1 Quando chegou o sétimo mês e os filhos de Israel já estavam morando nas suas cidades, todo o povo se reuniu, como um só homem, na praça, diante do Portão das Águas. E pediram a Esdras, o escriba, que trouxesse o Livro da Lei de Moisés, que o Senhor havia ordenado a Israel. 2 Esdras, o sacerdote, trouxe a Lei diante da congregação, composta por homens, mulheres e todos os que eram capazes de entender o que ouviam. Era o primeiro dia do sétimo mês. 3 Esdras leu o livro em voz alta, diante da praça que fica em frente ao Portão das Águas, desde o amanhecer até o meio-dia, na presença dos homens, das mulheres e dos que podiam entender. E todo o povo tinha os ouvidos atentos ao Livro da Lei.

4 Esdras, o escriba, estava num púlpito de madeira, que fizeram para aquele fim. Estavam em pé, ao lado dele, à sua direita, Matitias, Sema, Anaías, Urias, Hilquias e Maaseias; e à sua esquerda estavam Pedaías, Misael, Malquias, Hasum, Hasbadana, Zacarias e Mesulão. 5 Esdras abriu o livro à vista de todo o povo, porque se encontrava num lugar mais elevado do que todo o povo. Quando abriu o livro, todo o povo se pôs em pé. 6 Esdras louvou o Senhor, o grande Deus, e todo o povo, levantando as mãos, respondeu:

— Amém! Amém!

Inclinaram-se e adoraram o Senhor, com o rosto em terra.

7 E Jesua, Bani, Serebias, Jamim, Acube, Sabetai, Hodias, Maaseias, Quelita, Azarias, Jozabade, Hanã, Pelaías e os levitas ensinavam a Lei ao povo; e o povo permanecia no seu lugar. 8 Eles iam lendo o Livro da Lei de Deus, claramente, dando explicações, de maneira que o povo entendesse o que se lia.

9 Neemias, que era o governador, e Esdras, sacerdote e escriba, e os levitas que ensinavam o povo disseram a todos:

— Este dia é consagrado ao Senhor, nosso Deus, e por isso vocês não devem prantear nem chorar.

Porque todo o povo chorava, ouvindo as palavras da Lei. 10 Então lhes disse:

— Vão para casa, comam e bebam o que tiverem de melhor. E mandem porções aos que não têm nada preparado para si. Porque este dia é consagrado ao nosso Senhor. Portanto, não fiquem tristes, porque a alegria do Senhor é a força de vocês.

11 Os levitas tranquilizaram todo o povo, dizendo:

— Acalmem-se, porque este dia é santo. Não fiquem tristes.

12 Então todo o povo se foi para comer, beber, mandar porções aos que nada tinham e fazer uma grande festa, porque tinham entendido as palavras que lhes foram explicadas.

13 No dia seguinte, os chefes das famílias de todo o povo, os sacerdotes e os levitas se reuniram com Esdras, o sacerdote, para estudarem as palavras da Lei. 14 Acharam escrito na Lei que o Senhor havia ordenado por meio de Moisés que os filhos de Israel deveriam morar em cabanas, durante a festa do sétimo mês. 15 Assim, publicaram e anunciaram em todas as suas cidades e em Jerusalém, dizendo:

— Saiam para os montes e tragam ramos de oliveiras, ramos de zambujeiros, ramos de murtas, ramos de palmeiras e ramos de árvores frondosas, para fazer cabanas, como está escrito.

16 O povo saiu, e trouxeram os ramos e fizeram para si cabanas, cada um no seu terraço, e nos seus pátios, nos átrios da Casa de Deus, na praça do Portão das Águas e na praça do Portão de Efraim. 17 Toda a congregação dos que tinham voltado do cativeiro fez cabanas e morou nelas. Porque os filhos de Israel nunca haviam feito isto, desde os dias de Josué, filho de Num, até aquele dia. E todos estavam muito alegres. 18 O Livro da Lei de Deus foi lido diariamente, desde o primeiro até o último dia da festa. E celebraram a festa durante sete dias; no oitavo dia, houve uma reunião solene, conforme estava ordenado na Lei.

1 And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the broad place that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded to Israel. 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the assembly, both men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. 3 And he read therein before the broad place that was before the water gate from early morning until midday, in the presence of the men and the women, and of those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Uriah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchijah, and Hashum, and Hashbaddanah, Zechariah, and Meshullam. 5 And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people (for he was above all the people); and when he opened it, all the people stood up. 6 And Ezra blessed Jehovah, the great God; and all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with the lifting up of their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped Jehovah with their faces to the ground. 7 Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodiah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place. 8 And they read in the book, in the law of God, distinctly; and they gave the sense, so that they understood the reading.

9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto Jehovah your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. 10 Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto him for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye grieved; for the joy of Jehovah is your strength. 11 So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. 12 And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them.

13 And on the second day were gathered together the heads of fathers’ houses of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to give attention to the words of the law. 14 And they found written in the law, how that Jehovah had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month; 15 and that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and branches of wild olive, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. 16 So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the broad place of the water gate, and in the broad place of the gate of Ephraim. 17 And all the assembly of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and dwelt in the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. 18 Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the ordinance.
