1 Entrando em Jericó, Jesus atravessava a cidade. 2 Eis que um homem rico, chamado Zaqueu, chefe dos publicanos, 3 procurava ver quem era Jesus, mas não podia, por causa da multidão, por ser ele de pequena estatura. 4 Então, correndo adiante, subiu num sicômoro a fim de ver Jesus, porque ele havia de passar por ali. 5 Quando Jesus chegou àquele lugar, olhando para cima, disse:

— Zaqueu, desça depressa, porque hoje preciso ficar na sua casa.

6 Zaqueu desceu depressa e o recebeu com alegria. 7 Todos os que viram isto murmuravam, dizendo que Jesus tinha se hospedado com um homem pecador. 8 Zaqueu, por sua vez, se levantou e disse ao Senhor:

— Senhor, vou dar a metade dos meus bens aos pobres. E, se roubei alguma coisa de alguém, vou restituir quatro vezes mais.

9 Então Jesus lhe disse:

— Hoje houve salvação nesta casa, pois também este é filho de Abraão. 10 Porque o Filho do Homem veio buscar e salvar o perdido.

11 Ouvindo eles estas coisas, Jesus contou uma parábola, visto estar perto de Jerusalém e lhes parecer que o Reino de Deus havia de manifestar-se imediatamente. 12 Por isso, Jesus disse:

— Certo homem nobre partiu para uma terra distante, a fim de tomar posse de um reino e voltar. 13 Chamou dez dos seus servos, confiou-lhes dez minas e disse-lhes: "Negociem até que eu volte." 14 Mas os seus concidadãos o odiavam e enviaram após ele uma embaixada, dizendo: "Não queremos que este reine sobre nós."

15 — Quando ele voltou, depois de ter tomado posse do reino, mandou chamar os servos a quem tinha dado o dinheiro, a fim de saber quanto tinham conseguido ganhar em seus negócios.

16 — O primeiro se apresentou e disse: "Senhor, a sua mina rendeu dez." 17 O senhor lhe disse: "Muito bem, servo bom! E porque você foi fiel no pouco, terá autoridade sobre dez cidades."

18 — O segundo servo veio e disse: "Senhor, a sua mina rendeu cinco." 19 A este o senhor disse: "Você terá autoridade sobre cinco cidades."

20 — Então veio outro servo, dizendo: "Senhor, aqui está a sua mina, que eu guardei embrulhada num lenço. 21 Porque tive medo do senhor, que é homem rigoroso. O senhor retira o que não depositou e colhe o que não semeou." 22 Mas o senhor respondeu: "Servo mau, eu o julgarei usando as suas próprias palavras. Você sabia que eu sou homem rigoroso, que retiro o que não depositei e colho o que não semeei. 23 Por que você não pôs o meu dinheiro no banco? E, então, na minha vinda, eu o receberia com juros."

24 — E disse aos que estavam ali: "Tirem dele a mina e deem ao que tem as dez." 25 Eles ponderaram: "Senhor, ele já tem dez." 26 Ao que o senhor respondeu: "Pois eu declaro a vocês que a todo o que tem será dado ainda mais; mas ao que não tem, até o que tem lhe será tirado. 27 Mas quanto a esses meus inimigos, que não quiseram que eu reinasse sobre eles, tragam-nos aqui e os matem na minha presença."

28 E, depois de dizer isto, Jesus prosseguia a sua viagem para Jerusalém. 29 E aconteceu que, ao aproximar-se de Betfagé e de Betânia, junto ao monte das Oliveiras, Jesus enviou dois dos seus discípulos, 30 dizendo-lhes:

— Vão até a aldeia que fica ali adiante e, ao entrar, encontrarão preso um jumentinho, o qual ainda ninguém montou; desprendam o jumentinho e tragam aqui. 31 Se alguém perguntar: "Por que o estão desprendendo?", respondam assim: "Porque o Senhor precisa dele."

32 E, indo os que foram mandados, acharam tudo conforme Jesus lhes tinha dito. 33 Quando eles estavam soltando o jumentinho, os donos do animal disseram:

— Por que estão desprendendo o jumentinho?

34 Eles responderam:

— Porque o Senhor precisa dele.

35 Então trouxeram o jumentinho até Jesus e, pondo as suas capas sobre o animal, ajudaram Jesus a montar.

36 À medida que Jesus avançava, as pessoas estendiam as suas capas no caminho. 37 E, quando Jesus se aproximava da descida do monte das Oliveiras, toda a multidão dos discípulos começou, com muita alegria, a louvar a Deus em alta voz, por todos os milagres que tinham visto. 38 Diziam:

"Bendito é o Rei que vem

em nome do Senhor!

Paz no céu e glória

nas maiores alturas!"

39 Alguns dos fariseus lhe disseram em meio à multidão:

— Mestre, repreenda os seus discípulos!

