* 4.0 Esse capítulo é um poema acróstico no qual cada verso começa com uma letra em ordem sucessiva do alfabeto hebraico. 1 Como o ouro perdeu o brilho!

Como o ouro fino ficou embaçado!

As pedras sagradas estão espalhadas

pelas esquinas de todas as ruas.

2 Como os preciosos filhos de Sião,

que antes valiam o seu peso em ouro,

hoje são considerados como vasos de barro,

obra das mãos de um oleiro!

3 Até os chacais oferecem o peito

para amamentar os seus filhotes,

mas o meu povo não tem mais coração;

é como as avestruzes do deserto.

4 De tanta sede, a língua dos bebês

gruda no céu da boca.

As crianças imploram pelo pão,

mas ninguém as atende.

5 Aqueles que costumavam comer iguarias

passam necessidade nas ruas.

Aqueles que se adornavam de púrpura

hoje estão prostrados sobre montes de cinza.

6 A punição do meu povo

é maior que a de Sodoma,

que foi destruída em um instante

sem que ninguém a socorresse.

7 Os seus príncipes eram mais brilhantes que a neve,

mais brancos do que o leite;

tinham o corpo mais rosado que rubis,

e a sua aparência lembrava safiras.

8 Mas agora estão mais negros do que o carvão;

não são reconhecidos nas ruas.

A sua pele enrugou-se sobre os seus ossos;

parece madeira seca.

9 Os que foram mortos à espada

estão melhor do que os que morrem de fome;

tendo sido torturados pela fome,

definham pela falta de produção das lavouras.

10 Com as próprias mãos, mulheres bondosas

cozinharam os seus próprios filhos,

que se tornaram a sua comida

quando o meu povo foi destruído.

11 O Senhor deu vazão total à sua ira;

derramou a sua grande fúria.

Ele acendeu em Sião um fogo

que consumiu os seus alicerces.

12 Os reis da terra e os povos de todo o mundo

não acreditavam que os inimigos

e os adversários pudessem entrar

pelas portas de Jerusalém.

13 Isso aconteceu por causa do pecado dos seus profetas

e das maldades dos seus sacerdotes,

os quais derramaram o sangue dos justos

no meio da cidade.

14 Hoje eles vagueiam

cegamente pelas ruas.

Tão sujos de sangue estão

que ninguém ousa tocar nas suas vestes.

15 "Vocês estão imundos!", o povo grita para eles.

"Afastem-se! Não nos toquem!"

Quando eles fogem e andam errantes,

os povos das outras nações dizem:

"Aqui eles não podem habitar".

16 O próprio Senhor os espalhou

e já não cuida deles.

Ninguém honra os sacerdotes

nem respeita os líderes.

17 Os nossos olhos estão cansados

de buscar ajuda em vão;

das nossas torres, ficávamos à espera

de uma nação que não podia salvar-nos.

18 Cada passo nosso era vigiado;

nem podíamos caminhar pelas ruas.

O nosso fim estava próximo,

os nossos dias estavam contados;

o nosso fim já havia chegado.

19 Os nossos perseguidores eram mais velozes

que as águias nos céus;

perseguiam-nos sobre as montanhas,

ficavam de tocaia contra nós no deserto.

20 O ungido do Senhor, o próprio fôlego da nossa vida,

foi capturado nas suas armadilhas.

E nós que pensávamos que sob a sua sombra

viveríamos entre as nações!

21 Alegre-se e exulte, ó Filha de Edom,

você que vive na terra de Uz.

Mas a você também será servido o cálice:

você será embriagada, e as suas roupas serão arrancadas.

22 Ó Filha de Sião, o seu castigo terminará;

o Senhor não prolongará o seu exílio.

Mas você, ó Filha de Edom, ele punirá o seu pecado

e porá à mostra a sua perversidade.

1 How is the gold become dim! how is the most pure gold changed!

The stones of the sanctuary are poured out at the head of every street.

2 The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold,

How are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter!

3 Even the jackals draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones:

The daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness.

4 The tongue of the sucking child cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst:

The young children ask bread, and no man breaketh it unto them.

5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets:

They that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills.

6 For the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the sin of Sodom,

That was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands were laid upon her.

7 Her nobles were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk;

They were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was as of sapphire.

8 Their visage is blacker than a coal; they are not known in the streets:

Their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick.

9 They that are slain with the sword are better than they that are slain with hunger;

For these pine away, stricken through, for want of the fruits of the field.

10 The hands of the pitiful women have boiled their own children;

They were their food in the destruction of the daughter of my people.

11 Jehovah hath accomplished his wrath, he hath poured out his fierce anger;

And he hath kindled a fire in Zion, which hath devoured the foundations thereof.

12 The kings of the earth believed not, neither all the inhabitants of the world,

That the adversary and the enemy would enter into the gates of Jerusalem.

13 It is because of the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests,

That have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her.

14 They wander as blind men in the streets, they are polluted with blood,

So that men cannot touch their garments.

15 Depart ye, they cried unto them, Unclean! depart, depart, touch not!

When they fled away and wandered, men said among the nations, They shall no more sojourn here.

16 The anger of Jehovah hath scattered them; he will no more regard them:

They respected not the persons of the priests, they favored not the elders.

17 Our eyes do yet fail in looking for our vain help:

In our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save.

18 They hunt our steps, so that we cannot go in our streets:

Our end is near, our days are fulfilled; for our end is come.

19 Our pursuers were swifter than the eagles of the heavens:

They chased us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness.

20 The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of Jehovah, was taken in their pits;

Of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the nations.

21 Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz:

The cup shall pass through unto thee also; thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself naked.

22 The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion; he will no more carry thee away into captivity:

He will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom; he will uncover thy sins.
