1 Então Agripa disse a Paulo: "Você tem permissão para falar em sua defesa". A seguir, Paulo fez sinal com a mão e começou a sua defesa:2 "Rei Agripa, considero-me feliz por poder estar hoje em tua presença, para fazer a minha defesa contra todas as acusações dos judeus,3 e especialmente porque estás bem familiarizado com todos os costumes e controvérsias deles. Portanto, peço que me ouças pacientemente.4 "Todos os judeus sabem como tenho vivido desde pequeno, tanto em minha terra natal como em Jerusalém.5 Eles me conhecem há muito tempo e podem testemunhar, se quiserem, que, como fariseu, vivi de acordo com a seita mais severa da nossa religião.6 Agora, estou sendo julgado por causa da minha esperança no que Deus prometeu aos nossos antepassados.7 Esta é a promessa que as nossas doze tribos esperam que se cumpra, cultuando a Deus com fervor, dia e noite. É por causa desta esperança, ó rei, que estou sendo acusado pelos judeus.8 Por que os senhores acham impossível que Deus ressuscite os mortos?9 "Eu também estava convencido de que deveria fazer todo o possível para me opor ao nome de Jesus, o Nazareno.10 E foi exatamente isso que fiz em Jerusalém. Com autorização dos chefes dos sacerdotes lancei muitos santos na prisão, e quando eles eram condenados à morte eu dava o meu voto contra eles.11 Muitas vezes ia de uma sinagoga para outra a fim de castigá-los, e tentava forçá-los a blasfemar. Em minha fúria contra eles, cheguei a ir a cidades estrangeiras para persegui-los.12 "Numa dessas viagens eu estava indo para Damasco, com autorização e permissão dos chefes dos sacerdotes.13 Por volta do meio-dia, ó rei, estando eu a caminho, vi uma luz do céu, mais resplandecente que o sol, brilhando ao meu redor e ao redor dos que iam comigo.14 Todos caímos por terra. Então ouvi uma voz que me dizia em aramaico. ‘Saulo, Saulo, por que você está me perseguindo? Resistir ao aguilhão só lhe trará dor! ’15 "Então perguntei: Quem és tu, Senhor? "Respondeu o Senhor: ‘Sou Jesus, a quem você está perseguindo.16 Agora, levante-se, fique de pé. Eu lhe apareci para constituí-lo servo e testemunha do que você viu a meu respeito e do que lhe mostrarei.17 Eu o livrarei do seu próprio povo e dos gentios, aos quais eu o envio18 para abrir-lhes os olhos e convertê-los das trevas para a luz, e do poder de Satanás para Deus, a fim de que recebam o perdão dos pecados e herança entre os que são santificados pela fé em mim’.19 "Assim, rei Agripa, não fui desobediente à visão celestial.20 Preguei em primeiro lugar aos que estavam em Damasco, depois aos que estavam em Jerusalém e em toda a Judéia, e também aos gentios, dizendo que se arrependessem e se voltassem para Deus, praticando obras que mostrassem o seu arrependimento.21 Por isso os judeus me prenderam no pátio do templo e tentaram matar-me.22 Mas tenho contado com a ajuda de Deus até o dia de hoje, e, por este motivo, estou aqui e dou testemunho tanto a gente simples como a gente importante. Não estou dizendo nada além do que os profetas e Moisés disseram que haveria de acontecer:23 que o Cristo haveria de sofrer e, sendo o primeiro a ressuscitar dentre os mortos, proclamaria luz para o seu próprio povo e para os gentios".24 A esta altura Festo interrompeu a defesa de Paulo e disse em alta voz: "Você está louco, Paulo! As muitas letras o estão levando à loucura! "25 Respondeu Paulo: "Não estou louco, excelentíssimo Festo. O que estou dizendo é verdadeiro e de bom senso.26 O rei está familiarizado com essas coisas, e lhe posso falar abertamente. Estou certo de que nada disso escapou do seu conhecimento, pois nada se passou num lugar qualquer.27 Rei Agripa, crês nos profetas? Eu sei que sim".28 Então Agripa disse a Paulo: "Você acha que em tão pouco tempo pode convencer-me a tornar-me cristão? "29 Paulo respondeu: "Em pouco ou em muito, peço a Deus que não apenas tu, mas todos os que hoje me ouvem se tornem como eu, menos estas algemas".30 O rei se levantou, e com ele o governador e Berenice, como também os que estavam assentados com eles.31 Saindo do salão, comentavam entre si: "Este homem não fez nada que mereça morte ou prisão".32 Agripa disse a Festo: "Ele poderia ser posto em liberdade, se não tivesse apelado para César".