40 Mas Jesus respondeu:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que, se eles se calarem, as próprias pedras clamarão.

41 Quando Jesus ia chegando a Jerusalém, vendo a cidade, chorou por ela, 42 dizendo:

— Ah! Se você soubesse, ainda hoje, o que é preciso para conseguir a paz! Mas isto está agora oculto aos seus olhos. 43 Pois virão dias em que os seus inimigos cercarão você de trincheiras e apertarão o cerco por todos os lados; 44 e vão arrasar você e matar todos os seus moradores. Não deixarão pedra sobre pedra, porque você não reconheceu o tempo em que Deus veio visitá-la.

45 Depois, entrando no templo, Jesus começou a expulsar os que ali vendiam, 46 dizendo-lhes:

— Está escrito: "A minha casa será ‘Casa de Oração’." Mas vocês fizeram dela um covil de salteadores.

47 Diariamente, Jesus ensinava no templo. Os principais sacerdotes, os escribas e os maiorais do povo procuravam tirar-lhe a vida, 48 mas não achavam uma forma de fazer isso, porque todo o povo, ao ouvi-lo, era cativado por ele.

1 HE entered and was passing through Jericho.2 In the city there was a man called Zacchaeus, who was chief of the tax collectors and was rich.3 He was trying to see Jesus \'97 what he was like; but he could not on account of the crowd, for he was short in stature.4 So running ahead he climbed up into a mulberry tree to see him, for he was going to pass that way.5 When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zaccheus, make haste and come down; to-day I must stay at your house."6 He hurriedly descended and welcomed him joyfully.7 All who saw it grumbled, saying that Jesus was going in to stay with a sinner.8 Zacchaeus stood and said to the Master, "See, the half of my property, Sir, I give to the poor, and if I have unjustly taken anything from any one, I will give him back four-fold."9 Jesus said to him, "To-day salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost."11 While they were listening to this, he added an illustration, because he was near to Jerusalem and they were thinking that the kingdom of heaven was going to appear immediately.12 He said, "A certain nobleman went into a far country to get for himself a kingdom and return.13 Calling his ten servants, he gave them each an equal sum of money and said to them, 'Do business until I come.'14 But his citizens hated him and sent an embassy after him to say, 'We do not want this man to be king over us.'15 When he returned, having secured the royal power, he ordered those servants to whom he had given the silver to be called to him that he might know what each had gained in trading.16 The first came saying, 'Sir, your money has gained tenfold.'17 He said, 'Well done, good servant, because you were faithful in the least you shall be ruler over ten cities.'18 Then came the second, saying, 'Your money, Sir, has made fivefold.'19 He said to this one, 'And you shall be over five cities.'20 Another one came, saying, 'Sir, here is your silver, which I kept laid away in a napkin.21 For I feared you, because you are an austere man; you take up what you did not lay down and you reap where you did not sow.'22 He said to him, 'Out of your own mouth I will judge you, you wicked servant. Did you know that I was an austere man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping where I did not sow?23 Then why did you not put my silver into the bank, so that when I came I could have exacted it with interest?'24 Then to those who stood by he said, 'Take from him the silver and give it to him who has tenfold.'25 They said to him, 'Sir, he has tenfold.'26 'I tell you,' he said, 'that to every one who has, shall be given, and from him who has not, even what he has shall be taken.27 But those enemies of mine, who did not want me to be king over them, bring here and slaughter them before me.'28 When he had said these things, he journeyed onward, going up toward Jerusalem.29 When they approached Bethphage and Bethany at the mount called the Olive Orchard, he sent two of his disciples,30 telling them, "Go into the village across there, and as you enter it you will find a colt tied upon which no man has ever sat. Loose it and lead it here.31 If any one asks you, 'Why are you loosing it?' say, 'The Master has need of it.' "32 Those who were sent went and found everything just as he had said to them.33 While they were loosing the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you loosing the colt?"34 They said, "The Master has need of it."35 They led it to Jesus and threw their cloaks on the colt and mounted Jesus on it.36 As he advanced, some spread their cloaks in the road,37 and as he approached the descent of the Mount of Olives all the multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God in a loud voice for all the miracles they had seen,38 saying: "Blessed be he who comes as king, in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the heights above!"39 Some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."40 But he said, "I tell you if these become silent, the stones will cry out."41 As he drew near and looked at the city, he wept over it,42 saying, "If this day you also knew the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes!43 For days will come when your enemies will throw up a palisade against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side44 and level you to the ground, and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time when you were visited."45 Entering into the Temple courts he began and drove out the dealers,46 saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer,' but you have made it a den of robbers."47 He was teaching every day in the Temple courts. But the high priests and the scribes were bent on destroying him, and so were the first citizens.48 But they could find no way to do it; for all the people hung upon him listening.
