1. KJV King James Version

12 Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus, and say unto him, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou sealest up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardius, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets and of thy pipes was prepared in thee in the day that thou wast created.*28.13 sardius: or, ruby*28.13 beryl: or, chrysolite*28.13 emerald: or, chrysoprase 14 Thou art the anointed cherub that covereth; and I have set thee so: thou wast upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day that thou wast created, till iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise they have filled the midst of thee with violence, and thou hast sinned: therefore I will cast thee as profane out of the mountain of God: and I will destroy thee, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. 17 Thine heart was lifted up because of thy beauty, thou hast corrupted thy wisdom by reason of thy brightness: I will cast thee to the ground, I will lay thee before kings, that they may behold thee.

12 "Son of man, sing this funeral song for the king of Tyre. Give him this message from the Sovereign Lord:

"You were the model of perfection,

full of wisdom and exquisite in beauty.

   13 You were in Eden,

   the garden of God.

Your clothing was adorned with every precious stone*28:13 The identification of some of these gemstones is uncertain.—

red carnelian, pale-green peridot, white moonstone,

   blue-green beryl, onyx, green jasper,

blue lapis lazuli, turquoise, and emerald—

   all beautifully crafted for you

and set in the finest gold.

   They were given to you

on the day you were created.

14 I ordained and anointed you

as the mighty angelic guardian.*28:14 Hebrew guardian cherub; similarly in 28:16.

You had access to the holy mountain of God

and walked among the stones of fire.

15 "You were blameless in all you did

from the day you were created

until the day evil was found in you.

16 Your rich commerce led you to violence,

   and you sinned.

So I banished you in disgrace

   from the mountain of God.

I expelled you, O mighty guardian,

from your place among the stones of fire.

17 Your heart was filled with pride

   because of all your beauty.

   Your wisdom was corrupted

   by your love of splendor.

So I threw you to the ground

and exposed you to the curious gaze of kings.

12 And say to him: Thus saith the Lord God: Thou wast the seal of resemblance, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty. 13 Thou wast in the pleasures of the paradise of God: every precious stone teas thy covering: the sardius, the topaz, and the jasper, the chrysolite, and the onyx, and the beryl, the sapphire, and the carbuncle, and the emerald: gold the work of thy beauty: and thy pipes were prepared in the day that thou wast created. 14 Thou a cherub stretched out, and protecting, and I set thee in the holy mountain of God, thou hast walked in the midst of the stones of fire. 15 Thou wast perfect in thy ways from the day of thy creation, until iniquity was found in thee. 16 By the multitude of thy merchandise, thy inner parts were filled with iniquity, and thou hast sinned: and I cast thee out from the mountain of God, and destroyed thee, O covering cherub, out of the midst of the stones of fire. 17 And thy heart was lifted up with thy beauty: thou best lost thy wisdom in thy beauty, I have cast thee to the ground: I have set thee before the face of kings, that they might behold thee.

8. MSG The Message

11-19 God’s Message came to me: "Son of man, raise a funeral song over the king of Tyre. Tell him, A Message from God, the Master:

"You had everything going for you.

You were in Eden, God’s garden.

   You were dressed in splendor,

   your robe studded with jewels:

   Carnelian, peridot, and moonstone,

   beryl, onyx, and jasper,

   Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald,

all in settings of engraved gold.

A robe was prepared for you

the same day you were created.

   You were the anointed cherub.

I placed you on the mountain of God.

   You strolled in magnificence

   among the stones of fire.

From the day of your creation

   you were sheer perfection . . .

and then imperfection—evil!—was detected in you.

   In much buying and selling

   you turned violent, you sinned!

I threw you, disgraced, off the mountain of God.

   I threw you out—you, the anointed angel-cherub.

No more strolling among the gems of fire for you!

Your beauty went to your head.

   You corrupted wisdom

by using it to get worldly fame.

I threw you to the ground,

sent you sprawling before an audience of kings

and let them gloat over your demise.

By sin after sin after sin,

by your corrupt ways of doing business,

you defiled your holy places of worship.

So I set a fire around and within you.

It burned you up. I reduced you to ashes.

   All anyone sees now

when they look for you is ashes,

   a pitiful mound of ashes.

   All who once knew you

   now throw up their hands:

   ‘This can’t have happened!

   This has happened!’"
