1 Na igreja de Antioquia havia os seguintes profetas e mestres: Barnabé; Simeão, chamado "o Negro"; Lúcio, de Cirene; Manaém, que havia sido criado junto com o governador Herodes ; e Saulo. 2 Certa vez, quando eles estavam adorando o Senhor e jejuando, o Espírito Santo disse:

— Separem para mim Barnabé e Saulo a fim de fazerem o trabalho para o qual eu os tenho chamado.

3 Então eles jejuaram, e oraram, e puseram as mãos sobre Barnabé e Saulo. E os enviaram na sua missão.

4 Barnabé e Saulo, tendo sido enviados pelo Espírito Santo, foram até a cidade de Selêucia e dali embarcaram para a ilha de Chipre. 5 Quando chegaram à cidade de Salamina, começaram a anunciar a palavra de Deus nas sinagogas. E eles tinham João Marcos para ajudá-los no trabalho missionário. 6 Eles atravessaram toda a ilha, chegando até a cidade de Pafos.

Ali encontraram um judeu que era mágico e falso profeta, chamado Barjesus. 7 Ele era amigo de Sérgio Paulo, o governador da ilha, que era um homem muito inteligente. O Governador mandou chamar Barnabé e Saulo, pois queria ouvir a palavra de Deus. 8 Mas o mágico Elimas (este é o nome dele em grego) era contra os apóstolos. Ele não queria que o Governador aceitasse a fé cristã. 9 Então Saulo, também conhecido como Paulo , cheio do Espírito Santo, olhou firmemente para Elimas 10 e disse:

— Filho do Diabo! Inimigo de tudo o que é bom! Homem mau e mentiroso! Por que é que você não para de torcer o verdadeiro ensinamento do Senhor? 11 Agora escute! O Senhor vai castigá-lo. Você ficará cego e não verá a luz do sol por algum tempo.

No mesmo instante Elimas sentiu uma nuvem escura cobrir os seus olhos e ele começou a se virar para todos os lados, procurando alguém que o guiasse pela mão. 12 Quando o Governador viu isso, creu e ficou muito admirado com os ensinamentos a respeito do Senhor Jesus.

13 Paulo e os seus companheiros navegaram da cidade de Pafos até Perge, uma cidade da província da Panfília. Porém João Marcos os deixou e voltou para Jerusalém. 14 Eles continuaram a viagem, indo de Perge até a cidade de Antioquia, no distrito da Pisídia. No sábado entraram na sinagoga e sentaram-se. 15 Depois da leitura da Lei de Moisés e dos livros dos Profetas, os chefes da sinagoga mandaram dizer a eles:

— Irmãos, se vocês têm alguma palavra para animar o povo, podem falar agora.

16 Então Paulo se levantou, fez um sinal com a mão, pedindo silêncio, e começou a dizer:

— Homens de Israel e todos vocês não judeus que temem a Deus, escutem! 17 O Deus do povo de Israel escolheu os nossos antepassados quando moravam na terra do Egito e fez deles um grande povo. Ele os tirou de lá com grande poder 18 e, no deserto, aguentou aquela gente durante quarenta anos. 19 Ele destruiu sete povos na terra de Canaã, e o povo de Israel se tornou dono das terras deles. 20 Tudo isso levou uns quatrocentos e cinquenta anos.

— Depois disso Deus lhes deu juízes, até o tempo de Samuel. 21 Quando o povo pediu um rei, ele lhes deu Saul, filho de Quis, da tribo de Benjamim, para ser rei deles durante quarenta anos. 22 Depois que tirou Saul, Deus pôs Davi como rei e disse isto a respeito dele: "Encontrei em Davi, filho de Jessé, o tipo de pessoa que eu quero e que vai fazer tudo o que eu desejo." 23 Um dos descendentes de Davi foi Jesus, a quem Deus pôs como Salvador de Israel, como havia prometido. 24 Antes da vinda de Jesus, João Batista anunciou a sua mensagem a todo o povo de Israel, dizendo que eles deviam se arrepender e ser batizados. 25 Mas, quando João estava terminando a sua missão, disse ao povo: "Quem é que vocês pensam que eu sou? Eu não sou aquele que vocês estão esperando. Mas escutem! Ele vem depois de mim, porém eu não mereço a honra de tirar as sandálias dos pés dele."

