1 São estas as últimas palavras de Davi:

Palavra de Davi, filho de Jessé;

palavra do homem

que foi exaltado,

do ungido do Deus de Jacó,

do suave salmista de Israel.

2 O Espírito do Senhor fala

por meio de mim;

e a sua palavra está

na minha língua.

3 O Deus de Israel falou,

a Rocha de Israel me disse:

"Aquele que governa o povo

com justiça,

que domina no temor de Deus,

4 é como a luz da manhã,

quando sai o sol,

como manhã sem nuvens,

cujo esplendor, depois da chuva,

faz brotar da terra a erva."

5 Não é assim que a minha casa

está para com Deus?

Pois estabeleceu comigo

uma aliança eterna,

em tudo bem-definida e segura.

Não me fará ele prosperar

toda a minha salvação

e toda a minha esperança?

6 Porém os homens malignos serão

todos lançados fora

como os espinhos,

pois não podem ser tocados

com as mãos;

7 mas quem quer tocá-los

se arma de ferro

e da haste de uma lança;

e serão totalmente queimados

no fogo ali onde estão.

8 São estes os nomes dos valentes de Davi: Josebe-Bassebete, filho de Taquemoni, o principal de três; este brandiu a sua lança contra oitocentos homens e os matou de uma só vez.

9 Depois dele, Eleazar, filho de Dodô, filho de Aoí, entre os três valentes que estavam com Davi, quando desafiaram os filisteus ali reunidos para a batalha. Quando os filhos de Israel já se haviam retirado, 10 ele se levantou e atacou os filisteus, até lhe cansar a mão e ficar grudada na espada. Naquele dia, o Senhor efetuou grande livramento, e o povo voltou para onde Eleazar estava somente para pegar os despojos.

11 Depois dele vinha Sama, filho de Agé, o hararita, quando os filisteus se juntaram em Leí, onde havia uma plantação de lentilhas; e o povo fugia dos filisteus. 12 Sama pôs-se no meio daquele terreno, e o defendeu, e matou os filisteus; e o Senhor efetuou grande livramento.

13 No tempo da colheita, três dos trinta chefes desceram à caverna de Adulão, onde Davi estava; e uma tropa de filisteus tinha acampado no vale dos Refains. 14 Nessa época Davi estava na fortaleza, e a guarnição dos filisteus estava em Belém. 15 Davi suspirou e disse:

— Quem me dera beber água do poço que está junto ao portão de Belém!

16 Então aqueles três valentes romperam pelo acampamento dos filisteus, tiraram água do poço junto ao portão de Belém e a levaram a Davi. Ele não a quis beber, mas a derramou como libação ao Senhor. 17 E disse:

— Longe de mim, ó Senhor, fazer tal coisa! Beberia eu o sangue dos homens que lá foram colocando em risco a sua vida?

E assim não a quis beber.

São estas as coisas que fizeram os três valentes.

18 Também Abisai, irmão de Joabe, filho de Zeruia, era chefe de trinta. Este, empunhando a sua lança, atacou trezentos homens e os matou. E tinha nome entre os três. 19 Ele era mais nobre do que os trinta e se tornou o chefe deles; contudo, não chegou aos primeiros três.

20 Também Benaia, filho de Joiada, era homem valente de Cabzeel e realizou grandes feitos. Ele matou dois heróis de Moabe. Desceu numa cova e nela matou um leão no tempo da neve. 21 Matou também um egípcio, homem de grande estatura. O egípcio trazia na mão uma lança, mas Benaia o atacou com um cajado, arrancou a lança da mão dele e o matou com ela. 22 Estas coisas fez Benaia, filho de Joiada, pelo que teve nome entre os primeiros três valentes. 23 Era mais nobre do que os trinta, porém não chegou aos primeiros três. Davi o pôs sobre a sua guarda.

