1 Assim que o rei Ezequias ouviu o que eles contaram, rasgou as suas roupas em sinal de tristeza, vestiu uma roupa feita de pano grosseiro e foi para o Templo do Senhor. 2 Ele mandou que Eliaquim, o encarregado do palácio, Sebna, o escrivão, e os sacerdotes mais velhos fossem falar com o profeta Isaías, filho de Amoz. Eles também estavam vestindo roupas de pano grosseiro. 3 A mensagem que o rei mandou entregar a Isaías foi esta: "Hoje é um dia de sofrimento; nós estamos sendo castigados e estamos envergonhados. Somos como uma mulher que está para dar à luz, mas não tem forças para isso. 4 O rei da Assíria nos mandou o chefe do seu exército para insultar o Deus vivo. Que o Senhor, nosso Deus, escute esses insultos e castigue quem os disse! Portanto, ore a Deus pelas pessoas do nosso povo que ainda estão vivas."

5 Os funcionários do rei Ezequias levaram a mensagem, 6 e Isaías mandou esta resposta: "O Senhor Deus diz que o senhor não deve deixar que os assírios o assustem, dizendo que Deus não pode salvá-lo. 7 Deus vai fazer o rei assírio ouvir uma notícia que o fará voltar para a terra dele, e Deus vai fazer com que ele seja morto ali."

8 O oficial assírio soube que o rei da Assíria havia saído de Laquis e que estava lutando contra a cidade de Libna. Então foi até lá para falar com ele. 9 Os assírios souberam que o exército dos egípcios, comandado pelo rei Tiraca, da Etiópia, vinha vindo para atacá-los. Quando o rei da Assíria soube disso, mandou uma carta para o rei Ezequias, de Judá. 10 A carta dizia assim: "O seu deus, em quem você confia, lhe disse que Jerusalém não vai cair nas minhas mãos; mas não deixe que ele o engane. 11 Você já ouviu falar daquilo que um rei assírio faz com qualquer país que ele resolve destruir? Por acaso, você pensa que poderá escapar? 12 Os meus antepassados destruíram as cidades de Gozã, Harã e Rezefe e mataram o povo de Éden, que morava em Telassar, e nenhum dos seus deuses os pôde salvar. 13 Onde estão os reis das cidades de Hamate, Arpade, Sefarvaim, Hena e Iva?"

14 O rei Ezequias recebeu a carta das mãos dos mensageiros e a leu. Então foi até o Templo, pôs a carta ali, na presença de Deus, o Senhor, 15 e orou assim:

— Ó Senhor, Deus de Israel, que estás sentado no teu trono que fica acima dos querubins! Só tu és Deus e governas todos os reinos do mundo. Tu fizeste os céus e a terra. 16 Ó Senhor, olha para o que está acontecendo com a gente. Escuta todas as coisas que Senaqueribe está dizendo a fim de insultar a ti, o Deus vivo. 17 Todos nós sabemos, ó Senhor, que os reis da Assíria destruíram muitas nações, arrasaram as suas terras 18 e queimaram os seus deuses, que não eram deuses de verdade e sim imagens de madeira e de pedra feitas por mãos humanas. 19 Agora, ó Senhor, nosso Deus, salva-nos dos assírios, para que todas as nações do mundo fiquem sabendo que só tu, ó Senhor, és Deus.

20 Então Isaías mandou uma mensagem para o rei Ezequias. Nela, ele dizia que, em resposta à oração do rei, 21 o Senhor, o Deus de Israel, tinha dito o seguinte: "A cidade de Jerusalém ri e caçoa de você, Senaqueribe. 22 Contra quem você pensa que falou? Para quem você olhou com orgulho? A quem você pensa que ofendeu e insultou? Você fez tudo isso contra mim, o Santo Deus de Israel. 23 Você me mandou os seus mensageiros para se gabarem de que com os seus muitos carros de guerra você conquistou as mais altas montanhas do Líbano. Você se gabou de ter cortado os mais altos cedros e os melhores ciprestes e de ter chegado até os lugares mais distantes das lindas florestas. 24 Você se gabou de ter cavado poços em terras estrangeiras e de ter bebido da água deles. Gabou-se também de que os pés dos seus soldados fizeram secar o rio Nilo.

25 "Por acaso, você não sabe que fui eu que planejei tudo isso há muito tempo e agora fiz tudo acontecer? Eu dei a você o poder de fazer cidades cercadas de muralhas virarem montões de entulho. 26 Por isso, os seus moradores ficaram fracos e andavam cheios de medo e de vergonha. Eles ficaram como o capim do campo e a erva verde e como a erva que cresce nos telhados, quando o vento quente do leste sopra e os faz secar.

