1 O Anjo do Senhor foi de Gilgal a Boquim e disse aos israelitas:

— Eu tirei vocês da terra do Egito e os trouxe à terra que havia prometido aos seus pais. Eu disse: "Nunca quebrarei a aliança que fiz com vocês. 2 Não façam nenhum acordo com os moradores desta terra. Pelo contrário, derrubem os altares deles." Mas vocês não fizeram o que eu disse. Em vez disso, vejam o que fizeram! 3 Agora eu digo que não tirarei este povo do caminho de vocês. Eles serão seus inimigos, e os deuses deles vão ser tentações para vocês.

4 Quando o Anjo terminou de falar, todo o povo de Israel começou a chorar. 5 Por isso aquele lugar é chamado de Boquim . E ali eles ofereceram sacrifícios a Deus, o Senhor.

6 Josué mandou embora todo o povo de Israel, e cada homem foi tomar conta do seu pedaço de terra. 7 O povo de Israel serviu a Deus, o Senhor, enquanto Josué viveu. Depois que ele morreu, eles ainda continuaram a servir o Senhor enquanto viveram os líderes que tinham visto tudo o que o Senhor havia feito por Israel.

8 Josué, filho de Num, servo do Senhor, morreu com a idade de cento e dez anos. 9 Ele foi sepultado no seu próprio pedaço de terra, em Timnate-Heres, na região montanhosa de Efraim, ao norte do monte Gaás. 10 Todas as pessoas daquela geração também morreram e os seus filhos esqueceram o Senhor e as coisas que ele havia feito pelo povo de Israel.

11 Então o povo de Israel pecou contra Deus, o Senhor, adorando os deuses dos cananeus. 12 Eles deixaram de adorar o Senhor, o Deus dos seus antepassados, que os havia tirado do Egito. Começaram a seguir outros deuses, os deuses dos povos que viviam ao seu redor. Eles adoraram esses deuses e assim fizeram o Senhor ficar muito irado. 13 Abandonaram a Deus, o Senhor, e adoraram Baal e Astarote. 14 O Senhor ficou muito irado com o povo de Israel e deixou que eles fossem atacados e roubados por povos vizinhos. Ele entregou os israelitas nas mãos dos inimigos que viviam ao redor, e por isso eles não puderam mais resistir. 15 Sempre que saíam para lutar, o Senhor ficava contra eles, como tinha dito. Assim eles ficaram numa situação muito difícil.

16 Então o Senhor Deus deu ao povo de Israel líderes fortes, chamados juízes, que os salvaram dos que os atacavam e roubavam. 17 Mas eles não deram atenção a esses líderes. Continuaram a desprezar a Deus e a adorar outros deuses. Os pais deles haviam obedecido aos mandamentos do Senhor, mas eles não obedeceram. 18 O Senhor lhes dava um líder e o ajudava. Enquanto esse líder vivia, o Senhor salvava o povo dos seus inimigos. Ele tinha pena dos israelitas porque eles sofriam na escravidão. 19 Mas, quando o líder morria, eles voltavam a viver como antes e se tornavam ainda piores do que os seus pais. Iam atrás de outros deuses, e os serviam, e adoravam. Teimavam em continuar nos seus maus caminhos. 20 Por isso o Senhor Deus ficou muito irado com o povo de Israel e disse:

— Esta nação quebrou a aliança que eu mandei que os seus antepassados guardassem. E, porque eles não me têm obedecido, 21 não expulsarei mais desta terra nenhuma das nações que Josué deixou quando morreu. 22 Assim verei se os israelitas seguirão fielmente os meus caminhos, como os seus antepassados seguiram.

23 Assim o Senhor não expulsou logo da terra as nações que ele não tinha entregado a Josué, mas deixou que ficassem ali.

1 And the angel of the LORD came up from Gilgal to Bochim. And he said, I made you to go up out of Egypt, and have brought you unto the land which I sware unto your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant with you: 2 and ye shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; ye shall break down their altars: but ye have not hearkened unto my voice: why have ye done this? 3 Wherefore I also said, I will not drive them out from before you; but they shall be as thorns in your sides, and their gods shall be a snare unto you. 4 And it came to pass, when the angel of the LORD spake these words unto all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept. 5 And they called the name of that place Bochim: and they sacrificed there unto the LORD. 6 Now when Joshua had sent the people away, the children of Israel went every man unto his inheritance to possess the land. 7 And the people served the LORD all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the LORD, that he had wrought for Israel. 8 And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten years old. 9 And they buried him in the border of his inheritance in Timnath-heres, in the hill country of Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaash. 10 And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the LORD, nor yet the work which he had wrought for Israel. 11 And the children of Israel did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baalim: 12 and they forsook the LORD, the God of their fathers, which brought them out of the land of Egypt, and followed other gods, of the gods of the peoples that were round about them, and bowed themselves down unto them: and they provoked the LORD to anger. 13 And they forsook the LORD, and served Baal and the Ashtaroth. 14 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he delivered them into the hands of spoilers that spoiled them, and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, so that they could not any longer stand before their enemies. 15 Whithersoever they went out, the hand of the LORD was against them for evil, as the LORD had spoken, and as the LORD had sworn unto them: and they were sore distressed. 16 And the LORD raised up judges, which saved them out of the hand of those that spoiled them. 17 And yet they hearkened not unto their judges, for they went a whoring after other gods, and bowed themselves down unto them: they turned aside quickly out of the way wherein their fathers walked, obeying the commandments of the LORD; but they did not so. 18 And when the LORD raised them up judges, then the LORD was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge: for it repented the LORD because of their groaning by reason of them that oppressed them and vexed them. 19 But it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they turned back, and dealt more corruptly than their fathers, in following other gods to serve them, and to bow down unto them; they ceased not from their doings, nor from their stubborn way. 20 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel; and he said, Because this nation have transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice; 21 I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which Joshua left when he died: 22 that by them I may prove Israel, whether they will keep the way of the LORD to walk therein, as their fathers did keep it, or not. 23 So the LORD left those nations, without driving them out hastily; neither delivered he them into the hand of Joshua.
