1 Não repreenda um homem mais velho, mas o aconselhe como se ele fosse o seu pai. Trate os homens mais jovens como irmãos, 2 as mulheres idosas, como mães e as mulheres jovens, como irmãs, com toda a pureza.

3 Cuide das viúvas que não tenham ninguém para ajudá-las. 4 Mas, se alguma viúva tem filhos ou netos, são eles que devem primeiro aprender a cumprir os seus deveres religiosos, cuidando da sua própria família. Assim eles pagarão o que receberam dos seus pais e avós, pois Deus gosta disso. 5 A verdadeira viúva, aquela que não tem ninguém para cuidar dela, põe a sua esperança em Deus e ora, de dia e de noite, pedindo a ajuda dele. 6 Porém a viúva que se entrega ao prazer está morta em vida. 7 Timóteo, mande que as viúvas façam o que eu aconselho para que ninguém possa culpá-las de nada. 8 Porém aquele que não cuida dos seus parentes, especialmente dos da sua própria família, negou a fé e é pior do que os que não creem.

9 Coloque na lista das viúvas somente a que tiver mais de sessenta anos e que tiver casado uma vez só. 10 Ela deve ser conhecida como uma mulher que sempre praticou boas ações, criou bem os filhos, hospedou pessoas na sua casa, prestou serviços humildes aos que pertencem ao povo de Deus, ajudou os necessitados, enfim, fez todo tipo de coisas boas.

11 Mas não ponha na lista as viúvas mais jovens; porque, quando os seus desejos fazem com que queiram casar de novo, elas abandonam a Cristo. 12 E assim elas se tornam culpadas de quebrar a primeira promessa que fizeram a ele . 13 Além disso, elas se acostumam a não fazer nada e a andar de casa em casa; e, pior ainda, aprendem a ser mexeriqueiras, metendo-se em tudo e falando coisas que não devem. 14 Por isso, eu quero que as viúvas mais novas casem, tenham filhos e cuidem da sua casa, para que os nossos inimigos não tenham motivos para falar mal de nós. 15 Pois algumas viúvas já se desviaram e seguiram Satanás.

16 Se alguma mulher cristã tem viúvas na sua família, ela deve ajudá-las. Que ela não ponha essa carga sobre a igreja, para que a igreja possa cuidar das viúvas que não tenham ninguém que as ajude!

17 Os presbíteros que fazem um bom trabalho na igreja merecem pagamento em dobro, especialmente os que se esforçam na pregação do evangelho e no ensino cristão. 18 Pois as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Não amarre a boca do boi quando ele estiver pisando o trigo." E dizem ainda: "O trabalhador merece o seu salário." 19 Não aceite nenhuma acusação contra qualquer presbítero, a não ser que ela seja feita por duas testemunhas, pelo menos. 20 Repreenda publicamente os presbíteros que cometem pecados, para que os outros fiquem com medo.

21 Na presença de Deus, de Cristo Jesus e dos santos anjos, eu peço e insisto no seguinte: em tudo o que você fizer, obedeça a estas instruções, sem preconceito contra ninguém e sem favorecer nenhuma pessoa. 22 Não tenha pressa de colocar as mãos sobre alguém para dedicá-lo ao serviço do Senhor. Não tome parte nos pecados dos outros. Conserve-se puro.

23 Já que muitas vezes você tem ficado doente do estômago, não beba somente água, mas beba também um pouco de vinho.

24 Os pecados de algumas pessoas podem ser vistos claramente, antes mesmo de elas serem julgadas. Mas os pecados de outras pessoas só são vistos depois. 25 Assim também as boas ações são vistas claramente e mesmo aquelas que são difíceis de ver não poderão ficar escondidas para sempre.

1 Do not say sharp words to one who has authority in the church, but let your talk be as to a father, and to the younger men as to brothers:2 To the older women as to mothers, to the younger as to sisters, with a clean heart.3 Give honour to widows who are truly widows.4 But if any widow has children or children's children, let these see that it is right to take care of their family and their fathers and mothers: for this is pleasing in the eyes of God.5 Now she who is truly a widow and without family puts her hope in God, giving herself to prayer day and night.6 But she who gives herself to pleasure is dead while she is living.7 Give orders to this effect, so that no evil may be said of anyone.8 If anyone has no care for his family and those in his house, he is false to the faith, and is worse than one who has no faith.9 Let no woman be numbered among the widows who is under sixty years old, and only if she has been the wife of one man,10 And if witness is given of her good works; if she has had the care of children, if she has been kind to travellers, washing the feet of the saints, helping those who are in trouble, giving herself to good works.11 But to the younger widows say No: for when their love is turned away from Christ, they have a desire to be married;12 And they are judged because they have been false to their first faith;13 And they get into the way of doing no work, going about from house to house; and not only doing no work, but talking foolishly, being over-interested in the business of others, saying things which they have no right to say.14 So it is my desire that the younger widows may be married and have children, controlling their families, and giving the Evil One no chance to say anything against them,15 For even now some are turned away to Satan.16 If any woman of the faith has relations who are widows, let her give them help, so that the care of them does not come on the church, and so it may give help to those who are truly widowed.17 Let rulers whose rule is good be honoured twice over, specially those whose work is preaching and teaching.18 For the Writings say, It is not right to keep the ox from taking the grain when he is crushing it. And, The worker has a right to his reward.19 Do not take as true any statement made against one in authority, but only if two or three give witness to it.20 Say sharp words to sinners when all are present, so that the rest may be in fear.21 I give you orders before God and Christ Jesus and the angels of God's selection, to keep these orders without giving thought to one side more than another.22 Do not put hands on any man without thought, and have no part in other men's sins: keep yourself clean.23 Do not take only water as your drink, but take a little wine for the good of your stomach, and because you are frequently ill.24 The sins of some men are clearly seen, going before them to be judged; but with others, their sins go after them.25 In the same way, there are good works which are clearly seen; and those which are not so, may not be kept secret.
