1 O rei Salomão resolveu construir um templo para a adoração de Deus, o Senhor, e também um palácio para si mesmo. 2 Alistou setenta mil homens para carregarem o material e oitenta mil para cortarem pedras nas montanhas. E colocou três mil e seiscentos chefes para dirigirem o trabalho. 3 Depois mandou a Hirão, rei de Tiro, a seguinte mensagem:

"Você vendeu ao meu pai, o rei Davi, cedros para que ele construísse o seu palácio. Agora faça o mesmo comigo. 4 Estou pronto para construir um templo onde o Senhor, meu Deus, será adorado. Será um lugar santo, onde queimaremos incenso cheiroso em adoração a Deus e lhe apresentaremos sempre os pães sagrados. Todas as manhãs e todas as tardes, ofereceremos em sacrifício animais que serão completamente queimados; faremos a mesma coisa nos sábados, nas Festas da Lua Nova e nas outras festas em honra do Senhor, nosso Deus. É nossa obrigação fazer isso para sempre. 5 Vou construir um Templo enorme, pois o nosso Deus é maior do que todos os outros deuses. 6 Mas, se Deus não cabe nem mesmo no céu, que é tão grande, quem pode construir um templo para ele? E quem sou eu para levantar um templo digno de Deus, a não ser que seja um lugar onde se queime incenso em honra dele? 7 Portanto, mande-me um homem que saiba trabalhar em ouro, prata, bronze e ferro; que saiba fazer tecidos de fios de lã púrpura, vermelha e azul e que saiba entalhar madeira. Ele trabalhará em Judá e em Jerusalém com os meus artesãos que foram contratados por Davi, o meu pai. 8 Sei que os seus trabalhadores sabem cortar árvores; portanto, mande-me do Líbano madeira de cedro, de pinho e de sândalo. Os meus homens trabalharão junto com os seus, 9 a fim de preparar muita madeira, pois o templo que vou construir será grande e maravilhoso. 10 Para os seus trabalhadores que vão cortar as árvores eu fornecerei duas mil toneladas de trigo, duas mil toneladas de cevada, quatrocentos mil litros de vinho e quatrocentos mil litros de azeite."

11 Em resposta, o rei Hirão mandou a Salomão a seguinte carta:

"O Senhor Deus ama o seu povo e por isso fez com que você fosse o rei deles. 12 Louvado seja o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, o Criador do céu e da terra! Louvado seja Deus, que deu ao rei Davi um filho tão cheio de sabedoria, tão inteligente e prudente, que vai construir um templo para Deus e um palácio para si mesmo! 13 E agora eu vou lhe mandar Hurã, um mestre artesão inteligente e capaz. 14 A sua mãe pertencia à tribo de Dã, e o seu pai era da cidade de Tiro. Ele trabalha em ouro, prata, bronze, ferro, pedra e madeira; sabe fazer tecidos de linho fino e de fios de lã púrpura, azul e vermelha. É perito também em obras de entalhe e sabe executar qualquer desenho que lhe seja apresentado. Ele trabalhará com os seus artesãos e com os artesãos do rei Davi, o seu ilustre pai. 15 Eu peço que você nos mande o trigo, a cevada, o vinho e o azeite que prometeu. 16 Nós cortaremos nos montes Líbanos todas as árvores que você precisar. Levaremos as toras até o mar, faremos jangadas com elas e as levaremos por mar até o porto de Jope. Dali você as levará para Jerusalém."

17 O rei Salomão fez uma contagem de todos os estrangeiros que moravam em Israel, como Davi, o seu pai, tinha feito. Havia no país cento e cinquenta e três mil e seiscentos estrangeiros. 18 Salomão separou setenta mil deles para carregarem o material, oitenta mil para cortarem pedras nas montanhas e três mil e seiscentos como chefes para dirigirem o trabalho.

1 Now Solomon purposed to build a house for the name of the Lord, and a house for his kingdom.2 Solomon counted out seventy thousand men to bear burdens, and eighty thousand men who were stone cutters in the mountains, and three thousand and six hundred to oversee them.3 Solomon sent to Huram the king of Tyre, saying, "As you dealt with David my father, and sent him cedars to build him a house in which to dwell, so deal with me.4 Behold, I am about to build a house for the name of the Lord my God, to dedicate it to him, and to burn before him incense of sweet spices, and for the continual show bread, and for the burnt offerings morning and evening, on the Sabbaths, and on the new moons, and on the set feasts of the Lord our God. This is an ordinance forever to Israel.5 "The house which I build is great; for our God is great above all gods.6 But who is able to build him a house, since heaven and the heaven of heavens can't contain him? Who am I then, that I should build him a house, except just to burn incense before him?7 "Now therefore send me a man skillful to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, and in iron, and in purple, and crimson, and blue, and who knows how to engrave engravings, to be with the skillful men who are with me in Judah and in Jerusalem, whom David my father provided.8 "Send me also cedar trees, fir trees, and algum trees, out of Lebanon; for I know that your servants know how to cut timber in Lebanon: and behold, my servants shall be with your servants,9 even to prepare me timber in abundance; for the house which I am about to build shall be great and wonderful.10 Behold, I will give to your servants, the cutters who cut timber, twenty thousand measures of beaten wheat, and twenty thousand measures of barley, and twenty thousand baths of wine, and twenty thousand baths of oil."11 Then Huram the king of Tyre answered in writing, which he sent to Solomon, "Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you king over them."12 Huram continued, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, that made heaven and earth, who has given to David the king a wise son, endowed with discretion and understanding, that should build a house for the Lord, and a house for his kingdom.13 Now I have sent a skillful man, endowed with understanding, of Huram my father's,14 the son of a woman of the daughters of Dan; and his father was a man of Tyre, skillful to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, in iron, in stone, and in timber, in purple, in blue, and in fine linen, and in crimson, also to engrave any kind of engraving, and to execute any design; that there may be a place appointed to him with your skillful men, and with the skillful men of my lord David your father.15 "Now therefore the wheat and the barley, the oil and the wine, which my lord has spoken of, let him send to his servants:16 and we will cut wood out of Lebanon, as much as you shall need; and we will bring it to you in floats by sea to Joppa; and you shall carry it up to Jerusalem."17 Solomon numbered all the foreigners who were in the land of Israel, after the numbering with which David his father had numbered them; and they were found one hundred fifty-three thousand six hundred.18 He set seventy thousand of them to bear burdens, and eighty thousand who were stone cutters in the mountains, and three thousand six hundred overseers to set the people at work.
