1 No ano vinte e três do reinado de Joás, filho de Acazias, em Judá, Jeoacaz, filho de Jeú, se tornou rei de Israel e governou dezessete anos em Samaria. 2 Jeoacaz fez coisas erradas, que não agradam a Deus, o Senhor, e cometeu aqueles mesmos pecados que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, havia feito o povo de Israel cometer no passado. Ele nunca se afastou dos seus maus caminhos. 3 Por isso, o Senhor ficou irado com Israel e deixou que o rei Hazael, da Síria, e o seu filho Ben-Hadade vencessem os israelitas muitas e muitas vezes. 4 Então Jeoacaz orou a Deus, o Senhor, e ele respondeu à sua oração, pois viu como o rei da Síria fazia o povo de Israel sofrer. 5 O Senhor mandou um líder que livrou os israelitas dos sírios, e assim eles viveram em paz, como antes. 6 Porém não abandonaram aqueles pecados que Jeroboão havia feito o povo de Israel cometer no passado, mas continuaram cometendo-os; e o poste da deusa Aserá ficou em Samaria.

7 De todo o seu exército, Jeoacaz ficou somente com cinquenta cavaleiros, dez carros de guerra e dez mil soldados de infantaria porque o rei da Síria havia acabado com os outros, esmagando-os como pó.

8 Todas as outras coisas que Jeoacaz fez e também os seus atos de coragem estão escritos na História dos Reis de Israel. 9 Ele morreu e foi sepultado em Samaria, e o seu filho Jeoás ficou no lugar dele como rei.

10 No ano trinta e sete do reinado de Joás, de Judá, Jeoás, filho de Jeoacaz, se tornou rei de Israel e governou dezesseis anos em Samaria. 11 Jeoás fez coisas erradas, que não agradam a Deus, o Senhor. Ele não abandonou aqueles mesmos pecados que Jeroboão, filho de Nebate, havia feito o povo de Israel cometer no passado, mas continuou cometendo-os. 12 Todas as outras coisas que Jeoás fez e também a sua coragem na batalha contra o rei Amazias, de Judá, estão escritas na História dos Reis de Israel. 13 Jeoás morreu e foi sepultado nos túmulos dos reis, em Samaria, e o seu filho Jeroboão II ficou no lugar dele como rei.

14 O profeta Eliseu foi atacado por uma doença sem cura. Quando ele estava para morrer, o rei Jeoás foi visitá-lo. Então o abraçou e chorou, dizendo:

— Meu pai, meu pai! O senhor foi como um exército para defender Israel!

15 Então Eliseu disse:

— Pegue um arco e algumas flechas.

Jeoás pegou o arco e as flechas, 16 e Eliseu lhe disse que se preparasse para atirar. E o rei fez o que ele mandava. Aí Eliseu pôs as mãos por cima das mãos do rei 17 e disse:

— Abra a janela que dá para o lado da Síria.

O rei abriu. Então Eliseu mandou:

— Atire a flecha!

Assim que o rei atirou, Eliseu disse:

— O senhor é a flecha do Senhor Deus; é por meio do senhor que Deus vai conseguir a vitória contra a Síria. O senhor lutará contra os sírios em Afeca até vencê-los.

18 Depois Eliseu disse a Jeoás que pegasse as outras flechas e batesse no chão com elas. O rei bateu três vezes no chão e parou. 19 Eliseu ficou zangado com isso e disse:

— O senhor devia ter batido cinco ou seis vezes e assim venceria completamente os sírios; mas agora vai vencê-los só três vezes.

20 Então Eliseu morreu e foi sepultado.

Todos os anos bandos de moabitas costumavam invadir a terra de Israel. 21 Certa vez, alguns israelitas que estavam fazendo um sepultamento viram um desses bandos. Então os israelitas jogaram o defunto na sepultura de Eliseu e fugiram. Assim que o corpo tocou nos ossos de Eliseu, o homem ficou vivo de novo e se levantou.

22 O rei Hazael, da Síria, dominou o povo de Israel durante todo o tempo em que Jeoacaz foi rei. 23 Mas o Senhor Deus foi bondoso com os israelitas. Ele não deixou que fossem destruídos, mas ajudou-os por causa da aliança que havia feito com Abraão, com Isaque e com Jacó. Ele nunca esqueceu o seu povo.

24 Quando o rei Hazael, da Síria, morreu, o seu filho Ben-Hadade se tornou rei. 25 O rei Jeoás, de Israel, derrotou Ben-Hadade três vezes e reconquistou as cidades que haviam sido tomadas por Ben-Hadade durante o reinado de Jeoacaz, o pai de Jeoás.

