12 But I want you to know, brethren, that the things whichhappened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel, 13 so that it has become evident Phil. 4:22to the whole palace guard, and to all the rest, that my chains are in Christ; 14 and most of the brethren in the Lord, having become confident by my chains, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
12 But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; 13 So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; 14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear.
12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters,1:12 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family; also in verse 14; and in 3:1, 13, 17; 4:1, 8, 21. that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel. 13 As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard1:13 Or whole palace and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ. 14 And because of my chains, most of the brothers and sisters have become confident in the Lord and dare all the more to proclaim the gospel without fear.
12 I want you to know, brothers,1:12 Or brothers and sisters. In New Testament usage, depending on the context, the plural Greek word adelphoi (translated "brothers") may refer either to brothers or to brothers and sisters; also verse 14 that what has happened to me has really ver. 25;1 Tim. 4:15served to advance the gospel, 13 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard1:13 Greek in the whole praetorium and [Acts 28:30,31;2 Tim. 2:9] to all the rest that [Luke 21:13]; See ver. 7my imprisonment is for Christ. 14 And most of the brothers, having become confident in the Lord by my imprisonment, are much more bold [Acts 4:31]to speak the word1:14 Some manuscripts add of God without fear.
12 And I want you to know, my dear brothers and sisters,1:12 Greek brothers. that everything that has happened to me here has helped to spread the Good News. 13 For everyone here, including the whole palace guard,1:13 Greek including all the Praetorium. knows that I am in chains because of Christ. 14 And because of my imprisonment, most of the believers1:14a Greek brothers in the Lord. here have gained confidence and boldly speak God’s message1:14b Some manuscripts read speak the message. without fear.
12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel, 13 so that my 1:13 Lit bondsimprisonment in the cause of Christ has become well known throughout the 1:13 Or governor’s palacepraetorian guard and to everyone else, 14 and that most of the brothers and sisters,1:14 Or in the Lord, trusting because oftrusting in the Lord because of my 1:14 Lit bondsimprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.
12 Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually advanced the gospel, 1:12 Mk 13:9; Ac 21–2613 so that it has become known throughout the whole imperial guard, and to everyone else, that my imprisonment is because I am in Christ. 14 Most of the brothers have gained confidence in the Lord from my imprisonment and dare even more to speak the word 1:14 Other mss add of God, 1:14 Lk 8:21; Jn 18:32; Ac 17:11; Heb 4:12 fearlessly.
12 Now, brethren, I desire you should know, that the things which have happened to me, have fallen out rather to the furtherance of the gospel: 13 So that my bands are made manifest in Christ, in all the court, and in all other places; 14 And many of the brethren in the Lord, growing confident by my bands, are much more bold to speak the word of God without fear.
12-14 I want to report to you, friends, that my imprisonment here has had the opposite of its intended effect. Instead of being squelched, the Message has actually prospered. All the soldiers here, and everyone else, too, found out that I’m in jail because of this Messiah. That piqued their curiosity, and now they’ve learned all about him. Not only that, but most of the followers of Jesus here have become far more sure of themselves in the faith than ever, speaking out fearlessly about God, about the Messiah.
