1 Faltava somente um dia para a Festa da Páscoa. Jesus sabia que tinha chegado a hora de deixar este mundo e ir para o Pai. Ele sempre havia amado os seus que estavam neste mundo e os amou até o fim.

2 Jesus e os seus discípulos estavam jantando. O Diabo já havia posto na cabeça de Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes, a ideia de trair Jesus. 3 Jesus sabia que o Pai lhe tinha dado todo o poder. E sabia também que tinha vindo de Deus e ia para Deus. 4 Então se levantou, tirou a sua capa, pegou uma toalha e amarrou na cintura. 5 Em seguida pôs água numa bacia e começou a lavar os pés dos discípulos e a enxugá-los com a toalha. 6 Quando chegou perto de Simão Pedro, este lhe perguntou:

— Vai lavar os meus pés, Senhor?

7 Jesus respondeu:

— Agora você não entende o que estou fazendo, porém mais tarde vai entender!

8 — O senhor nunca lavará os meus pés! — disse Pedro.

— Se eu não lavar, você não será mais meu discípulo! — respondeu Jesus.

9 — Então, Senhor, não lave somente os meus pés; lave também as minhas mãos e a minha cabeça! — pediu Simão Pedro.

10 Aí Jesus disse:

— Quem já tomou banho está completamente limpo e precisa lavar somente os pés. Vocês todos estão limpos, isto é, todos menos um.

11 Jesus sabia quem era o traidor. Foi por isso que disse: "Todos menos um."

12 Depois de lavar os pés dos seus discípulos, Jesus vestiu de novo a capa, sentou-se outra vez à mesa e perguntou:

— Vocês entenderam o que eu fiz? 13 Vocês me chamam de "Mestre" e de "Senhor" e têm razão, pois eu sou mesmo. 14 Se eu, o Senhor e o Mestre, lavei os pés de vocês, então vocês devem lavar os pés uns dos outros. 15 Pois eu dei o exemplo para que vocês façam o que eu fiz. 16 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: o empregado não é mais importante do que o patrão, e o mensageiro não é mais importante do que aquele que o enviou. 17 Já que vocês conhecem esta verdade, serão felizes se a praticarem.

18 — Não estou falando de vocês todos; eu conheço aqueles que escolhi. Pois tem de se cumprir o que as Escrituras Sagradas dizem: "Aquele que toma refeições comigo se virou contra mim". 19 Digo isso a vocês agora, antes que aconteça, para que, quando acontecer, vocês creiam que "Eu Sou Quem Sou". 20 Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: quem receber aquele que eu enviar estará também me recebendo; e quem me recebe recebe aquele que me enviou.

21 Depois de dizer isso, Jesus ficou muito aflito e declarou abertamente aos discípulos:

— Eu afirmo a vocês que isto é verdade: um de vocês vai me trair.

22 Então eles olharam uns para os outros, sem saber de quem ele estava falando. 23 Ao lado de Jesus estava sentado um deles, a quem Jesus amava. 24 Simão Pedro fez um sinal para ele e disse:

— Pergunte de quem o Mestre está falando.

25 Então aquele discípulo chegou mais perto de Jesus e perguntou:

— Senhor, quem é ele?

26 — É aquele a quem vou dar um pedaço de pão passado no molho! — respondeu Jesus.

Em seguida pegou um pedaço de pão, passou no molho e deu a Judas, filho de Simão Iscariotes. 27 E assim que Judas recebeu o pão, Satanás entrou nele. Então Jesus disse a Judas:

— O que você vai fazer faça logo!

28 Nenhum dos que estavam à mesa entendeu por que Jesus disse isso. 29 Como era Judas que tomava conta da bolsa do dinheiro, alguns pensaram que Jesus tinha mandado que ele comprasse alguma coisa para a festa ou desse alguma ajuda aos pobres.

30 Judas recebeu o pão e saiu logo. E era noite.

31 Quando Judas saiu, Jesus disse:

— Agora a natureza divina do Filho do Homem é revelada, e por meio dele é revelada também a natureza gloriosa de Deus. 32 E, se por meio dele a natureza gloriosa de Deus for revelada, então Deus revelará em si mesmo a natureza divina do Filho do Homem. E Deus fará isso agora mesmo. 33 Meus filhos, não vou ficar com vocês por muito tempo. Vocês vão me procurar, mas eu digo agora o que já disse aos líderes judeus: vocês não podem ir para onde eu vou. 34 Eu lhes dou este novo mandamento: amem uns aos outros. Assim como eu os amei, amem também uns aos outros. 35 Se tiverem amor uns pelos outros, todos saberão que vocês são meus discípulos.

36 Simão Pedro perguntou a Jesus:

— Senhor, para onde é que o senhor vai?

Jesus respondeu:

— Você não pode ir agora para onde eu vou. Um dia você poderá me seguir!

37 Pedro tornou a perguntar:

— Senhor, por que eu não posso segui-lo agora? Eu estou pronto para morrer pelo senhor!

38 — Está mesmo? — perguntou Jesus. — Pois eu afirmo a você que isto é verdade: antes que o galo cante, você dirá três vezes que não me conhece.

1 Now before the feast of the passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them unto the end.2 And supper being ended, the devil having now put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him;3 Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he came from God, and went to God;4 He rose from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself.5 After that he poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples' feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which he was girded.6 Then came he to Simon Peter: and Peter said unto him, Lord, do you wash my feet?7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do you know not now; but you shall know hereafter.8 Peter said unto him, You shall never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash you not, you have no part with me.9 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.10 Jesus said to him, He that is washed needs not except to wash his feet, but is clean completely: and you are clean, but not all.11 For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, You are not all clean.12 So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was seated again, he said unto them, Know you what I have done to you?13 You call me Teacher and Lord: and you say rightly; for so I am.14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet; you also ought to wash one another's feet.15 For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.16 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him.17 If you know these things, happy are you if you do them.18 I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eats bread with me has lifted up his heel against me.19 Now I tell you before it comes, that, when it has come to pass, you may believe that I am he.20 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receives whomsoever I send receives me; and he that receives me receives him that sent me.21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me.22 Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spoke.23 Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.24 Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spoke.25 He then lying on Jesus' breast said unto him, Lord, who is it?26 Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a morsel, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.27 And after the morsel Satan entered into him. Then said Jesus unto him, What you do, do quickly.28 Now no man at the table knew for what intent he spoke this unto him.29 For some of them thought, because Judas had the bag, that Jesus had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of for the feast; or, that he should give something to the poor.30 He then having received the morsel went immediately out: and it was night.31 Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him.32 If God be glorified in him, God shall also glorify him in himself, and shall immediately glorify him.33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You shall seek me: and as I said unto the Jews, Where I go, you cannot come; so now I say to you.34 A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.35 By this shall all men know that you are my disciples, if you have love one to another.36 Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, where do you go? Jesus answered him, Where I go, you cannot follow me now; but you shall follow me afterwards.37 Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow you now? I will lay down my life for your sake.38 Jesus answered him, Will you lay down your life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto you, The cock shall not crow, till you have denied me three times.
