1 Havia um homem da tribo de Efraim, chamado Elcana, que vivia na cidade de Ramá, na região montanhosa de Efraim. Ele era filho de Jeroão, neto de Eliú, bisneto de Toú e trineto de Zufe. 2 Elcana tinha duas mulheres, Ana e Penina. Penina tinha filhos, porém Ana não tinha. 3 Todos os anos Elcana saía da sua cidade e ia a Siló a fim de adorar e oferecer sacrifícios ao Senhor Todo-Poderoso. Hofni e Fineias, os filhos de Eli, eram sacerdotes do Senhor Deus, em Siló. 4 Cada vez que Elcana oferecia o seu sacrifício, ele dava uma parte para Penina e outra para todos os seus filhos e filhas. 5 Mas para Ana ele dava duas vezes mais. Elcana a amava muito, embora o Senhor não permitisse que ela tivesse filhos. 6 Penina, sua rival, provocava e humilhava Ana porque o Senhor não permitia que ela tivesse filhos. 7 Isso acontecia ano após ano. Sempre que iam ao santuário do Senhor, Penina irritava tanto Ana, que ela ficava só chorando e não comia nada. 8 Um dia o seu marido Elcana lhe perguntou:

— Ana, por que você está chorando? Por que não come? Por que está sempre triste? Por acaso, eu não sou melhor para você do que dez filhos?

9 Certa vez eles estavam em Siló e tinham acabado de comer. Eli, o sacerdote, estava sentado na sua cadeira, na porta da Tenda Sagrada. 10 Aí Ana se levantou aflita e, chorando muito, orou a Deus, o Senhor. 11 E fez esta promessa solene:

— Ó Senhor Todo-Poderoso, olha para mim, tua serva! Vê a minha aflição e lembra de mim! Não esqueças a tua serva! Se tu me deres um filho, prometo que o dedicarei a ti por toda a vida e que nunca ele cortará o cabelo .

12 Ana continuou orando ao Senhor durante tanto tempo, que Eli começou a prestar atenção nela 13 e notou que os seus lábios se mexiam, porém não saía nenhum som. Ana estava orando em silêncio, mas Eli pensou que ela estava bêbada 14 e disse:

— Até quando você vai ficar embriagada? Veja se para de beber!

15 — Senhor — respondeu ela —, eu não estou bêbada. Não bebi nem vinho nem cerveja. Estou desesperada e estava orando, contando a minha aflição ao Senhor. 16 Não pense que sou uma mulher sem moral. Eu estava orando daquele jeito porque sou muito infeliz e sofredora.

17 Então Eli disse:

— Vá em paz. Que o Deus de Israel lhe dê o que você pediu!

18 — Que o senhor sempre pense bem de mim! — respondeu ela. E saiu. Então comeu alguma coisa e já não estava tão triste.

19 Na manhã seguinte Elcana e a sua família se levantaram cedo e adoraram a Deus, o Senhor. Aí voltaram para casa, em Ramá. Elcana teve relações com a sua esposa Ana, e o Senhor respondeu à oração dela. 20 Ela ficou grávida e, no tempo certo, deu à luz um filho. Pôs nele o nome de Samuel e explicou:

— Eu pedi esse filho a Deus, o Senhor.

21 Elcana e a sua família foram a Siló para oferecer ao Senhor o sacrifício anual e o sacrifício especial que ele havia prometido. 22 Ana, porém, não foi. Ela disse ao marido:

— Assim que o menino for desmamado, eu o levarei ao santuário de Deus, o Senhor, para que ele fique lá toda a sua vida.

23 Elcana respondeu:

— Faça o que achar melhor. Fique em casa até que ele seja desmamado. E o Senhor faça com que, de fato, se cumpra a promessa que você fez.

Então Ana ficou em casa e amamentou o filho.

24 Depois que ele foi desmamado, ela o levou a Siló. Levou também um touro de três anos, dez quilos de farinha e um odre cheio de vinho. Samuel era muito novo quando a sua mãe o levou à casa do Senhor, em Siló. 25 Os pais de Samuel ofereceram o touro em sacrifício e levaram o menino para Eli. 26 Ana disse:

— Meu senhor, juro pela sua vida que sou aquela mulher que o senhor viu aqui de pé, orando. 27 Eu pedi esta criança a Deus, o Senhor, e ele me deu o que pedi. 28 Por isso agora eu estou dedicando este menino ao Senhor. Enquanto ele viver, pertencerá ao Senhor.

Então eles adoraram a Deus ali.

1 Now there was a certain man of Ramathaim Zophim, of the hill country of Ephraim, and his name was Elkanah, the son of Jeroham, the son of Elihu, the son of Tohu, the son of Zuph, an Ephraimite:2 and he had two wives; the name of the one was Hannah, and the name of other Peninnah: and Peninnah had children, but Hannah had no children.3 This man went up out of his city from year to year to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh. The two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests to the Lord, were there.4 When the day came that Elkanah sacrificed, he gave to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions:5 but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but the Lord had shut up her womb.6 Her rival taunted her severely, to irritate her, because the Lord had shut up her womb.7 As he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the Lord, so she taunted her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.8 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Hannah, why do you weep? Why do you not eat? Why is your heart grieved? Am I not better to you than ten sons?"9 So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drank. Now Eli the priest was sitting on his seat by the doorpost of the Lord's temple.10 She was in bitterness of soul, and prayed to the Lord, and wept bitterly.11 She vowed a vow, and said, "Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me, and not forget your handmaid, but will give to your handmaid a boy, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come on his head."12 It happened, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli saw her mouth.13 Now Hannah spoke in her heart. Only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard. Therefore Eli thought she was drunk.14 Eli said to her, "How long will you make yourself drunk? Put away your wine from you."15 Hannah answered, "No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit. I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but I poured out my soul before the Lord.16 Do not count your handmaid as a worthless woman; for I have been speaking out of the abundance of my distress and my anguish."17 Then Eli answered, "Go in peace; and may the God of Israel grant your petition that you have asked of him."18 She said, "Let your handmaid find favor in your sight." So the woman went her way, and ate; and her facial expression wasn't sad any more.19 They rose up in the morning early, and worshiped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her.20 It happened, when the time had come, that Hannah conceived, and bore a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, "Because I have asked him of the Lord."21 The man Elkanah, and all his house, went up to offer to the Lord the yearly sacrifice, and his vow.22 But Hannah did not go up; for she said to her husband, "Not until the child is weaned; then I will bring him, that he may appear before the Lord, and stay there forever."23 Elkanah her husband said to her, "Do what seems good to you. Wait until you have weaned him; only may the Lord establish his word."So the woman waited and nursed her son, until she weaned him.24 When she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with a three year old bull, and one ephah of meal, and a bottle of wine, and brought him to the Lord's house in Shiloh. The child was young.25 They killed the bull, and brought the child to Eli.26 She said, "Oh, my lord, as your soul lives, my lord, I am the woman who stood by you here, praying to the Lord.27 For this child I prayed; and the Lord has given me my petition which I asked of him.28 Therefore also I have granted him to the Lord. As long as he lives he is granted to the Lord." He worshiped the Lord there.
