosso testemunho. 12 Se vocês não creem quando falo sobre coisas terrenas, como crerão se eu lhes falar sobre as celestiais? 13 Ora, ninguém subiu ao céu, a não ser aquele que de lá desceu, o Filho do Homem.

14 — E assim como Moisés levantou a serpente no deserto, assim também é necessário que o Filho do Homem seja levantado, 15 para que todo o que nele crê tenha a vida eterna.

16 Porque Deus amou o mundo de tal maneira que deu o seu Filho unigênito, para que todo o que nele crê não pereça, mas tenha a vida eterna. 17 Porque Deus enviou o seu Filho ao mundo, não para que condenasse o mundo, mas para que o mundo fosse salvo por ele. 18 Quem nele crê não é condenado; mas o que não crê já está condenado, porque não crê no nome do unigênito Filho de Deus. 19 A condenação é esta: a luz veio ao mundo, mas os homens amaram mais as trevas do que a luz, porque as suas obras eram más. 20 Pois todo aquele que pratica o mal detesta a luz e não se aproxima da luz, para que as suas obras não sejam reprovadas. 21 Quem pratica a verdade se aproxima da luz, para que as suas obras sejam manifestas, porque são feitas em Deus.

22 Depois disso, Jesus foi com os seus discípulos para a terra da Judeia; ali permaneceu com eles e batizava. 23 Ora, João também estava batizando em Enom, perto de Salim, porque ali havia muitas águas, e o povo se dirigia para lá e era batizado. 24 Pois João ainda não havia sido preso.

25 Então surgiu uma discussão entre os discípulos de João e um judeu a respeito da purificação. 26 E foram até João e lhe disseram:

— Mestre, aquele que estava com o senhor no outro lado do Jordão, do qual o senhor deu testemunho, está batizando, e todos vão até ele.

27 João respondeu:

— Ninguém pode receber coisa alguma se não lhe for dada do céu. 28 Vocês mesmos são testemunhas de que eu disse: "Eu não sou o Cristo, mas fui enviado como o seu precursor." 29 O que tem a noiva é o noivo; o amigo do noivo que está presente e o escuta se alegra muito por causa da voz do noivo. Pois essa alegria já se cumpriu em mim. 30 Convém que ele cresça e que eu diminua.

31 Quem vem das alturas certamente está acima de todos; quem vem da terra é terreno e fala da terra. Quem veio do céu está acima de todos 32 e dá testemunho daquilo que viu e ouviu, mas ninguém aceita o seu testemunho. 33 Quem, porém, aceita o testemunho que ele dá certifica que Deus é verdadeiro. 34 Pois aquele que Deus enviou fala as palavras de Deus, porque Deus não dá o Espírito por medida. 35 O Pai ama o Filho e entregou todas as coisas nas mãos dele. 36 Por isso, quem crê no Filho tem a vida eterna; quem se mantém rebelde contra o Filho não verá a vida, mas sobre ele permanece a ira de Deus.

1 Now there was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 2 the same came unto him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that thou doest, except God be with him. 3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born anew, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? 5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except one be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born anew. 8 The wind bloweth where it will, and thou hearest the voice thereof, but knowest not whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. 9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou the teacher of Israel, and understandest not these things? 11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that which we know, and bear witness of that which we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 12 If I told you earthly things and ye believe not, how shall ye believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 And no one hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended out of heaven, even the Son of man, who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; 15 that whosoever believeth may in him have eternal life.

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God sent not the Son into the world to judge the world; but that the world should be saved through him. 18 He that believeth on him is not judged: he that believeth not hath been judged already, because he hath not believed on the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the judgment, that the light is come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, and cometh not to the light, lest his works should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth the truth cometh to the light, that his works may be made manifest, that they have been wrought in God.

22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judæa; and there he tarried with them, and baptized. 23 And John also was baptizing in Ænon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized. 24 For John was not yet cast into prison. 25 There arose therefore a questioning on the part of John’s disciples with a Jew about purifying. 26 And they came unto John, and said to him, Rabbi, he that was with thee beyond the Jordan, to whom thou hast borne witness, behold, the same baptizeth, and all men come to him. 27 John answered and said, A man can receive nothing, except it have been given him from heaven. 28 Ye yourselves bear me witness, that I said, I am not the Christ, but, that I am sent before him. 29 He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, that standeth and heareth him, rejoiceth greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice: this my joy therefore is made full. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.

31 He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is of the earth, and of the earth he speaketh: he that cometh from heaven is above all. 32 What he hath seen and heard, of that he beareth witness; and no man receiveth his witness. 33 He that hath received his witness hath set his seal to this, that God is true. 34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for he giveth not the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. 36 He that believeth on the Son hath eternal life; but he that obeyeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.
