1 — Irmãos e pais, escutem agora o que tenho a dizer em minha defesa.

2 Quando ouviram que Paulo lhes falava em língua hebraica, fizeram mais silêncio ainda. Paulo continuou:

3 — Eu sou judeu, nasci em Tarso da Cilícia, mas fui criado nesta cidade e aqui fui instruído aos pés de Gamaliel, segundo o rigor da Lei de nossos antepassados, sendo zeloso para com Deus, assim como todos vocês o são no dia de hoje. 4 Persegui este Caminho até a morte, prendendo homens e mulheres e lançando-os na cadeia. 5 Disto são testemunhas o sumo sacerdote e todos os anciãos. Deles eu recebi cartas para os irmãos judeus de Damasco, e fui até lá para trazer amarrados a Jerusalém os que também lá estivessem, para serem punidos.

6 — Ora, aconteceu que, enquanto eu viajava, já perto de Damasco, quase ao meio-dia, repentinamente, uma grande luz do céu brilhou ao redor de mim. 7 Então caí por terra, ouvindo uma voz que me dizia: "Saulo, Saulo, por que você me persegue?" 8 Perguntei: "Senhor, quem é você?" Ao que me respondeu: "Eu sou Jesus, o Nazareno, a quem você persegue."

9 — Os que estavam comigo viram a luz, sem, contudo, perceber o sentido da voz de quem falava comigo. 10 Então perguntei: "Senhor, o que devo fazer?" E o Senhor me disse: "Levante-se, entre em Damasco, onde lhe dirão tudo o que você precisa fazer." 11 Tendo ficado cego por causa da intensidade daquela luz, guiado pela mão dos que estavam comigo, cheguei a Damasco.

12 — Um homem chamado Ananias, piedoso conforme a Lei, tendo bom testemunho de todos os judeus que ali moravam, 13 veio procurar-me e, chegando perto de mim, disse: "Irmão Saulo, recupere a visão!" Nessa mesma hora, recuperei a visão e olhei para ele. 14 Então ele disse: "O Deus de nossos pais escolheu você de antemão para conhecer a vontade dele, ver o Justo e ouvir a voz dele. 15 Porque você terá de ser testemunha dele diante de todos, anunciando as coisas que você tem visto e ouvido. 16 E agora, o que está esperando? Levante-se, receba o batismo e lave os seus pecados, invocando o nome dele."

17 — Quando voltei para Jerusalém, enquanto orava no templo, sobreveio-me um êxtase, 18 e vi o Senhor. Ele me disse: "Ande logo e saia imediatamente de Jerusalém, porque não aceitarão o seu testemunho a meu respeito." 19 Eu respondi: "Senhor, eles bem sabem que eu ia de sinagoga em sinagoga, prendendo e açoitando os que criam em ti. 20 Quando se derramava o sangue de Estêvão, tua testemunha, eu também estava presente, consentia nisso e até guardei as capas dos que o matavam." 21 Mas ele me disse: "Vá, porque eu o enviarei para longe, aos gentios."

22 Até este ponto a multidão ficou ouvindo. Mas, quando Paulo disse isso, começaram a gritar bem alto:

— Fora com ele! Mate-o, porque ele não merece viver!

23 Enquanto eles gritavam, tiravam as suas capas e jogavam poeira para o ar, 24 o comandante ordenou que Paulo fosse recolhido à fortaleza e que, sob açoite, fosse interrogado para saber por que motivo estavam gritando assim contra ele. 25 Quando o estavam amarrando com correias, Paulo perguntou ao centurião que ali estava:

— Será que vocês têm o direito de açoitar um cidadão romano, sem que ele tenha sido condenado?

26 Ouvindo isto, o centurião procurou o comandante e lhe disse:

— Que é isso que o senhor está prestes a fazer? Saiba que aquele homem é cidadão romano.

27 Então o comandante veio e perguntou a Paulo:

— Diga-me uma coisa: você é romano?

Paulo respondeu:

— Sou.

28 E o comandante disse:

— Eu tive de gastar muito dinheiro para conseguir essa cidadania.

Ao que Paulo respondeu:

— Pois eu a tenho de nascença.

29 Imediatamente se afastaram os que iam interrogá-lo com açoites. O próprio comandante ficou com medo quando soube que Paulo era romano, porque tinha mandado amarrá-lo.

30 No dia seguinte, querendo certificar-se dos motivos por que Paulo vinha sendo acusado pelos judeus, o comandante o soltou e ordenou que se reunissem os principais sacerdotes e todo o Sinédrio. E, mandando trazer Paulo, apresentou-o diante deles.

1 "Brothers and fathers, listen to the defense which I now make to you."

2 When they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they were even more quiet.

He said, 3 "I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, instructed according to the strict tradition of the law of our fathers, being zealous for God, even as you all are today. 4 I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women, 5 as also the high priest and all the council of the elders testify, from whom also I received letters to the brothers, and traveled to Damascus to bring them also who were there to Jerusalem in bonds to be punished.

6 "As I made my journey and came close to Damascus, about noon suddenly a great light shone around me from the sky. 7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?’ 8 I answered, ‘Who are you, Lord?’ He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you persecute.’

9 "Those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they didn’t understand the voice of him who spoke to me. 10 I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ The Lord said to me, ‘Arise, and go into Damascus. There you will be told about all things which are appointed for you to do.’ 11 When I couldn’t see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

12 "One Ananias, a devout man according to the law, well reported of by all the Jews who lived in Damascus, 13 came to me, and standing by me said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight!’ In that very hour I looked up at him. 14 He said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know his will, and to see the Righteous One, and to hear a voice from his mouth. 15 For you will be a witness for him to all men of what you have seen and heard. 16 Now why do you wait? Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

17 "When I had returned to Jerusalem and while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance 18 and saw him saying to me, ‘Hurry and get out of Jerusalem quickly, because they will not receive testimony concerning me from you.’ 19 I said, ‘Lord, they themselves know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue those who believed in you. 20 When the blood of Stephen, your witness, was shed, I also was standing by, consenting to his death, and guarding the cloaks of those who killed him.’

21 "He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you out far from here to the Gentiles.’"

22 They listened to him until he said that; then they lifted up their voice and said, "Rid the earth of this fellow, for he isn’t fit to live!"

23 As they cried out, threw off their cloaks, and threw dust into the air, 24 the commanding officer commanded him to be brought into the barracks, ordering him to be examined by scourging, that he might know for what crime they shouted against him like that. 25 When they had tied him up with thongs, Paul asked the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and not found guilty?"

26 When the centurion heard it, he went to the commanding officer and told him, "Watch what you are about to do, for this man is a Roman!"

27 The commanding officer came and asked him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?"

He said, "Yes."

28 The commanding officer answered, "I bought my citizenship for a great price."

Paul said, "But I was born a Roman."

29 Immediately those who were about to examine him departed from him, and the commanding officer also was afraid when he realized that he was a Roman, because he had bound him. 30 But on the next day, desiring to know the truth about why he was accused by the Jews, he freed him from the bonds and commanded the chief priests and all the council to come together, and brought Paul down and set him before them.
