Matthew 26

The Plot Against Jesus

1 When Jesus had finished saying all these things, he said to his disciples, 2 "As you know, the Passover is two days away—and the Son of Man will be handed over to be crucified."

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people assembled in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and they schemed to arrest Jesus secretly and kill him. 5 "But not during the festival," they said, "or there may be a riot among the people."

Jesus Anointed at Bethany

6 While Jesus was in Bethany in the home of Simon the Leper, 7 a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, which she poured on his head as he was reclining at the table.

8 When the disciples saw this, they were indignant. "Why this waste?" they asked. 9 "This perfume could have been sold at a high price and the money given to the poor."

10 Aware of this, Jesus said to them, "Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me.11 The poor you will always have with you,26:11 See Deut. 15:11.but you will not always have me.12 When she poured this perfume on my body, she did it to prepare me for burial.13 Truly I tell you, wherever this gospel is preached throughout the world, what she has done will also be told, in memory of her."

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

14 Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests 15 and asked, "What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?" So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. 16 From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

The Last Supper

17 On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, the disciples came to Jesus and asked, "Where do you want us to make preparations for you to eat the Passover?"

18 He replied, "Go into the city to a certain man and tell him, ‘The Teacher says: My appointed time is near. I am going to celebrate the Passover with my disciples at your house.’ "19 So the disciples did as Jesus had directed them and prepared the Passover.

20 When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the Twelve. 21 And while they were eating, he said, "Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me."

22 They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, "Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?"

23 Jesus replied, "The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.24 The Son of Man will go just as it is written about him. But woe to that man who betrays the Son of Man! It would be better for him if he had not been born."

25 Then Judas, the one who would betray him, said, "Surely you don’t mean me, Rabbi?"

Jesus answered, "You have said so."

26 While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."

27 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you.28 This is my blood of the26:28 Some manuscripts the newcovenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.29 I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom."

30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial

31 Then Jesus told them, "This very night you will all fall away on account of me, for it is written:

" ‘I will strike the shepherd,

and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 26:31 Zech. 13:7

32 But after I have risen, I will go ahead of you into Galilee."

33 Peter replied, "Even if all fall away on account of you, I never will."

34 "Truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "this very night, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times."

35 But Peter declared, "Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you." And all the other disciples said the same.

Gethsemane

36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, "Sit here while I go over there and pray."37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me."

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will."

40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. "Couldn’t you men keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. 41 "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."

42 He went away a second time and prayed, "My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done."

43 When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. 44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third time, saying the same thing.

45 Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour has come, and the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners.46 Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!"

Jesus Arrested

47 While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, arrived. With him was a large crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests and the elders of the people. 48 Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him." 49 Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed him.

50 Jesus replied, "Do what you came for, friend."26:50 Or "Why have you come, friend?"

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. 51 With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear.

52 "Put your sword back in its place," Jesus said to him, "for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.53 Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?54 But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?"

55 In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, "Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me.56 But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

Jesus Before the Sanhedrin

57 Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled. 58 But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest. He entered and sat down with the guards to see the outcome.

59 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death. 60 But they did not find any, though many false witnesses came forward.

Finally two came forward 61 and declared, "This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and rebuild it in three days.’ "

62 Then the high priest stood up and said to Jesus, "Are you not going to answer? What is this testimony that these men are bringing against you?" 63 But Jesus remained silent.

The high priest said to him, "I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

64 "You have said so," Jesus replied. "But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven."26:64 See Psalm 110:1; Daniel 7:13.

65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy. 66 What do you think?"

"He is worthy of death," they answered.

67 Then they spit in his face and struck him with their fists. Others slapped him 68 and said, "Prophesy to us, Messiah. Who hit you?"

Peter Disowns Jesus

69 Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.

70 But he denied it before them all. "I don’t know what you’re talking about," he said.

71 Then he went out to the gateway, where another servant girl saw him and said to the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth."

72 He denied it again, with an oath: "I don’t know the man!"

73 After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, "Surely you are one of them; your accent gives you away."

74 Then he began to call down curses, and he swore to them, "I don’t know the man!"

Immediately a rooster crowed. 75 Then Peter remembered the word Jesus had spoken: "Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times." And he went outside and wept bitterly.

A conspiração contra Jesus

1 Quando Jesus acabou de dizer essas coisas, disse aos seus discípulos:

2 — Como vocês sabem, estamos a dois dias da Páscoa, e o Filho do homem será entregue para ser crucificado.

3 Naquela ocasião, os chefes dos sacerdotes e os líderes religiosos do povo se reuniram no pátio do sumo sacerdote, cujo nome era Caifás, 4 e juntos planejaram prender Jesus de maneira fraudulenta e matá-lo. 5 Contudo, diziam: "Não durante a festa, para que não haja tumulto no meio do povo".

