1 O rei Davi consultou todos os oficiais que comandavam grupos de mil homens e grupos de cem. 2 Depois anunciou a todo o povo de Israel o seguinte:

— Se vocês acharem bom, e se isso for da vontade do Senhor, nosso Deus, vamos mandar mensageiros ao resto dos nossos irmãos israelitas e aos sacerdotes e levitas nas suas cidades, para dizerem a eles que venham se reunir aqui com a gente. 3 Aí nós iremos buscar a arca da aliança, pois ela ficou esquecida durante o reinado de Saul.

4 Essa proposta agradou ao povo, e todos concordaram com ela.

5 Então Davi reuniu todo o povo de Israel, desde a fronteira do Egito, no Sul, até a subida de Hamate, no Norte, a fim de levarem a arca da aliança de Quiriate-Jearim para Jerusalém. 6 Davi e o povo foram até a cidade de Baalá, isto é, Quiriate-Jearim, no território da tribo de Judá, para tirar dali a arca da aliança de Deus, a qual tem o nome do Senhor, que se assenta no seu trono, acima dos querubins. 7 Colocaram a arca num carro de bois, novo, e a levaram embora da casa de Abinadabe. Uzá e Aiô guiavam o carro. 8 Então Davi e todo o povo começaram a dançar com todas as suas forças em louvor a Deus. Eles cantavam e tocavam instrumentos musicais, isto é, harpas, liras, tambores, pratos e trombetas.

9 Quando chegaram ao campo de debulhar cereais que pertencia a Quidom, os bois tropeçaram. Então Uzá estendeu a mão e segurou a arca da aliança. 10 Na mesma hora, o Senhor ficou irado por Uzá ter tocado na arca e o matou. Ele morreu ali, na presença de Deus. 11 Davi ficou furioso porque Deus, na sua ira, havia castigado Uzá; assim até hoje aquele lugar é chamado de Peres-Uzá .

12 Então Davi ficou com medo de Deus e disse:

— E agora como poderei levar comigo a arca da aliança?

13 Assim Davi não levou a arca consigo para a Cidade de Davi. Em vez disso, ele a deixou na casa de um homem chamado Obede-Edom, que era da cidade de Gate. 14 A arca ficou ali três meses, e Deus abençoou a família de Obede-Edom e tudo o que era dele.

1 And David consulted with the captains of thousands and hundreds, and with every leader.2 And David said unto all the congregation of Israel, If it seems good unto you, and that it is of the LORD our God, let us send out unto our brethren everywhere, that are left in all the land of Israel, and with them also to the priests and Levites who are in their cities and pasture lands, that they may gather themselves unto us:3 And let us bring again the ark of our God to us: for we have not inquired at it in the days of Saul.4 And all the congregation said that they would do so: for the thing was right in the eyes of all the people.5 So David gathered all Israel together, from Shihor of Egypt even unto the entrance of Hamath, to bring the ark of God from Kiriath-jearim.6 And David went up, and all Israel, to Baalah, that is, to Kiriath-jearim, which belonged to Judah, to bring up from there the ark of God the LORD, who dwells between the cherubim, whose name is proclaimed there.7 And they carried the ark of God in a new cart out of the house of Abinadab: and Uzzah and Ahio drove the cart.8 And David and all Israel played before God with all their might, and with singing, and with harps, and with lyres, and with tambourines, and with cymbals, and with trumpets.9 And when they came unto the threshingfloor of Chidon, Uzzah put forth his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled.10 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and he struck him, because he put his hand to the ark: and there he died before God.11 And David was displeased, because the LORD had broken forth upon Uzzah: therefore that place is called Perez-uzza to this day.12 And David was afraid of God that day, saying, How shall I bring the ark of God home to me?13 So David brought not the ark home to himself to the city of David, but carried it aside into the house of Obed-edom the Gittite.14 And the ark of God remained with the family of Obed-edom in his house three months. And the LORD blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that he had.
