1 Algum tempo depois, no terceiro ano da seca, o Senhor Deus disse a Elias:

— Vá apresentar-se ao rei Acabe, pois eu vou mandar chover.

2 Então Elias saiu para se apresentar a Acabe.

A falta de alimentos era muito grande em Samaria, 3 e por isso Acabe mandou chamar Obadias, o administrador do palácio. (Obadias era um fiel adorador do Senhor Deus 4 e, quando Jezabel estava matando os profetas do Senhor, Obadias escondeu cem profetas em dois grupos de cinquenta em cavernas e providenciou comida e água para eles.) 5 Acabe disse a Obadias:

— Vamos dar uma olhada em todas as fontes e em todos os leitos dos riachos da nossa terra a fim de ver se achamos capim suficiente para conservar vivos os cavalos e as mulas. Pois pode ser que a gente não tenha de matar os nossos animais.

6 Eles combinaram que parte da região cada um devia examinar e saíram, cada um para o seu lado.

7 Obadias estava no caminho quando, de repente, se encontrou com Elias. Ele reconheceu Elias e se ajoelhou diante dele, encostou o rosto no chão e perguntou:

— É o senhor mesmo? É o meu senhor Elias?

8 — Sim, eu sou Elias! — respondeu o profeta. — Vá dizer ao seu patrão, o rei, que eu estou aqui.

9 Mas Obadias disse:

— O que foi que eu fiz para o senhor querer me pôr em perigo de ser morto pelo rei Acabe? 10 Juro pelo seu Deus vivo, o Senhor, que o rei mandou procurá-lo em todos os países da terra. Sempre que um rei mandava dizer que o senhor não estava no país dele, Acabe pedia a esse rei que jurasse que não havia sido possível encontrá-lo. 11 E agora o senhor quer que eu vá lhe dizer que está aqui? 12 Pode ser que logo que eu sair daqui o Espírito do Senhor o leve para algum lugar desconhecido. Aí, quando eu contar a Acabe que o senhor está aqui, e ele não puder encontrá-lo, ele me matará. Lembre que desde menino eu tenho sido um fiel adorador de Deus, o Senhor. 13 Por acaso, não lhe contaram que, quando Jezabel estava matando os profetas de Deus, eu escondi cem deles em cavernas, em dois grupos de cinquenta, e providenciei comida e água para eles? 14 Como é então que agora o senhor está me mandando ir dizer ao rei que o senhor está aqui? Ele vai me matar!

15 Elias respondeu:

— Pelo Senhor Todo-Poderoso, a quem sirvo, eu prometo que hoje vou me apresentar ao rei.

16 Então Obadias foi encontrar-se com Acabe e lhe contou o que havia acontecido. Aí Acabe saiu para se encontrar com Elias. 17 Quando viu o profeta, Acabe disse:

— Então é você que está aí, você, o maior criador de problemas de Israel!

18 — Eu não sou criador de problemas para o povo de Israel! — respondeu Elias. — Você e o seu pai é que são criadores de problemas, pois abandonaram os mandamentos do Senhor Deus e adoraram as imagens de Baal. 19 Portanto, ordene agora a todo o povo de Israel que vá encontrar-se comigo no monte Carmelo. Mande também os quatrocentos e cinquenta profetas do deus Baal e os quatrocentos profetas da deusa Aserá que são sustentados pela rainha Jezabel.

20 Então Acabe chamou todos os israelitas e os profetas de Baal para se reunirem no monte Carmelo. 21 Elias chegou perto do povo e disse:

— Até quando vocês vão ficar em dúvida sobre o que vão fazer? Se o Senhor é Deus, adorem o Senhor; mas, se Baal é Deus, adorem Baal!

Porém o povo não respondeu nada. 22 Então Elias disse:

— De todos os profetas de Deus, o Senhor, eu fui o único que sobrou, mas os profetas de Baal são quatrocentos e cinquenta. 23 Agora tragam dois touros. Que os profetas de Baal matem um deles, cortem em pedaços e ponham em cima da lenha, mas não ponham fogo! Eu farei a mesma coisa com o outro touro. 24 E aí os profetas de Baal vão orar ao seu deus, e eu orarei ao Senhor. O deus que responder mandando fogo, este é que é Deus.

E todo o povo respondeu:

— Está bem assim!

25 Então Elias disse aos profetas de Baal:

— Já que vocês são tantos, peguem o touro e o preparem primeiro. Orem ao seu deus, porém não ponham fogo na lenha.