1 And Agrippa said to Paul, It is permitted thee to speak for thyself. Then Paul, having stretched forth his hand, made a defense.2 Concerning all things of which I am accused by the Jews, king Agrippa, I consider myself blessed, being about to make my defense before thee today.3 Especially thee, being an expert of all things regarding Jews, both habits and issues. Therefore I beg thee to hear me patiently.4 Indeed therefore, my manner of life from youth, having developed from the beginning among my nation at Jerusalem, all the Jews know,5 having known me previously from the beginning, if they were willing to testify, that according to the strictest party of our religion I lived a Pharisee.6 And now for the hope of the promise made by God to the fathers, I stand being judged,7 to which our twelve tribes, serving in earnestness night and day, hope to attain, about which hope, king Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews!8 Why is it judged incredible with you, if God raises the dead?9 Indeed therefore I thought it necessary for myself to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus the Nazarene,10 which also I did at Jerusalem. And I locked up many of the sanctified in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests. And when they were killed, I gave a vote against them.11 And punishing them often at all the synagogues, I compelled them to blaspheme. And being extraordinarily furious toward them, I persecuted them even as far as to outside cities.12 And during which, while going to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests,13 at midday, O king, I saw on the road a light from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, which shone around me and those who went with me.14 And when we all fell to the ground, I heard a voice speaking to me, and saying in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why do thou persecute me? It is hard for thee to kick against the goads.15 And I said, Who are thou, Lord? And he said, I am Jesus whom thou persecute.16 But arise, and stand upon thy feet, for I appeared to thee for this, to appoint thee an assistant and a witness both of things that thou saw, and of the things that I will make visible to thee,17 delivering thee from the people, and from the Gentiles, to whom I send thee,18 to open their eyes to turn about from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, for them to receive remission of sins and a lot among those who have been sanctified by faith in me.19 Whereupon, king Agrippa, I did not become disobedient to the heavenly vision,20 but declaring first to those at Damascus and then at Jerusalem, and in all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, to repent and return to God, doing works worthy of repentance.21 Because of these things the Jews, having seized me in the temple, tried to grasp and kill me.22 Having therefore experienced the help from God, I stand to this day solemnly declaring both to small and great, saying nothing apart from what both the prophets and Moses said was going to happen,23 that the suffering Christ, since first from a resurrection of the dead, is going to proclaim light to our people and to the nations.24 And while he made a defense by these things, Festus said in a loud voice, Paul, thou are mad. Much scholarship is driving thee into madness.25 But Paul says, I am not mad, eminent Festus, but I speak forth sayings of truth and soberness.26 For the king knows about these things, before whom I also speak boldly. For I am convinced not any of these things, nothing, to be hidden from him. For this was not done in a corner.27 King Agrippa, do thou believe the prophets? I know that thou believe.28 And Agrippa said to Paul, By a little thou persuade me to become a Christian.29 And Paul said, I ever pray to God, both by little and by much, not only thee, but also all who hear me this day, to become such kind as I also am, apart from these bonds.30 And when he spoke these things, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and those who sat with them.31 And having withdrawn, they spoke to each other, saying, This man does nothing worthy of death or of bonds.32 And Agrippa said to Festus, This man could have been released, if he had not appealed Caesar.
