1. KJV King James Version

3 Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4 Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5 And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6 And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7 And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.

2. NIV New International Version

3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders. 4 "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood."

"What is that to us?" they replied. "That’s your responsibility."

5 So Judas threw the money into the temple and left. Then he went away and hanged himself.

6 The chief priests picked up the coins and said, "It is against the law to put this into the treasury, since it is blood money." 7 So they decided to use the money to buy the potter’s field as a burial place for foreigners.

8. MSG The Message

3,4 Judas, the one who betrayed him, realized that Jesus was doomed. Overcome with remorse, he gave back the thirty silver coins to the high priests, saying, "I’ve sinned. I’ve betrayed an innocent man."

They said, "What do we care? That’s your problem!"

5 Judas threw the silver coins into the Temple and left. Then he went out and hung himself.

6-10 The high priests picked up the silver pieces, but then didn’t know what to do with them. "It wouldn’t be right to give this—a payment for murder!—as an offering in the Temple." They decided to get rid of it by buying the "Potter’s Field" and use it as a burial place for the homeless. That’s how the field got called "Murder Meadow," a name that has stuck to this day. Then Jeremiah’s words became history:

They took the thirty silver pieces,

The price of the one priced by some sons of Israel,

And they purchased the potter’s field.

And so they unwittingly followed the divine instructions to the letter.