Jesus é ungido em Betânia

6 Quando Jesus estava em Betânia, na casa de Simão, o leproso,26.6 A palavra grega era utilizada para designar vários tipos de doença de pele, não somente lepra.7 aproximou-se dele uma mulher com um frasco de alabastro que continha um perfume muito caro. Ela o derramou sobre a cabeça de Jesus quando ele se encontrava reclinado à mesa.

8 Ao verem isso, os discípulos se indignaram e perguntaram:

— Por que este desperdício? 9 Este perfume poderia ser vendido por alto preço, e o dinheiro ser dado aos pobres.

10 Percebendo isso, Jesus lhes disse:

— Por que vocês estão perturbando essa mulher? Ela praticou uma boa ação para comigo. 11 Pois os pobres vocês sempre terão com vocês, mas a mim nem sempre terão. 12 Quando derramou este perfume sobre o meu corpo, ela o fez a fim de me preparar para o sepultamento. 13 Em verdade lhes digo que, onde quer que este evangelho for anunciado em todo o mundo, também o que ela fez será contado em sua memória.

Judas concorda em trair Jesus

14 Então, um dos Doze, chamado Judas Iscariotes, dirigiu-se aos chefes dos sacerdotes 15 e lhes perguntou:

— O que me dareis se eu o entregar a vós?

Acordaram com ele trinta moedas de prata. 16 Desse momento em diante, Judas procurava uma oportunidade para entregá-lo.

A ceia do Senhor

17 No primeiro dia da Festa dos Pães sem Fermento, os discípulos dirigiram-se a Jesus e lhe perguntaram:

— Onde queres que preparemos a refeição da Páscoa para comeres?

18 Ele respondeu:

— Entrem na cidade, procurem certo homem e digam-lhe: "O Mestre diz: ‘O meu tempo está próximo. Vou celebrar a Páscoa com os meus discípulos na sua casa’ ". 19 Os discípulos fizeram como Jesus os havia instruído e prepararam a Páscoa.

20 Ao anoitecer, Jesus estava reclinado à mesa com os Doze. 21 Enquanto comiam, ele disse:

— Em verdade lhes digo que um de vocês me trairá.

22 Eles ficaram muito tristes e começaram a dizer-lhe, um após outro:

— Com certeza, não sou eu, Senhor!

23 Jesus afirmou:

— Aquele que comeu comigo do mesmo prato há de me trair. 24 O Filho do homem irá, como está escrito a seu respeito, mas ai daquele por quem o Filho do homem é traído! Melhor seria que não houvesse nascido.

25 Então, Judas, que o trairia, disse:

— Com certeza, não sou eu, Rabi!26.25 Isto é, Mestre; também no versículo 49.

Jesus afirmou:

— Foi você quem disse isso.26.25 Ou Você mesmo o disse!

26 Enquanto comiam, Jesus pegou o pão, deu graças, partiu-o e o deu aos discípulos, dizendo:

— Peguem e comam; isto é o meu corpo.

27 Em seguida, pegou o cálice, deu graças e o ofereceu aos discípulos, dizendo:

— Bebam dele todos vocês. 28 Isto é o meu sangue da26.28 Há manuscritos que trazem da nova. aliança, que é derramado em favor de muitos para perdão de pecados. 29 Eu lhes digo que, de agora em diante, não beberei deste fruto da videira até aquele dia em que beberei o vinho novo com vocês no reino do meu Pai.

30 Depois de terem cantado um hino, saíram para o monte das Oliveiras.

Jesus prediz que Pedro o negará

31 Então, Jesus lhes disse:

— Ainda esta noite, todos vocês me abandonarão, pois está escrito:

"Ferirei o pastor,

e as ovelhas do rebanho serão dispersas".26.31 Zc 13.7.

32 — Mas, depois de ressuscitar, irei adiante de vocês para a Galileia.

33 Pedro respondeu:

— Ainda que todos te abandonem, eu nunca te abandonarei!

34 Jesus respondeu:

— Em verdade lhe digo que ainda esta noite, antes que o galo cante, três vezes você me negará.

35 Pedro, porém, declarou:

— Mesmo que seja preciso que eu morra contigo, nunca te negarei.

E todos os outros discípulos disseram o mesmo.

Jesus no Getsêmani

36 Então, Jesus foi com os seus discípulos para um lugar chamado Getsêmani e lhes disse:

— Sentem-se aqui enquanto vou ali orar.

37 Levando consigo Pedro e os dois filhos de Zebedeu, começou a ficar triste e angustiado. 38 Então, lhes disse:

— A minha alma está profundamente triste, em uma tristeza mortal. Fiquem aqui e vigiem comigo.

39 Indo um pouco mais adiante, prostrou-se com o rosto em terra e orou:

— Meu Pai, se for possível, afasta de mim este cálice; contudo, não seja como eu quero, mas como tu queres.

