Zephaniah 3

Jerusalem

1 Woe to the city of oppressors,

rebellious and defiled!

2 She obeys no one,

she accepts no correction.

She does not trust in the Lord,

she does not draw near to her God.

3 Her officials within her

are roaring lions;

her rulers are evening wolves,

who leave nothing for the morning.

4 Her prophets are unprincipled;

they are treacherous people.

Her priests profane the sanctuary

and do violence to the law.

5 The Lord within her is righteous;

he does no wrong.

Morning by morning he dispenses his justice,

and every new day he does not fail,

yet the unrighteous know no shame.

Jerusalem Remains Unrepentant

6 "I have destroyed nations;

their strongholds are demolished.

I have left their streets deserted,

with no one passing through.

Their cities are laid waste;

they are deserted and empty.

7 Of Jerusalem I thought,

‘Surely you will fear me

and accept correction!’

Then her place of refuge*3:7 Or her sanctuary would not be destroyed,

nor all my punishments come upon*3:7 Or all those I appointed over her.

But they were still eager

to act corruptly in all they did.

8 Therefore wait for me,"

declares the Lord,

"for the day I will stand up to testify.*3:8 Septuagint and Syriac; Hebrew will rise up to plunder

I have decided to assemble the nations,

to gather the kingdoms

and to pour out my wrath on them—

all my fierce anger.

The whole world will be consumed

by the fire of my jealous anger.

Restoration of Israel’s Remnant

9 "Then I will purify the lips of the peoples,

that all of them may call on the name of the Lord

and serve him shoulder to shoulder.

10 From beyond the rivers of Cush*3:10 That is, the upper Nile region

my worshipers, my scattered people,

will bring me offerings.

11 On that day you, Jerusalem, will not be put to shame

for all the wrongs you have done to me,

because I will remove from you

your arrogant boasters.

Never again will you be haughty

on my holy hill.

12 But I will leave within you

the meek and humble.

The remnant of Israel

will trust in the name of the Lord.

13 They will do no wrong;

they will tell no lies.

A deceitful tongue

will not be found in their mouths.

They will eat and lie down

and no one will make them afraid."

14 Sing, Daughter Zion;

shout aloud, Israel!

Be glad and rejoice with all your heart,

Daughter Jerusalem!

15 The Lord has taken away your punishment,

he has turned back your enemy.

The Lord, the King of Israel, is with you;

never again will you fear any harm.

16 On that day

they will say to Jerusalem,

"Do not fear, Zion;

do not let your hands hang limp.

17 The Lord your God is with you,

the Mighty Warrior who saves.

He will take great delight in you;

in his love he will no longer rebuke you,

but will rejoice over you with singing."

18 "I will remove from you

all who mourn over the loss of your appointed festivals,

which is a burden and reproach for you.

19 At that time I will deal

with all who oppressed you.

I will rescue the lame;

I will gather the exiles.

I will give them praise and honor

in every land where they have suffered shame.

20 At that time I will gather you;

at that time I will bring you home.

I will give you honor and praise

among all the peoples of the earth

when I restore your fortunes*3:20 Or I bring back your captives

before your very eyes,"

says the Lord.

O futuro de Jerusalém

1 Ai da cidade rebelde,

impura e opressora!*3.1 A Septuaginta traz Ah, a gloriosa e liberta cidade, a pomba!

2 Não ouve ninguém

nem aceita correção.

Não confia no Senhor

nem se aproxima do seu Deus.

3 No meio dela os seus líderes

são leões que rugem.

Os seus juízes são lobos no crepúsculo

que nada deixam para a manhã seguinte.

4 Os seus profetas são irresponsáveis,

homens traiçoeiros.

Os seus sacerdotes profanam o santuário

e cometem violência contra a lei.

5 No meio dela está o Senhor,

que é justo e jamais comete injustiça.

A cada manhã, ele ministra a sua justiça

e, a cada novo dia, ele não falha,

mas o injusto não se envergonha da sua injustiça.

6 "Eliminei nações;

as suas fortificações estão devastadas.

Deixei desertas as suas ruas,

ninguém passa por elas.

As suas cidades estão desoladas;

ninguém foi deixado, nenhum habitante.

7 Eu disse à cidade:

‘Com certeza, você me temerá

e aceitará correção!

Então, a sua habitação não seria eliminada,

nem cairiam sobre ela todos os meus castigos’.

Mas eles ainda estavam ávidos

por corromper tudo o que faziam.

8 Por isso, esperem por mim", declara o Senhor,

"pelo dia em que eu me levantar para testemunhar.*3.8 Ou para o despojo.

Decidi ajuntar as nações,

reunir os reinos

e derramar a minha ira sobre eles —

toda a minha impetuosa indignação.

O mundo inteiro será consumido

pelo fogo do meu zelo.

Restauração do remanescente de Israel

9 "Então, purificarei os lábios dos povos,

para que todos invoquem o nome do Senhor

e sirvam a ele de comum acordo.

10 Desde além dos rios de Cuxe,

os meus adoradores, o meu povo disperso,

me trarão ofertas.

11 Naquele dia, vocês não serão envergonhados

por todos os seus atos de rebelião contra mim,

porque retirarei do seu meio

os que se regozijam no seu orgulho.

Nunca mais vocês serão altivos

no meu santo monte.

12 Mas deixarei no seu meio

um povo manso*3.12 Ou pobre. e humilde,

que se refugiará no nome do Senhor.

13 O remanescente de Israel não cometerá injustiças,

não contará mentiras,

nem se achará na sua boca

uma língua enganosa.

Eles se alimentarão e descansarão,

e ninguém os espantará."

14 Cante, ó Filha de Sião!

Exulte, ó Israel!

Alegre-se, regozije-se de todo o coração,

ó Filha de Jerusalém!

15 O Senhor anulou a sentença contra você

e fez retroceder os seus inimigos.

O Senhor, o Rei de Israel, está no seu meio;

nunca mais você temerá mal algum.

16 Naquele dia,

dirão a Jerusalém:

"Não tema, ó Sião,

não deixe as suas mãos enfraquecerem.

17 O Senhor, o seu Deus, está no seu meio,

um guerreiro poderoso para salvar.

Ele terá imensa alegria em você;

com o seu amor a renovará.*3.17 Conforme a Septuaginta e a Versão Siríaca. O Texto Massorético traz ele ficará em silêncio em seu amor.

Ele se regozijará em você com brados de alegria".

18 "Eu ajuntarei os que choram pelas festas fixas,

os que se afastaram de vocês,

para que isso não mais pese como vergonha sobre vocês.

19 Nessa época, agirei

contra todos os que oprimiram vocês.

Salvarei os aleijados

e ajuntarei os dispersos.

Darei a eles louvor e honra

em todas as terras onde foram envergonhados.

20 Naquele tempo, ajuntarei vocês;

naquele tempo, eu os reunirei.

Eu darei a vocês honra e louvor

entre todos os povos da terra

quando eu restaurar a sua sorte*3.20 Ou eu trouxer de volta os seus cativos.

diante dos seus próprios olhos",

diz o Senhor.
