1 No terceiro ano de Jeoaquim como rei de Judá, o rei Nabucodonosor, da Babilônia, atacou Jerusalém, e os seus soldados cercaram a cidade. 2 Deus deixou que Nabucodonosor conquistasse a cidade e também que pegasse alguns objetos de valor que estavam no Templo. Nabucodonosor levou esses objetos para a Babilônia e mandou colocá-los no templo do seu deus, na sala do tesouro.

3 O rei Nabucodonosor chamou Aspenaz, o chefe dos serviços do palácio, e mandou que escolhesse entre os prisioneiros israelitas alguns jovens da família do rei e também das famílias nobres. 4 Todos eles deviam ter boa aparência e não ter nenhum defeito físico; deviam ser inteligentes, instruídos e ser capazes de servir no palácio. E precisariam aprender a língua e estudar os escritos dos babilônios. 5 O rei mandou também que os jovens israelitas recebessem todos os dias a mesma comida e o mesmo vinho que ele, o rei, comia e bebia. Depois de três anos de preparo, esses jovens deviam começar o seu serviço no palácio. 6 Entre os que foram escolhidos estavam Daniel, Ananias, Misael e Azarias, todos da tribo de Judá. 7 Aspenaz lhes deu outros nomes, isto é, Beltessazar, Sadraque, Mesaque e Abede-Nego.

8 Daniel resolveu que não iria ficar impuro por comer a comida e beber o vinho que o rei dava; por isso, foi pedir a Aspenaz que o ajudasse a cumprir o que havia resolvido. 9 Deus fez com que Aspenaz fosse bondoso com Daniel e tivesse boa vontade para com ele. 10 Mas Aspenaz tinha medo do rei e por isso disse a Daniel:

— Foi o rei, o meu senhor, quem resolveu o que vocês devem comer e beber. Se ele notar que vocês estão menos fortes e sadios do que os outros jovens, ele será capaz de me matar, e vocês serão os culpados.

11 Aí Daniel foi falar com o guarda a quem Aspenaz havia encarregado de cuidar dele, de Ananias, de Misael e de Azarias. Daniel disse a ele:

12 — Quero pedir que o senhor faça uma experiência com a gente. Durante dez dias, dê-nos somente legumes para comer e água para beber. 13 No fim dos dez dias, faça uma comparação entre nós e os jovens que comem a comida do rei. Então, dependendo de como estivermos, o senhor fará com a gente o que quiser.

14 O guarda concordou e durante dez dias fez a experiência com eles. 15 Passados os dez dias, os quatro jovens israelitas estavam mais sadios e mais fortes do que os jovens que comiam a comida do rei. 16 Aí o guarda tirou a comida e o vinho que deviam ser servidos aos quatro jovens e só lhes dava legumes para comer.

17 Deus deu aos quatro jovens um conhecimento profundo dos escritos e das ciências dos babilônios, mas a Daniel deu também o dom de explicar visões e sonhos.

18 No fim dos três anos de preparo que o rei Nabucodonosor tinha marcado, Aspenaz levou todos os jovens até a presença do rei. 19 Este falou com eles, e entre todos não havia quem se comparasse com Daniel, Ananias, Misael e Azarias. Por isso, ficaram trabalhando no palácio. 20 Todas as vezes que o rei fazia perguntas a respeito de qualquer assunto que exigisse inteligência ou conhecimento, descobria que os quatro eram dez vezes mais inteligentes do que todos os sábios e adivinhos de toda a Babilônia.

21 E Daniel ficou no palácio real até o ano em que o rei Ciro começou a governar a Babilônia .

1 In the thridde yeer of the rewme of Joachym, king of Juda, Nabugodonosor, the kyng of Babiloyne, cam to Jerusalem, and bisegide it.2 And the Lord bitook in his hond Joachym, the kyng of Juda, and he took a part of the vessels of the hous of God; and he bar out tho in to the lond of Sennaar, in to the hous of his god, and he took the vessels in to the hous of tresour of his god.3 And the kyng seide to Asphaneth, souereyn of his onest seruauntis and chast, that he schulde brynge yn of the sones of Israel, and of the kyngis seed, and the children of tirauntis, in whiche weren no wem,4 faire in schap, and lerned in al wisdom, war in kunnyng, and tauyt in chastisyng, and that myyten stonde in the paleis of the kyng, that he schulde teche hem the lettris and langage of Caldeis.5 And the king ordeynede to hem lijflode bi ech dai of hise meetis, and of the wyn wherof he drank; that thei nurschid bi thre yeer, schulden stonde aftirward bifor the siyt of the kyng.6 Therfor Danyel, Ananye, Myzael, and Azarie, of the sones of Juda, weren among hem.7 And the souereyn of onest seruauntis and chast puttide to hem names; to Danyel he puttide Balthasar; to Ananye, Sidrach; to Mysael, Misach; and to Azarie, Abdenago.8 Forsothe Danyel purposide in his herte, that he schulde not be defoulid of the boord of the kyng, nether of the wyn of his drink; and he preiede the souereyn of onest seruauntis and chast, that he schulde not be defoulid.9 Forsothe God yaf grace and merci to Daniel, in the siyt of the prince of onest seruauntis and chast.10 And the prince of onest seruauntis and chast seide to Daniel, Y drede my lord the king, that ordeinede to you mete and drynk; and if he seeth youre faces lennere than othere yonge wexynge men, youre eueneeldis, ye schulen condempne myn heed to the kyng.11 And Danyel seide to Malazar, whom the prince of onest seruauntis and chast hadde ordeynede on Danyel, Ananye, Mysael, and Asarie,12 Y biseche, asaie thou vs thi seruauntis bi ten daies, and potagis be youun to vs to ete, and water to drynke; and biholde thou oure cheris,13 and the cheris of children that eten the kyngis mete; and as thou seest, so do thou with thi seruauntis.14 And whanne he herde siche a word, he asaiede hem bi ten daies.15 Forsothe after ten daies the cheris of hem apperiden betere and fattere, than alle the children that eeten the kyngis mete.16 Certis Malazar took the metis, and the wyn of the drynk of hem, and yaf to hem potagis.17 Forsothe to these children God yaf kunnyng and lernyng in ech book, and in al wisdom; but to Daniel God yaf vndurstondyng of alle visiouns and dremys.18 Therfor whanne the daies weren fillid, aftir whiche the kyng seide, that thei schulden be brouyt yn, the souereyn of onest seruauntis and chast brouyte in hem, in the siyt of Nabugodonosor.19 And whanne the kyng hadde spoke to hem, siche weren not foundun of alle, as Daniel, Ananye, Misael, and Azarie; and thei stoden in the siyt of the king.20 And ech word of wisdom and of vndurstondyng, which the king axide of hem, he foond in hem ten fold ouer alle false dyuynouris and astronomyens, that weren in al his rewme.21 Forsothe Danyel was til to the firste yeer of king Cyrus.
