1 No começo aquele que é a Palavra já existia. Ele estava com Deus e era Deus. 2 Desde o princípio, a Palavra estava com Deus. 3 Por meio da Palavra, Deus fez todas as coisas, e nada do que existe foi feito sem ela. 4 A Palavra era a fonte da vida, e essa vida trouxe a luz para todas as pessoas. 5 A luz brilha na escuridão, e a escuridão não conseguiu apagá-la.

6 Houve um homem chamado João, que foi enviado por Deus 7 para falar a respeito da luz. Ele veio para que por meio dele todos pudessem ouvir a mensagem e crer nela. 8 João não era a luz, mas veio para falar a respeito da luz, 9 a luz verdadeira que veio ao mundo e ilumina todas as pessoas.

10 A Palavra estava no mundo, e por meio dela Deus fez o mundo, mas o mundo não a conheceu. 11 Aquele que é a Palavra veio para o seu próprio país, mas o seu povo não o recebeu. 12 Porém alguns creram nele e o receberam, e a estes ele deu o direito de se tornarem filhos de Deus. 13 Eles não se tornaram filhos de Deus pelos meios naturais, isto é, não nasceram como nascem os filhos de um pai humano; o próprio Deus é quem foi o Pai deles.

14 A Palavra se tornou um ser humano e morou entre nós, cheia de amor e de verdade. E nós vimos a revelação da sua natureza divina, natureza que ele recebeu como Filho único do Pai.

15 João disse o seguinte a respeito de Jesus:

— Este é aquele de quem eu disse: "Ele vem depois de mim, mas é mais importante do que eu, pois antes de eu nascer ele já existia."

16 Porque todos nós temos sido abençoados com as riquezas do seu amor, com bênçãos e mais bênçãos. 17 A lei foi dada por meio de Moisés, mas o amor e a verdade vieram por meio de Jesus Cristo. 18 Ninguém nunca viu Deus. Somente o Filho único, que é Deus e está ao lado do Pai, foi quem nos mostrou quem é Deus.

19 Os líderes judeus enviaram de Jerusalém alguns sacerdotes e levitas para perguntarem a João quem ele era. 20 João afirmou claramente:

— Eu não sou o Messias.

21 Eles tornaram a perguntar:

— Então, quem é você? Você é Elias?

— Não, eu não sou! — respondeu João.

— Você é o Profeta que estamos esperando?

— Não! — respondeu ele.

22 Aí eles disseram a João:

— Diga quem é você para podermos levar uma resposta aos que nos enviaram. O que é que você diz a respeito de você mesmo?

23 João respondeu, citando o profeta Isaías:

— "Eu sou aquele que grita assim no deserto: preparem o caminho para o Senhor passar."

24 Os que foram enviados eram do grupo dos fariseus; 25 eles perguntaram a João:

— Se você não é o Messias, nem Elias, nem o Profeta que estamos esperando, por que é que você batiza?

26 João respondeu:

— Eu batizo com água, mas no meio de vocês está alguém que vocês não conhecem. 27 Ele vem depois de mim, mas eu não mereço a honra de desamarrar as correias das sandálias dele.

28 Isso aconteceu no povoado de Betânia, no lado leste do rio Jordão, onde João estava batizando.

29 No dia seguinte, João viu Jesus vindo na direção dele e disse:

— Aí está o Cordeiro de Deus, que tira o pecado do mundo! 30 Eu estava falando a respeito dele quando disse: "Depois de mim vem um homem que é mais importante do que eu, pois antes de eu nascer ele já existia." 31 Eu mesmo não sabia quem ele era, mas vim, batizando com água para que o povo de Israel saiba quem ele é.

32 João continuou:

— Eu vi o Espírito descer do céu como uma pomba e parar sobre ele. 33 Eu não sabia quem ele era, mas Deus, que me mandou batizar com água, me disse: "Você vai ver o Espírito descer e parar sobre um homem. Esse é quem batiza com o Espírito Santo." 34 E eu vi isso e por esse motivo tenho declarado que ele é o Filho de Deus.

35 No dia seguinte, João estava outra vez ali com dois dos seus discípulos. 36 Quando viu Jesus passar, disse:

— Aí está o Cordeiro de Deus!

37 Quando os dois discípulos de João ouviram isso, saíram seguindo Jesus. 38 Então Jesus olhou para trás, viu que eles o seguiam e perguntou:

— O que é que vocês estão procurando?

Eles perguntaram:

— Rabi, onde é que o senhor mora? ("Rabi" quer dizer "mestre".)

39 — Venham ver! — disse Jesus.

Então eles foram, viram onde Jesus estava morando e ficaram com ele o resto daquele dia. Isso aconteceu mais ou menos às quatro horas da tarde.

40 André, irmão de Simão Pedro, era um dos dois homens que tinham ouvido João falar a respeito de Jesus e por isso o haviam seguido. 41 A primeira coisa que André fez foi procurar o seu irmão Simão e dizer a ele:

— Achamos o Messias. ("Messias" quer dizer "Cristo".)

42 Então André levou o seu irmão a Jesus. Jesus olhou para Simão e disse:

— Você é Simão, filho de João, mas de agora em diante o seu nome será Cefas. ("Cefas" é o mesmo que "Pedro" e quer dizer "pedra".)

43 No dia seguinte, Jesus resolveu ir para a região da Galileia. Antes de ir, foi procurar Filipe e disse:

— Venha comigo!

