Jó 17

1 O meu espírito está quebrantado,

os meus dias se encurtam,

a sepultura me espera.

2 A verdade é que zombadores me rodeiam,

e tenho que ficar olhando a sua hostilidade.

3 "Dá-me, ó Deus, a garantia que exiges.

Quem, senão tu, me dará segurança?

4 Fechaste a mente deles para o entendimento

e com isso não os deixarás triunfar.

5 Se alguém denunciar os seus amigos por recompensa,

os olhos dos filhos dele fraquejarão.

6 "Mas Deus tornou o meu nome um adágio para todos,

um homem em cujo rosto os outros cospem.

7 Os meus olhos se turvaram de tristeza;

o meu corpo não passa de uma sombra.

8 Os íntegros ficam atônitos em face disso,

e os inocentes se levantam contra os ímpios.

9 Mas os justos se manterão firmes nos seus caminhos,

e os homens de mãos puras se tornarão cada vez mais fortes.

10 "Venham, porém, vocês todos,

e façam nova tentativa!

Não acharei nenhum sábio entre vocês.

11 Foram-se os meus dias, os meus planos fracassaram,

como também os desejos do meu coração.

12 Andam querendo tornar a noite em dia;

diante da aproximação das trevas, eles dizem:

‘Vem chegando a luz’.*17.12 Ou eles dizem: ‘A luz está próxima da escuridão’ ; ou ainda Eles dizem: ‘A luz está mais próxima que a escuridão’.

13 Ora, se o único lar pelo qual espero é o Sheol,*17.13 Essa palavra também pode ser traduzida por profundezas ou morte; também no versículo 16.

se estendo a minha cama nas trevas,

14 se digo ao túmulo*17.14 Ou à decomposição.

‘Você é o meu pai’,

e aos vermes:

‘Vocês são a minha mãe e a minha irmã’,

15 onde está, então, a minha esperança?

Quem poderá ver esperança para mim?

16 Descerá ela às portas do Sheol?

Desceremos juntos ao pó?".

1 My spirit is consumed, my days are extinct,

The grave is ready for me.

2 Surely there are mockers with me,

And mine eye dwelleth upon their provocation.

3 Give now a pledge, be surety for me with thyself;

Who is there that will strike hands with me?

4 For thou hast hid their heart from understanding:

Therefore shalt thou not exalt them.

5 He that denounceth his friends for a prey,

Even the eyes of his children shall fail.

6 But he hath made me a byword of the people;

And they spit in my face.

7 Mine eye also is dim by reason of sorrow,

And all my members are as a shadow.

8 Upright men shall be astonished at this,

And the innocent shall stir up himself against the godless.

9 Yet shall the righteous hold on his way,

And he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger.

10 But as for you all, come on now again;

And I shall not find a wise man among you.

11 My days are past, my purposes are broken off,

Even the thoughts of my heart.

12 They change the night into day:

The light, say they, is near unto the darkness.

13 If I look for Sheol as my house;

If I have spread my couch in the darkness;

14 If I have said to corruption, Thou art my father;

To the worm, Thou art my mother, and my sister;

15 Where then is my hope?

And as for my hope, who shall see it?

16 It shall go down to the bars of Sheol,

When once there is rest in the dust.
