1. KJV King James Version

   13 Then I saw that wisdom excelleth folly, as far as light excelleth darkness.*2.13 that…: Heb. that there is an excellency in wisdom more than in folly, etc 14 The wise man’s eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all. 15 Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity.*2.15 happeneth even…: Heb. happeneth to me, even to me 16 For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool.

2. NIV New International Version

   13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly,

   just as light is better than darkness.

   14 The wise have eyes in their heads,

   while the fool walks in the darkness;

   but I came to realize

   that the same fate overtakes them both.

   15 Then I said to myself,

   "The fate of the fool will overtake me also.

   What then do I gain by being wise?"

   I said to myself,

   "This too is meaningless."

   16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;

   the days have already come when both have been forgotten.

   Like the fool, the wise too must die!

3. ESV English Standard Version

   13 Then I saw that there is more gain in wisdom than in folly, as there is more gain in light than in darkness. 14 *[Prov. 17:24] The wise person has his eyes in his head, but the fool walks in darkness. And yet I perceived that the *ch. 3:19;9:2,3;Ps. 49:10same event happens to all of them. 15 Then I said in my heart, *[ver. 16; ch. 6:8]"What happens to the fool will happen to me also. Why then have I been so very wise?" And I said in my heart that this also is vanity. 16 For of the wise as of the fool there is *ch. 1:11;See ch. 9:5no enduring remembrance, seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. *See ver. 14How the wise dies just like the fool!

4. NLT New Living Translation

   13 I thought, "Wisdom is better than foolishness, just as light is better than darkness. 14 For the wise can see where they are going, but fools walk in the dark." Yet I saw that the wise and the foolish share the same fate. 15 Both will die. So I said to myself, "Since I will end up the same as the fool, what’s the value of all my wisdom? This is all so meaningless!" 16 For the wise and the foolish both die. The wise will not be remembered any longer than the fool. In the days to come, both will be forgotten.

5. NASB New American Standard Bible 2020

6. CSB Christian Standard Bible

   13 And I realized that there is an advantage to wisdom over folly, like the advantage of light over darkness.  * 2:13 Ec 7:11–12,19; 9:18; 10:10

   14 The wise person has eyes in his head,

   but the fool walks in darkness.  * 2:14 Pr 2:10–13; 1Jn 2:11

   Yet I also knew that one fate comes to them both.  * 2:14 Ps 49:10; Ec 3:19; 6:6; 7:2; 9:2–315 So I said to myself, "What happens to the fool will also happen to me. Why then have I been overly wise? "  * 2:15 Ec 6:8,11; 7:16 And I said to myself that this is also futile. 16 For, just like the fool, there is no lasting remembrance of the wise,  * 2:16 Dt 32:26; 2Sm 18:18; Ec 1:11; 9:5 since in the days to come both will be forgotten. How is it that the wise person dies just like the fool?

7. DRA Douay-Rheims American 1899

   13 And I saw that wisdom excelled folly, as much as light differeth from darkness. 14 The eyes of a wise man are in his head: the fool walketh in darkness: and I learned that they were to die both alike. 15 And I said in my heart: If the death of the fool and mine shall be one, what doth it avail me, that I have applied myself more to the study of wisdom? And speaking with my own mind, I perceived that this also was vanity. 16 For there shall be no remembrance of the wise no more than of the fool for ever, and the times to come shall cover all things together with oblivion: the learned dieth in like manner as the unlearned.

8. MSG The Message

   12-14 And then I took a hard look at what’s smart and what’s stupid. What’s left to do after you’ve been king? That’s a hard act to follow. You just do what you can, and that’s it. But I did see that it’s better to be smart than stupid, just as light is better than darkness. Even so, though the smart ones see where they’re going and the stupid ones grope in the dark, they’re all the same in the end. One fate for all—and that’s it.

   15,16 When I realized that my fate’s the same as the fool’s, I had to ask myself, "So why bother being wise?" It’s all smoke, nothing but smoke. The smart and the stupid both disappear out of sight. In a day or two they’re both forgotten. Yes, both the smart and the stupid die, and that’s it.