44 Filipe era de Betsaida, de onde eram também André e Pedro. 45 Filipe foi procurar Natanael e disse:

— Achamos aquele a respeito de quem Moisés escreveu no Livro da Lei e sobre quem os profetas também escreveram. É Jesus, filho de José, da cidade de Nazaré.

46 Natanael perguntou:

— E será que pode sair alguma coisa boa de Nazaré?

— Venha ver! — respondeu Filipe.

47 Quando Jesus viu Natanael chegando, disse a respeito dele:

— Aí está um verdadeiro israelita, um homem realmente sincero.

48 Então Natanael perguntou a Jesus:

— De onde o senhor me conhece?

Jesus respondeu:

— Antes que Filipe chamasse você, eu já tinha visto você sentado debaixo daquela figueira.

49 Então Natanael exclamou:

— Mestre, o senhor é o Filho de Deus! O senhor é o Rei de Israel!

50 Jesus respondeu:

— Você crê em mim só porque eu disse que tinha visto você debaixo da figueira? Pois você verá coisas maiores do que esta. 51 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: vocês verão o céu aberto e os anjos de Deus subindo e descendo sobre o Filho do Homem.

1 From the first he was the Word, and the Word was in relation with God and was God.2 This Word was from the first in relation with God.3 All things came into existence through him, and without him nothing was.4 What came into existence in him was life, and the life was the light of men.5 And the light goes on shining in the dark; it is not overcome by the dark.6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.7 He came for witness, to give witness about the light, so that all men might have faith through him.8 He himself was not the light: he was sent to give witness about the light.9 The true light, which gives light to every man, was then coming into the world.10 He was in the world, the world which came into being through him, but the world had no knowledge of him.11 He came to the things which were his and his people did not take him to their hearts.12 To all those who did so take him, however, he gave the right of becoming children of God--that is, to those who had faith in his name:13 Whose birth was from God and not from blood, or from an impulse of the flesh and man's desire.14 And so the Word became flesh and took a place among us for a time; and we saw his glory--such glory as is given to an only son by his father--saw it to be true and full of grace.15 John gave witness about him, crying, This is he of whom I said, He who is coming after me is put over me because he was in existence before me.16 From his full measure we have all been given grace on grace.17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and the true way of life are ours through Jesus Christ.18 No man has seen God at any time; the only Son, who is on the breast of the Father, he has made clear what God is.19 And this is the witness of John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to him with the question, Who are you?20 He said quite openly and straightforwardly, I am not the Christ.21 And they said to him, What then? Are you Elijah? And he said, I am not. Are you the prophet? And his answer was, I am not.22 So they said to him, Who are you then? We have to give some answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?23 He said, I am the voice of one crying in the waste land, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet.24 Those who had been sent came from the Pharisees.25 And they put this question to him, saying, Why then are you giving baptism if you are not the Christ, or Elijah, or the prophet?26 John's answer was: I give baptism with water; but there is one among you of whom you have no knowledge;27 It is he who is coming after me; I am not good enough to undo his shoes.28 These things took place at Bethany on the other side of the Jordan, where John was giving baptism.29 The day after, John sees Jesus coming to him and says, See, here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!30 This is he of whom I said, One is coming after me who is put over me because he was in existence before me.31 I myself had no knowledge of him, but I came giving baptism with water so that he might be seen openly by Israel.32 And John gave this witness, saying, I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove and resting on him.33 I had no knowledge who he was, but he who sent me to give baptism with water said to me, The one on whom you see the Spirit coming down and resting, it is he who gives baptism with the Holy Spirit.34 This I saw myself and my witness is that he is the Son of God.35 The day after, John was there again with two of his disciples;36 And looking at Jesus while he was walking he said, See, there is the Lamb of God!37 Hearing what he said, the two disciples went after Jesus.38 And Jesus, turning round, saw them coming after him and said to them, What are you looking for? They said to him, Rabbi (which is to say, Master), where are you living?39 +40 He said to them, Come and see. They went with him then and saw where he was living; and they were with him all that day: it was then about the tenth hour of the day.41 Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, was one of the two men who, hearing what John said, went after Jesus.42 Early in the morning he came across his brother and said to him, We have made discovery! It is the Messiah! (which is to say, the Christ).43 And he took him to Jesus. Looking at him fixedly Jesus said, You are Simon, the son of John; your name will be Cephas (which is to say, Peter).44 The day after this, Jesus had a desire to go into Galilee. He came across Philip and said to him, Come and be my disciple.45 Now Philip's town was Beth-saida, where Andrew and Peter came from.46 Philip came across Nathanael and said to him, We have made a discovery! It is he of whom Moses, in the law, and the prophets were writing, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.47 Nazareth! said Nathanael, Is it possible for any good to come out of Nazareth? Philip said to him, Come and see.48 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him and said of him, See, here is a true son of Israel in whom there is nothing false.49 Nathanael said to him, Where did you get knowledge of me? In answer Jesus said, Before Philip was talking with you, while you were still under the fig-tree, I saw you.50 Nathanael said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son of God, you are King of Israel!51 In answer Jesus said to him, You have faith because I said to you, I saw you under the fig-tree. You will see greater things than these.52 And he said to him, Truly I say to you all, You will see heaven opening and God's angels going up and coming down on the Son of man.