40 Depois, voltou aos seus discípulos e os encontrou dormindo.

— Vocês não puderam vigiar comigo nem por uma hora? — perguntou a Pedro. 41 — Vigiem e orem para que não caiam em tentação. O espírito está pronto, mas a carne é fraca.

42 Ele se retirou, pela segunda vez, e orou:

— Meu Pai, se não for possível afastar de mim este cálice sem que eu o beba, faça-se a tua vontade.

43 Quando voltou, de novo os encontrou dormindo, porque os olhos deles estavam pesados. 44 Então, deixou-os novamente e orou pela terceira vez, dizendo as mesmas palavras.

45 Depois, voltou aos discípulos e lhes disse:

— Vocês ainda dormem e descansam? Chegou a hora! O Filho do homem será entregue nas mãos de pecadores. 46 Levantem-se e vamos! Aí vem o meu traidor!

Jesus é preso

47 Enquanto ele ainda falava, Judas, um dos Doze, chegou. Com ele estava uma grande multidão armada de espadas e varas, enviada pelos chefes dos sacerdotes e líderes religiosos do povo. 48 O traidor havia combinado um sinal com eles: "Ele é aquele a quem eu saudar com um beijo; prendam-no". 49 Dirigindo-se imediatamente a Jesus, Judas disse:

— Saudações, Rabi!

E o beijou.

50 Jesus, porém, lhe perguntou:

— Amigo, o que o traz aqui?26.50 Ou Amigo, faça o que veio para fazer.

Então, os homens se aproximaram, agarraram Jesus e o prenderam. 51 Um dos que estavam com Jesus, estendendo a mão, sacou a espada e feriu o servo do sumo sacerdote, decepando-lhe a orelha.

52 Jesus lhe disse:

— Guarde a espada! Pois todos os que empunham a espada morrerão pela espada. 53 Você acha que eu não posso pedir ao meu Pai, e ele não poria imediatamente à minha disposição mais de doze legiões de anjos? 54 Como, então, se cumpririam as Escrituras que dizem que as coisas deveriam acontecer desta forma?

55 Naquela hora, Jesus disse à multidão:

— Acaso estou chefiando alguma rebelião, para que venham me prender com espadas e varas? Todos os dias, estive com vocês, ensinando no templo, e vocês não me prenderam. 56 Mas tudo isso aconteceu para que se cumprissem as Escrituras dos profetas.

Então, todos os discípulos o abandonaram e fugiram.

Jesus diante do Sinédrio

57 Os que prenderam Jesus levaram-no para Caifás, o sumo sacerdote, em cuja casa se haviam reunido os mestres da lei e os líderes religiosos. 58 Pedro o seguiu de longe até o pátio do sumo sacerdote. Ele entrou e sentou-se com os guardas para ver o que aconteceria.

59 Os chefes dos sacerdotes e todo o Sinédrio26.59 Conselho dos principais líderes do povo judeu. procuravam um depoimento falso contra Jesus, para que pudessem condená-lo à morte. 60 No entanto, não encontraram nenhum, embora tenham se apresentado muitas falsas testemunhas.

Finalmente, apresentaram-se duas, 61 que declararam:

— Este homem disse: "Sou capaz de destruir o templo de Deus e reconstruí-lo em três dias".

62 Então, o sumo sacerdote levantou-se e perguntou a Jesus:

— Você não vai responder à acusação que estes fazem contra você?

63 Jesus, porém, permaneceu em silêncio.

O sumo sacerdote lhe disse:

— Exijo que jure pelo Deus vivo: diga-nos se você é o Cristo, o Filho de Deus.

64 — Tu mesmo o disseste26.64 Ou É como disseste. — respondeu Jesus. — Mas eu digo a todos vocês: chegará o dia em que verão o Filho do homem assentado à direita do Poderoso e vindo sobre as nuvens do céu.

65 Então, o sumo sacerdote rasgou as próprias vestes e disse:

— Blasfemou! Por que precisamos de mais testemunhas? Vocês ouviram a blasfêmia agora. 66 O que lhes parece?

— É digno de morte! — responderam.

67 Então, alguns lhe cuspiram no rosto e lhe deram murros. Outros lhe davam tapas 68 e diziam:

— Profetize para nós, Cristo. Quem foi que bateu em você?

Pedro nega Jesus

69 Pedro estava sentado no pátio, e uma criada, aproximando-se dele, disse:

— Você também estava com Jesus, o galileu.

70 Contudo, ele negou diante de todos, dizendo:

— Não sei do que você está falando.

71 Depois, saiu em direção à porta, onde outra criada o viu e disse aos que estavam ali:

— Este homem estava com Jesus, o Nazareno.

72 E ele, jurando, negou outra vez:

— Não conheço esse homem!

73 Pouco tempo depois, os que estavam por ali chegaram a Pedro e disseram:

— Certamente você é um deles. O seu modo de falar o denuncia.

74 Aí ele começou a amaldiçoar e a jurar:
