1. KJV King James Version

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

39 And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

2. NIV New International Version

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, "Will you give me a drink?"

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, "You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.*4:9 Or do not use dishes Samaritans have used)

26 Then Jesus declared, "I, the one speaking to you—I am he."

27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, "What do you want?" or "Why are you talking with her?"

39 Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony, "He told me everything I ever did."

7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, "Please give me a drink."

9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans.*4:9 Some manuscripts do not include this sentence. She said to Jesus, "You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?"

26 Then Jesus told her, "I Am the Messiah!"*4:26 Or "The ‘I Am’ is here"; or "I am the Lord"; Greek reads "I am, the one speaking to you." See Exod 3:14.

27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, "What do you want with her?" or "Why are you talking to her?"

39 Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, "He told me everything I ever did!"

7 There cometh a woman of Samaria, to draw water. Jesus saith to her: Give me to drink. 9 Then that Samaritan woman saith to him: How dost thou, being a Jew, ask of me to drink, who am a Samaritan woman? For the Jews do not communicate with the Samaritans. 26 Jesus saith to her: I am he, who am speaking with thee. 27 And immediately his disciples came; and they wondered that he talked with the woman. Yet no man said: What seekest thou? or, why talkest thou with her? 39 Now of that city many of the Samaritans believed in him, for the word of the woman giving testimony: He told me all things whatsoever I have done.

8. MSG The Message

7,8 A woman, a Samaritan, came to draw water. Jesus said, "Would you give me a drink of water?" (His disciples had gone to the village to buy food for lunch.)

9 The Samaritan woman, taken aback, asked, "How come you, a Jew, are asking me, a Samaritan woman, for a drink?" (Jews in those days wouldn’t be caught dead talking to Samaritans.)

26 "I am he," said Jesus. "You don’t have to wait any longer or look any further."

27 Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked. They couldn’t believe he was talking with that kind of a woman. No one said what they were all thinking, but their faces showed it.

39-42 Many of the Samaritans from that village committed themselves to him because of the woman’s witness: "He knew all about the things I did. He knows me inside and out!" They asked him to stay on, so Jesus stayed two days. A lot more people entrusted their lives to him when they heard what he had to say. They said to the woman, "We’re no longer taking this on your say-so. We’ve heard it for ourselves and know it for sure. He’s the Savior of the world!"