26 Os profetas de Baal pegaram o touro que havia sido trazido para eles, e o prepararam, e oraram a Baal desde a manhã até o meio-dia. Eles gritavam assim:

— Ó Baal, responde às nossas orações!

E ficaram dançando em volta do altar que haviam feito, porém não houve resposta.

27 Ao meio-dia, Elias começou a caçoar deles. Ele dizia:

— Orem mais alto, pois ele é deus! Pode ser que esteja meditando ou que tenha ido ao banheiro. Talvez ele tenha viajado ou talvez esteja dormindo, e vocês terão de acordá-lo!

28 Aí os profetas oraram mais alto e começaram a se cortar com facas e punhais, conforme o costume deles, até que o sangue começou a correr. 29 Passou o meio-dia, e eles continuaram a orar e a gritar até a hora do sacrifício da tarde; porém não se ouviu nenhum som.

30 Então Elias disse ao povo:

— Cheguem para mais perto de mim.

Todos chegaram mais perto de Elias, e ele começou a consertar o altar do Senhor Deus, que estava derrubado. 31 Ele pegou doze pedras, uma para cada uma das doze tribos que tinham os nomes dos filhos de Jacó, o homem a quem o Senhor tinha dado o nome de Israel. 32 Com essas pedras Elias reconstruiu o altar para a adoração do Senhor. Depois cavou em volta uma valeta em que cabiam mais ou menos doze litros de água. 33 Em seguida colocou lenha no altar, cortou o touro em pedaços e os pôs em cima da lenha. 34 Então disse:

— Encham quatro jarras com água e derramem sobre o animal sacrificado e sobre a lenha.

Eles fizeram o que Elias estava mandando, e ele disse:

— Façam de novo.

E eles fizeram.

— Façam pela terceira vez! — disse Elias.

E eles fizeram. 35 A água correu em volta do altar e encheu a valeta.

36 Quando chegou a hora do sacrifício da tarde, o profeta Elias chegou perto do altar e orou assim:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Abraão, de Isaque e de Jacó! Prova agora que és o Deus de Israel, e que eu sou teu servo, e que fiz tudo isto de acordo com a tua ordem. 37 Responde-me, ó Senhor, responde-me, para que este povo saiba que tu, o Senhor, és Deus e estás trazendo este povo de volta para ti!

38 Então o Senhor mandou fogo. E o fogo queimou o sacrifício, a lenha, as pedras, a terra e ainda secou a água que estava na valeta. 39 Quando viram isso, os israelitas se ajoelharam, encostaram o rosto no chão e gritaram:

— O Senhor é Deus! Só o Senhor é Deus!

40 Elias ordenou:

— Prendam os profetas de Baal! Não deixem escapar nenhum!

Todos foram presos, e Elias fez com que descessem até o riacho de Quisom e ali os matou.

41 Então Elias disse ao rei Acabe:

— Agora vá comer, pois eu já estou ouvindo o barulho de muita chuva.

42 Enquanto Acabe foi comer, Elias subiu até o alto do monte Carmelo. Ali ele se inclinou até o chão, pôs a cabeça entre os joelhos 43 e disse ao seu ajudante:

— Vá e olhe para o lado do mar.

O ajudante foi e voltou dizendo:

— Não vi nada.

Sete vezes Elias mandou que ele fosse olhar. 44 Na sétima vez, ele voltou e disse:

— Eu vi subindo do mar uma nuvem pequena, do tamanho da mão de um homem.

Então Elias mandou:

— Vá aonde está o rei Acabe e lhe diga que apronte o carro e volte para casa; se não, a chuva não vai deixar.

45 Em pouco tempo o céu se cobriu de nuvens escuras, o vento começou a soprar, e uma chuva pesada começou a cair. Acabe entrou no seu carro e partiu de volta para Jezreel. 46 O poder do Senhor Deus veio sobre Elias; ele apertou o seu cinto e correu na frente de Acabe todo o caminho até Jezreel.