26 Paulo continuou:

— Meus irmãos, descendentes de Abraão, e também vocês não judeus que temem a Deus, escutem! Essa mensagem de salvação foi mandada para todos nós. 27 De fato, os moradores de Jerusalém e os seus líderes não entenderam que Jesus é o Salvador. E também não compreenderam as palavras dos livros dos Profetas, que são lidos todos os sábados. Mesmo assim, ao condenarem Jesus, eles estavam cumprindo essas profecias. 28 E, embora não encontrassem nenhuma razão para condená-lo à morte, pediram a Pilatos que mandasse matá-lo. 29 Depois de fazerem tudo o que as Escrituras Sagradas falam a respeito dele, eles o tiraram da cruz e o puseram num túmulo. 30 Mas Deus o ressuscitou, 31 e durante muitos dias ele apareceu às pessoas que o tinham acompanhado da Galileia até Jerusalém. Agora essas pessoas são testemunhas que falam a respeito de Jesus ao povo de Israel.

32 — E nós estamos aqui para trazer o evangelho a vocês. 33 Deus fez agora para nós o que havia prometido aos nossos antepassados: ele ressuscitou Jesus, como está escrito no Salmo número dois:

"Você é o meu Filho;

hoje eu me tornei o seu Pai."

34 — E foi isto o que Deus disse a respeito da ressurreição de Jesus, afirmando que ele nunca seria destruído pela morte:

"Eu vou dar a vocês as bênçãos

sagradas e certas

que prometi a Davi."

35 E em outra parte das Escrituras lemos também:

"Tu não deixarás que o teu dedicado servo

apodreça na sepultura."

36 E Paulo disse ainda:

— Na verdade, Davi, no seu tempo, cumpriu os planos de Deus. Depois morreu, foi sepultado ao lado dos seus antepassados e apodreceu na sepultura. 37 Mas isso não aconteceu com aquele que Deus ressuscitou. 38,39 Meus irmãos, todos vocês precisam saber com certeza que é por meio de Jesus que a mensagem do perdão de pecados é anunciada a vocês. Precisam saber também que quem crê é libertado de todos os pecados dos quais a Lei de Moisés não pode livrar. 40 Portanto, tenham cuidado para que não aconteça o que os profetas disseram:

41 "Prestem atenção,

vocês que zombam de Deus!

Fiquem espantados e morram.

Pois o que vou fazer agora é uma coisa

em que vocês não acreditariam,

mesmo que alguém explicasse."

42 Quando Paulo e Barnabé estavam saindo da reunião, as pessoas pediram com insistência que eles voltassem no sábado seguinte a fim de falarem sobre o mesmo assunto. 43 Depois da reunião, muitos judeus e outras pessoas convertidas ao Judaísmo acompanharam Paulo e Barnabé, que falavam com eles e animavam todos para que continuassem firmes na graça de Deus.

44 No sábado seguinte quase todos os moradores da cidade foram ouvir a palavra do Senhor. 45 Quando os judeus viram aquela multidão, ficaram com muita inveja. Então começaram a dizer o contrário do que Paulo dizia e o insultaram. 46 Porém Paulo e Barnabé falaram com mais coragem ainda. Eles disseram:

— Era necessário que a palavra de Deus fosse anunciada primeiro a vocês que são judeus. Mas, como vocês não querem aceitá-la e acham que não merecem receber a vida eterna, então agora nós vamos anunciar a palavra aos não judeus. 47 Pois esta é a ordem que o Senhor Deus deu a nós, o seu povo:

"Eu coloquei você como luz

para os outros povos,

a fim de que você leve a salvação

ao mundo inteiro."

48 Quando os não judeus ouviram isso, ficaram muito alegres e começaram a dizer que a palavra do Senhor era boa. E creram todos os que tinham sido escolhidos para ter a vida eterna.

49 A palavra do Senhor se espalhou por toda aquela região. 50 Mas os judeus atiçaram as mulheres não judias da alta sociedade convertidas ao Judaísmo e também os homens mais importantes da cidade. E começaram a perseguir Paulo e Barnabé e os expulsaram daquela região. 51 Então os apóstolos sacudiram a poeira das suas sandálias, em sinal de protesto contra eles, e foram para a cidade de Icônio. 52 E os cristãos de Antioquia continuaram muito alegres e cheios do Espírito Santo.