27 "Mas eu o conheço muito bem; sei o que você faz e aonde vai. Sei que você me odeia. 28 Eu soube do seu ódio e do seu orgulho, e agora vou pôr uma argola no seu nariz e um freio na sua boca, e farei você voltar pelo mesmo caminho por onde veio."

29 Depois Isaías disse ao rei Ezequias:

— Este é o sinal daquilo que vai acontecer: neste ano e no ano que vem, vocês terão para comer somente aquilo que nascer por si mesmo, sem ser plantado. Mas no ano seguinte vocês poderão semear e colher cereais, plantar parreiras e comer as uvas. 30 As pessoas de Judá que não tiverem morrido vão florescer como plantas que firmam as suas raízes na terra e dão frutas. 31 Pois ficará gente em Jerusalém e no monte Sião porque o Senhor Deus resolveu fazer com que isso aconteça.

32 Isaías continuou:

— Portanto, o Senhor Deus diz o seguinte a respeito do rei da Assíria: "Ele não entrará nesta cidade e não atirará uma só flecha contra ela. Nenhum soldado com escudo chegará perto da cidade, e não serão construídas rampas de ataque ao redor dela. 33 O rei da Assíria vai voltar pelo mesmo caminho por onde veio, sem ter entrado nesta cidade. 34 Eu defenderei e protegerei esta cidade por causa da minha honra e por causa da promessa que fiz ao meu servo Davi. Eu, o Senhor, falei."

35 Naquela noite o Anjo do Senhor foi até o acampamento dos assírios e matou cento e oitenta e cinco mil soldados. De manhã, os que sobraram viram os corpos dos mortos. 36 Então Senaqueribe, rei da Assíria, se retirou, voltou para Nínive e ficou lá. 37 Certo dia, quando ele estava adorando no templo do seu deus Nisroque, os seus filhos Adrameleque e Sarezer o mataram à espada e fugiram para a terra de Ararate. Outro filho seu, chamado Esar-Hadom, ficou no lugar dele como rei.

1 It happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the Lord.2 He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.3 They said to him, "Thus says Hezekiah, 'This day is a day of trouble, of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the point of birth, and there is no strength to deliver them.4 It may be the Lord your God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which the Lord your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.'"5 So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.6 Isaiah said to them, "Thus you shall tell your master, 'Thus says the Lord, "Do not be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.7 Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he will hear news, and will return to his own land. I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land."'"8 So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he had departed from Lachish.9 When he heard it said of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, "Behold, he has come out to fight against you, he sent messengers again to Hezekiah, saying,10 'Thus you shall speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, "Do not let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.11 Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly. Will you be delivered?12 Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden that were in Telassar?13 Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?"'"14 Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it. Then Hezekiah went up to the house of the Lord, and spread it before the Lord.15 Hezekiah prayed before the Lord, and said, "The Lord, the God of Israel, who sit above the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.16 Incline your ear, Lord, and hear. Open your eyes, Lord, and see. Hear the words of Sennacherib, with which he has sent to defy the living God.17 Truly, Lord, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,18 and have cast their gods into the fire; for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone. Therefore they have destroyed them.19 Now therefore, the Lord our God, save us, I beg you, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, Lord, are God alone."20 Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, "Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, 'Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard you.21 This is the word that the Lord has spoken concerning him: "The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you. The daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.22 Whom have you defied and blasphemed? Against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? Against the Holy One of Israel.23 By your messengers you have defied the Lord, and have said, 'With the multitude of my chariots, I have come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down its tall cedars, and its choice fir trees; and I will enter into his farthest lodging place, the forest of his fruitful field.24 I have dug and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.'25 Haven't you heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? Now have I brought it to pass, that it should be yours to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.26 Therefore their inhabitants were of small power. They were dismayed and confounded. They were like the grass of the field, and like the green herb, like the grass on the housetops, and like grain blasted before it has grown up.27 But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me.28 Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance has come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came."29 "'This shall be the sign to you: You shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat its fruit.30 The remnant that has escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.31 For out of Jerusalem a remnant will go out, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of the Lord will perform this.'32 "Therefore thus says the Lord concerning the king of Assyria, 'He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.33 By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city,' says the Lord.34 'For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.'"35 It happened that night, that the angel of the Lord went out, and struck one hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of the Assyrians. When men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.36 So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh.37 It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