1 In the thre and twentithe yeer of Joas, sone of Ocozie, kyng of Juda, Joachaz, sone of Hieu, regnede on Israel, in Samarie seuentene yeer.2 And he dide yuel bifor the Lord, and he suede the synnes of Jeroboam, sone of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne; and he bowide not awei fro tho.3 And the strong veniaunce of the Lord was wrooth ayens Israel, and he bitook hem in to the hondis of Azael, kyng of Sirie, and in the hond of Benadab, sone of Asael, in alle daies.4 Forsothe Joachaz bisouyte the face of the Lord, and the Lord herde hym; for he siy the anguysch of Israel, for the kyng of Sirie hadde al to brokun hem.5 And the Lord yaf a sauyour to Israel, and he was delyuered fro the hond of the kyng of Sirie; and the sones of Israel dwelliden in her tabernaclis, as yistirdai and the thridde dai ago.6 Netheles thei departiden not fro the synnes of the hows of Jeroboam, that made Israel to do synne; thei yeden in tho synnes; sotheli also the wode dwellide in Samarie.7 And to Joacham weren not left of the puple, no but fyue hundrid kniytis, and ten charis, and ten thousynde of foot men; for the kyng of Sirie hadde slayn hem, and hadde dryue hem as in to poudur in the threischyng of a cornfloor.8 Forsothe the residue of wordis of Joachaz, and alle thingis whiche he dide, and the strength of hym, whether these ben not wrytun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Israel?9 And Joachaz slepte with hise fadris, and thei birieden hym in Samarie; and Joas, his sone, regnyde for hym.10 In the seuenthe and threttithe yeer of Joas, king of Juda, Joas, sone of Joachaz, regnede on Israel in Samarie sixtene yeer.11 And he dide that, that is yuel in the siyt of the Lord; for he bowide not awei fro alle the synnes of Jeroboam, sone of Nabath, that made Israel to do synne; he yede in tho synnes.12 Forsothe the residue of wordis of Joas, and alle thingis whiche he dide, but also his strengthe, hou he fauyt ayens Amasie, kyng of Juda, whether these ben not writun in the book of wordis of daies of the kyngis of Israel?13 And Joas slepte with hise fadris; forsothe Jeroboam sat on his trone. Sotheli Joas was biried in Samarie with the kyngis of Israel.14 Forsothe Elisee was sijk in sikenesse, bi which and he was deed; and Joas, kyng of Israel, yede doun to hym, and wepte bifor hym, and seide, My fadir! my fadir! the chare of Israel, and the charietere therof!15 And Elisee seide to hym, Brynge thou a bouwe and arowis. And whanne he hadde brouyte to Elisee a bouwe and arowis,16 he seide to the kyng of Israel, Set thin hond on the bouwe. And whanne he hadde set his hond, Elisee settide his hondis on the hondis of the17 kyng, and seide, Opene thou the eest wyndow. And whanne he hadde openyd, Elisee seide, Schete thou an arewe; and he schete. And Elisee seide, It is an arewe of helthe of the Lord, and an arowe of helthe ayens Sirie; and thou schalt smyte Sirie in Affeth, til thou waste it.18 And Elisee seide, Take awei the arowis. And whanne he hadde take awei, Elisee seide eft to him, Smyte thou the erthe with a dart. And whanne he hadde smyte thre tymes,19 and hadde stonde, the man of God was wrooth ayens hym, and seide, If thou haddist smyte fyue sithis, ether sixe sithis, ethir seuen sithis, thou schuldist haue smyte Sirie `til to the endyng; now forsothe thou schalt smyte it thre sithis.20 Therfor Elisee was deed, and thei birieden hym. And the theuys of Moab camen in to the lond in that yeer.21 Forsothe sum men birieden a man, and thei siyen the theues, and thei castiden forth the deed bodi in the sepulcre of Elisee; and whanne it hadde touchid the bonys of Elisee, the man lyuede ayen, and stood on his feet.22 Therfor Azael, kyng of Sirie, turmentide Israel in alle the daies of Joachaz.23 And the Lord hadde merci on hem, and turnede ayen to hem for his couenaunt, which he hadde with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and he nolde distrie hem, nether cast awei outirli, til in to present tyme.24 Forsothe Azael, kyng of Sirie, diede; and Benadad, his sone, regnede for hym.25 Forsothe Joas, sone of Joachas, took awei citees fro the hond of Benadad, sone of Asael, which he hadde take bi the riyt of batel fro the hoond of Joachaz, his fadir; Joas smoot hym thre tymes, and he yeldide the citees of Israel.