24 Entre os trinta figuravam: Asael, irmão de Joabe; Elanã, filho de Dodô, de Belém; 25 Sama, harodita; Elica, harodita; 26 Heles, paltita; Ira, filho de Iques, tecoíta; 27 Abiezer, anatotita; Mebunai, husatita; 28 Zalmom, aoíta; Maarai, netofatita; 29 Helebe, filho de Baaná, netofatita; Itai, filho de Ribai, de Gibeá, dos filhos de Benjamim; 30 Benaia, piratonita; Hidai, do ribeiro de Gaás; 31 Abi-Albom, arbatita; Azmavete, barumita; 32 Eliaba, saalbonita; os filhos de Jasém; Jônatas; 33 Sama, hararita; Aião, filho de Sarar, ararita; 34 Elifelete, filho de Aasbai, filho de um maacatita; Eliã, filho de Aitofel, gilonita; 35 Hezrai, carmelita; Paarai, arbita; 36 Igal, filho de Natã, de Zobá; Bani, gadita; 37 Zeleque, amonita; Naarai, beerotita, o que carregava as armas de Joabe, filho de Zeruia; 38 Ira, itrita; Garebe, itrita; 39 Urias, heteu. Ao todo eram trinta e sete.

David the son of Jesse says,

the man who was raised on high says,

the anointed of the God of Jacob,

the sweet psalmist of Israel:

2 "Yahweh’s Spirit spoke by me.

His word was on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel said,

the Rock of Israel spoke to me,

‘One who rules over men righteously,

who rules in the fear of God,

4 shall be as the light of the morning when the sun rises,

a morning without clouds,

when the tender grass springs out of the earth,

through clear shining after rain.’

5 Isn’t my house so with God?

Yet he has made with me an everlasting covenant,

ordered in all things, and sure,

for it is all my salvation and all my desire.

Won’t he make it grow?

6 But all the ungodly will be as thorns to be thrust away,

because they can’t be taken with the hand.

7 The man who touches them must be armed with iron and the staff of a spear.

They will be utterly burned with fire in their place."

8 These are the names of the mighty men whom David had: Josheb Basshebeth a Tahchemonite, chief of the captains; he was called Adino the Eznite, who killed eight hundred at one time. 9 After him was Eleazar the son of Dodai the son of an Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David when they defied the Philistines who were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel had gone away. 10 He arose and struck the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand froze to the sword; and Yahweh worked a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to take plunder. 11 After him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite. The Philistines had gathered together into a troop where there was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from the Philistines. 12 But he stood in the middle of the plot and defended it, and killed the Philistines; and Yahweh worked a great victory.

13 Three of the thirty chief men went down, and came to David in the harvest time to the cave of Adullam; and the troop of the Philistines was encamped in the valley of Rephaim. 14 David was then in the stronghold; and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem. 15 David said longingly, "Oh that someone would give me water to drink from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"

16 The three mighty men broke through the army of the Philistines, and drew water out of the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate and took it and brought it to David; but he would not drink of it, but poured it out to Yahweh. 17 He said, "Be it far from me, Yahweh, that I should do this! Isn’t this the blood of the men who risked their lives to go?" Therefore he would not drink it. The three mighty men did these things.

18 Abishai, the brother of Joab, the son of Zeruiah, was chief of the three. He lifted up his spear against three hundred and killed them, and had a name among the three. 19 Wasn’t he most honorable of the three? Therefore he was made their captain. However he wasn’t included as one of the three.

20 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done mighty deeds, killed the two sons of Ariel of Moab. He also went down and killed a lion in the middle of a pit in a time of snow. 21 He killed a huge Egyptian, and the Egyptian had a spear in his hand; but he went down to him with a staff and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear. 22 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did these things, and had a name among the three mighty men. 23 He was more honorable than the thirty, but he didn’t attain to the three. David set him over his guard.

24 Asahel the brother of Joab was one of the thirty: Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem, 25 Shammah the Harodite, Elika the Harodite, 26 Helez the Paltite, Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, 27 Abiezer the Anathothite, Mebunnai the Hushathite, 28 Zalmon the Ahohite, Maharai the Netophathite, 29 Heleb the son of Baanah the Netophathite, Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah of the children of Benjamin, 30 Benaiah a Pirathonite, Hiddai of the brooks of Gaash. 31 Abialbon the Arbathite, Azmaveth the Barhumite, 32 Eliahba the Shaalbonite, the sons of Jashen, Jonathan, 33 Shammah the Hararite, Ahiam the son of Sharar the Ararite, 34 Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maacathite, Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite, 35 Hezro the Carmelite, Paarai the Arbite, 36 Igal the son of Nathan of Zobah, Bani the Gadite, 37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Beerothite, armor bearers to Joab the son of Zeruiah, 38 Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite, 39 and Uriah the Hittite: thirty-seven in all.
