Zephaniah 2

Judah and Jerusalem Judged Along With the Nations

Judah Summoned to Repent

1 Gather together, gather yourselves together,

you shameful nation,

2 before the decree takes effect

and that day passes like windblown chaff,

before the Lord’s fierce anger

comes upon you,

before the day of the Lord’s wrath

comes upon you.

3 Seek the Lord, all you humble of the land,

you who do what he commands.

Seek righteousness, seek humility;

perhaps you will be sheltered

on the day of the Lord’s anger.

Philistia

4 Gaza will be abandoned

and Ashkelon left in ruins.

At midday Ashdod will be emptied

and Ekron uprooted.

5 Woe to you who live by the sea,

you Kerethite people;

the word of the Lord is against you,

Canaan, land of the Philistines.

He says, "I will destroy you,

and none will be left."

6 The land by the sea will become pastures

having wells for shepherds

and pens for flocks.

7 That land will belong

to the remnant of the people of Judah;

there they will find pasture.

In the evening they will lie down

in the houses of Ashkelon.

The Lord their God will care for them;

he will restore their fortunes.*2:7 Or will bring back their captives

Moab and Ammon

8 "I have heard the insults of Moab

and the taunts of the Ammonites,

who insulted my people

and made threats against their land.

9 Therefore, as surely as I live,"

declares the Lord Almighty,

the God of Israel,

"surely Moab will become like Sodom,

the Ammonites like Gomorrah—

a place of weeds and salt pits,

a wasteland forever.

The remnant of my people will plunder them;

the survivors of my nation will inherit their land."

10 This is what they will get in return for their pride,

for insulting and mocking

the people of the Lord Almighty.

11 The Lord will be awesome to them

when he destroys all the gods of the earth.

Distant nations will bow down to him,

all of them in their own lands.

Cush

12 "You Cushites,*2:12 That is, people from the upper Nile region too,

will be slain by my sword."

Assyria

13 He will stretch out his hand against the north

and destroy Assyria,

leaving Nineveh utterly desolate

and dry as the desert.

14 Flocks and herds will lie down there,

creatures of every kind.

The desert owl and the screech owl

will roost on her columns.

Their hooting will echo through the windows,

rubble will fill the doorways,

the beams of cedar will be exposed.

15 This is the city of revelry

that lived in safety.

She said to herself,

"I am the one! And there is none besides me."

What a ruin she has become,

a lair for wild beasts!

All who pass by her scoff

and shake their fists.

3 Busquem o Senhor, todos vocês, os humildes da terra,

vocês que fazem o que ele ordena.

Busquem a justiça, busquem a humildade;

talvez vocês tenham abrigo

no dia da ira do Senhor.

Juízo contra a Filístia

4 Gaza será abandonada,

e Ascalom ficará arruinada.

Ao meio-dia, Asdode será banida,

e Ecrom será desarraigada.

5 Ai de vocês que vivem junto ao mar,

nação dos queretitas!*2.5 A Septuaginta traz estrangeiros cretenses.

A palavra do Senhor está contra você,

ó Canaã, terra dos filisteus.

"Eu a destruirei,

e não sobrará ninguém."

6 Essa terra junto ao mar se tornará em pastagens,

com poços para pastores

e currais para ovelhas.

7 Essa terra pertencerá

ao remanescente da tribo de Judá.

Ali encontrarão pastagem

e, ao entardecer, se deitarão

nas casas de Ascalom.

O Senhor, o seu Deus, cuidará deles

e lhes restaurará a sorte.*2.7 Ou trará de volta os seus cativos.

Juízo contra Moabe e Amom

8 "Ouvi os insultos de Moabe

e as zombarias dos amonitas,

que insultaram o meu povo

e falaram com arrogância contra o seu território.

9 Por isso, tão certo como eu vivo",

declara o Senhor dos Exércitos,

o Deus de Israel,

"Moabe se tornará como Sodoma,

e os amonitas, como Gomorra:

um lugar tomado por ervas daninhas e poços de sal,

uma desolação perpétua.

O remanescente do meu povo os saqueará;

os sobreviventes da minha nação herdarão a terra deles."

10 É isso que eles receberão como recompensa pelo seu orgulho,

por insultarem e ridicularizarem

o povo do Senhor dos Exércitos.

11 O Senhor será terrível contra eles

quando destruir todos os deuses da terra.

As nações de todo o mundo o adorarão,

cada uma na sua própria terra.

Juízo contra Cuxe

12 "Vocês também, ó cuxitas,*2.12 Isto é, do povo da região sul do rio Nilo.

serão mortos pela minha espada."

Juízo contra a Assíria

13 Ele estenderá a sua mão contra o norte

e destruirá a Assíria,

deixando Nínive totalmente em ruínas,

tão seca como o deserto.

14 No meio dela se deitarão rebanhos

e todo tipo de animais selvagens.

Até a coruja-do-deserto e a coruja-dos-campos

se empoleirarão no topo das suas colunas.

Os seus gritos ecoarão pelas janelas.

Haverá entulho nas entradas,

e as vigas de cedro ficarão expostas.

15 Esta é a cidade que exultava,

vivendo despreocupada,

que dizia consigo mesma:

"Eu e mais ninguém!".

Como se tornou um lugar desolado!

Uma toca de animais selvagens!

Todos os que passam por ela zombam

e gesticulam com as mãos.