1 AND it came to pass that Jesus commanded his Disciples that they should bring forth some bread and wine unto him.2 And while they were gone for bread and wine, he commanded the multitude that they should sit themselves down upon the earth.3 And when the Disciples had come with bread and wine, he took of the bread and brake and blessed it; and he gave unto the Disciples and commanded that they should eat.4 And when they had eaten and were filled, he commanded that they should give unto the multitude.5 And when the multitude had eaten and were filled, he said unto the Disciples: Behold there shall one be ordained among you, and to him will I give power that he shall break bread and bless it and give it unto the people of my church, unto all those who shall believe and be baptized in my name.6 And this shall ye always observe to do, even as I have done, even as I have broken bread and blessed it and given it unto you.7 And this shall ye do in remembrance of my body, which I have shown unto you. And it shall be a testimony unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.8 And it came to pass that when he said these words, he commanded his Disciples that they should take of the wine of the cup and drink of it, and that they should also give unto the multitude that they might drink of it.9 And it came to pass that they did so, and did drink of it and were filled; and they gave unto the multitude, and they did drink, and they were filled.10 And when the Disciples had done this, Jesus said unto them: Blessed are ye for this thing which ye have done, for this is fulfilling my commandments, and this doth witness unto the Father that ye are willing to do that which I have commanded you.11 And this shall ye always do to those who repent and are baptized in my name; and ye shall do it in remembrance of my blood, which I have shed for you, that ye may witness unto the Father that ye do always remember me. And if ye do always remember me ye shall have my Spirit to be with you.12 And I give unto you a commandment that ye shall do these things. And if ye shall always do these things blessed are ye, for ye are built upon my rock.13 But whoso among you shall do more or less than these are not built upon my rock, but are built upon a sandy foundation; and when the rain descends, and the floods come, and the winds blow, and beat upon them, they shall fall, and the gates of hell are ready open to receive them.14 Therefore blessed are ye if ye shall keep my commandments, which the Father hath commanded me that I should give unto you.15 Verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him.16 And as I have prayed among you even so shall ye pray in my church, among my people who do repent and are baptized in my name. Behold I am the light; I have set an example for you.17 And it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words unto his Disciples, he turned again unto the multitude and said unto them:18 Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, ye must watch and pray always lest ye enter into temptation; for Satan desireth to have you, that he may sift you as wheat.19 Therefore ye must always pray unto the Father in my name;20 And whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, which is right, believing that ye shall receive, behold it shall be given unto you.21 Pray in your families unto the Father, always in my name, that your wives and your children may be blessed.22 And behold, ye shall meet together oft; and ye shall not forbid any man from coming unto you when ye shall meet together, but suffer them that they may come unto you and forbid them not;23 But ye shall pray for them, and shall not cast them out; and if it so be that they come unto you oft ye shall pray for them unto the Father, in my name.24 Therefore, hold up your light that it may shine unto the world. Behold I am the light which ye shall hold up-that which ye have seen me do. Behold ye see that I have prayed unto the Father, and ye all have witnessed.25 And ye see that I have commanded that none of you should go away, but rather have commanded that ye should come unto me, that ye might feel and see; even so shall ye do unto the world; and whosoever breaketh this commandment suffereth himself to be led into temptation.26 And now it came to pass that when Jesus had spoken these words, he turned his eyes again upon the Disciples whom he had chosen, and said unto them:27 Behold verily, verily, I say unto you, I give unto you another commandment, and then I must go unto my Father that I may fulfil other commandments which he hath given me.28 And now behold, this is the commandment which I give unto you, that ye shall not suffer any one knowingly to partake of my flesh and blood unworthily, when ye shall minister it;29 For whoso eateth and drinketh my flesh and blood unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to his soul; therefore if ye know that a man is unworthy to eat and drink of my flesh and blood ye shall forbid him.30 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out from among you, but ye shall minister unto him and shall pray for him unto the Father, in my name; and if it so be that he repenteth and is baptized in my name, then shall ye receive him, and shall minister unto him of my flesh and blood.31 But if he repent not he shall not be numbered among my people, that he may not destroy my people, for behold I know my sheep, and they are numbered.32 Nevertheless, ye shall not cast him out of your synagogues, or your places of worship, for unto such shall ye continue to minister; for ye know not but what they will return and repent, and come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I shall heal them; and ye shall be the means of bringing salvation unto them.33 Therefore, keep these sayings which I have commanded you that ye come not under condemnation; for wo unto him whom the Father condemneth.34 And I give you these commandments because of the disputations which have been among you. And blessed are ye if ye have no disputations among you.35 And now I go unto the Father, because it is expedient that I should go unto the Father for your sakes.36 And it came to pass that when Jesus had made an end of these sayings, he touched with his hand the Disciples whom he had chosen, one by one, even until he had touched them all, and spake unto them as he touched them.37 And the multitude heard not the words which he spake, therefore they did not bear record; but the Disciples bare record that he gave them power to give the Holy Ghost. And I will show unto you hereafter that this record is true.38 And it came to pass that when Jesus had touched them all, there came a cloud and overshadowed the multitude that they could not see Jesus.39 And while they were overshadowed he departed from them, and ascended into heaven. And the Disciples saw and did bear record that he ascended again into heaven.
