1 Meus irmãos, somente poucos de vocês deveriam se tornar mestres na Igreja, pois vocês sabem que nós, os que ensinamos, seremos julgados com mais rigor do que os outros. 2 Todos nós sempre cometemos erros. Quem não comete nenhum erro no que diz é uma pessoa madura, capaz de controlar todo o seu corpo. 3 Até na boca dos cavalos colocamos um freio para que nos obedeçam e assim fazemos com que vão aonde queremos. 4 Pensem no navio: grande como é, empurrado por ventos fortes, ele é guiado por um pequeno leme e vai aonde o piloto quer. 5 É isto o que acontece com a língua: mesmo pequena, ela se gaba de grandes coisas.
Vejam como uma grande floresta pode ser incendiada por uma pequena chama! 6 A língua é um fogo. Ela é um mundo de maldade, ocupa o seu lugar no nosso corpo e espalha o mal em todo o nosso ser. Com o fogo que vem do próprio inferno, ela põe toda a nossa vida em chamas. 7 O ser humano é capaz de dominar todas as criaturas e tem dominado os animais selvagens, os pássaros, os animais que se arrastam pelo chão e os peixes. 8 Mas ninguém ainda foi capaz de dominar a língua. Ela é má, cheia de veneno mortal, e ninguém a pode controlar. 9 Usamos a língua tanto para agradecer ao Senhor e Pai como para amaldiçoar as pessoas, que foram criadas parecidas com Deus. 10 Da mesma boca saem palavras tanto de agradecimento como de maldição. Meus irmãos, isso não deve ser assim. 11 Por acaso pode a mesma fonte jorrar água doce e água amarga? 12 Meus irmãos, por acaso pode uma figueira dar azeitonas ou um pé de uva dar figos? Assim, também, uma fonte de água salgada não pode dar água doce.
13 Existe entre vocês alguém que seja sábio e inteligente? Pois então que prove isso pelo seu bom comportamento e pelas suas ações, praticadas com humildade e sabedoria. 14 Mas, se no coração de vocês existe inveja, amargura e egoísmo, então não mintam contra a verdade, gabando-se de serem sábios. 15 Essa espécie de sabedoria não vem do céu; ela é deste mundo, é da nossa natureza humana e é diabólica. 16 Pois, onde há inveja e egoísmo, há também confusão e todo tipo de coisas más. 17 A sabedoria que vem do céu é antes de tudo pura; e é também pacífica, bondosa e amigável. Ela é cheia de misericórdia, produz uma colheita de boas ações, não trata os outros pela sua aparência e é livre de fingimento. 18 Pois a bondade é a colheita produzida pelas sementes que foram plantadas pelos que trabalham em favor da paz.
1 My brethren, be not many teachers, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2 For in many things we all offend. If any man offendeth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
3 Behold, we put bits in the mouths of horses, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4 Behold also the ships, which though they are so great, and are driven by fierce winds, yet they are turned about with a very small helm, withersoever the governor willeth.
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire from hell.
7 For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of animals in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind:
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9 With this we bless God, even the Father; and with this we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God.
10 Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11 Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12 Can the fig-tree, my brethren, bear olive-berries? or a vine, figs? so no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.
13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show by a good deportment his works with meekness of wisdom.
14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demoniacal.
16 For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.