1 Now there were at Antioch, in the church there, prophets and teachers, Barnabas, and Symeon who was named Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, a relation of Herod the king, and Saul.2 And while they were doing the Lord's work, and going without food, the Holy Spirit said, Let Barnabas and Saul be given to me for the special work for which they have been marked out by me.3 Then, after prayer and going without food they put their hands on them, and sent them away.4 So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia; and from there they went by ship to Cyprus.5 And at Salamis they were preaching the word of God in the Synagogues of the Jews: and John was with them, helping them.6 And when they had gone through all the island to Paphos, they came across a certain wonder-worker and false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus;7 Who was with the ruler, Sergius Paulus, an able man. This man sent for Barnabas and Saul, desiring to have knowledge of the word of God.8 But Elymas, the wonder-worker (for that is the sense of his name), put himself against them, with the purpose of turning the ruler from the faith.9 But Saul, whose other name is Paul, being full of the Holy Spirit, looking hard at him, said,10 O you, who are full of false tricks and evil ways, a son of the Evil One, hating all righteousness, will you for ever be turning people from the right ways of the Lord?11 And now, see, the hand of the Lord is on you, and you will be blind and not able to see the sun for a time. And straight away a dark mist came down on him; and he went about looking for a guide.12 Then the ruler, when he saw what was done, had faith, being full of wonder at the teaching of the Lord.13 Then Paul and those who were with him went by ship from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia: and there John went away from them and came back to Jerusalem.14 But they, going through from Perga, came to Antioch in Pisidia; and they went into the Synagogue on the Sabbath and were seated.15 And after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the Synagogue sent to them, saying, Brothers, if you have a word of comfort for the people, say on.16 And Paul, getting up and making a sign with his hand, said, Men of Israel, and you who have the fear of God, give ear.17 The God of this people Israel made selection of our fathers, lifting the people up from their low condition when they were living in the land of Egypt, and with a strong arm took them out of it.18 And for about forty years he put up with their ways in the waste land.19 And having put to destruction seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them the land for their heritage for about four hundred and fifty years.20 And after these things he gave them judges, till the time of Samuel the prophet.21 Then at their request for a king, God gave them Saul, the son of Kish, a man of the family of Benjamin, who was their king for forty years.22 And having put him on one side, he made David their king, to whom he gave witness, saying, I have taken David, the son of Jesse, a man dear to my heart, who will do all my pleasure.23 From this man's seed has God given to Israel a Saviour, even Jesus, as he gave his word;24 For whose coming John made ready the way by preaching to all the people of Israel the baptism which goes with a change of heart.25 And when John was completing his work, he said, What do I seem to you to be? I am not he; but one is coming after me, whose shoes I am not good enough to undo.26 My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those among you who have the fear of God, to us the word of this salvation is sent.27 For the men of Jerusalem and their rulers, having no knowledge of him, or of the sayings of the prophets which come to their ears every Sabbath day, gave effect to them by judging him.28 And though no cause of death was seen in him, they made a request to Pilate that he might be put to death.29 And when they had done all the things said in the Writings about him, they took him down from the tree, and put him in the place of the dead.30 But God gave him back from the dead:31 And for a number of days he was seen by those who came with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are now his witnesses before the people.32 And we are giving you the good news of the undertaking made to the fathers,33 Which God has now put into effect for our children, by sending Jesus; as it says in the second Psalm, You are my Son; this day I have given you being.34 And about his coming back from the dead, never again to go to destruction, he has said these words, I will give you the holy and certain mercies of David.35 Because he says in another Psalm, You will not let your Holy One see destruction.36 Now David, having done God's work for his generation, went to sleep, and was put with his fathers, and his body came to destruction:37 But he, who was lifted up by God, did not see destruction.38 And so, let it be clear to you, my brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is offered to you:39 And through him everyone who has faith is made free from all those things, from which the law of Moses was not able to make you free.40 So take care that these words of the prophets do not come true for you;41 See, you doubters, have wonder and come to your end; for I will do a thing in your days to which you will not give belief, even if it is made clear to you.42 And when they went out, they made a request that these words might be said to them again on the Sabbath after.43 Now when the meeting was ended, a number of the Jews and of the God-fearing Gentiles who had become Jews, went after Paul and Barnabas: who put before them how important it was to keep on in the grace of God.44 And on the Sabbath after, almost all the town came together to give hearing to the word of God.45 But when the Jews saw such a great number of people, they were full of envy and said evil words against Paul's preaching.46 Then Paul and Barnabas without fear said, It was necessary for the word of God to be given to you first; but because you will have nothing to do with it, and have no desire for eternal life, it will now be offered to the Gentiles.47 For so the Lord has given us orders, saying, I have given you for a light to the Gentiles so that you may be for salvation to the ends of the earth.48 And the Gentiles, hearing this, were glad and gave glory to the word of God: and those marked out by God for eternal life had faith.49 And the word of the Lord went through all the country.50 But the Jews, working up the feelings of the God-fearing women of high position and of the chief men of the town, got an attack started against Paul and Barnabas, driving them out of those parts.51 But they, shaking off the dust of that place from their feet, came to Iconium.52 And the disciples were full of joy and of the Holy Spirit.
