Lamentação por Nínive

1 Ai da cidade sanguinária,

repleta de fraudes

e cheia de roubos,

sempre fazendo as suas vítimas!

2 Ah, o estalo dos chicotes,

o barulho das rodas,

o galope dos cavalos

e o sacudir dos carros de guerra!

3 Cavaleiros que atacam,

espadas reluzentes

e lanças cintilantes!

Muitos mortos,

montanhas de cadáveres,

corpos sem conta,

gente que tropeça neles!

4 Tudo por causa das suas ações desenfreadas como uma prostituta atraente

e mestra de feitiçarias,

que escravizou nações com a sua prostituição,

e povos, com a sua feitiçaria.

5 "Eu estou contra você",

declara o Senhor dos Exércitos.

"Levantarei o seu vestido até a altura do seu rosto.

Mostrarei às nações a sua nudez,

e aos reinos, as suas vergonhas.

6 Jogarei coisas repugnantes sobre você

e a tratarei com desprezo;

farei de você um exemplo.

7 Todos os que a virem fugirão, dizendo:

‘Nínive está arrasada! Quem a lamentará?’.

Onde encontrarei quem a console?".

8 Acaso você é melhor do que Tebas,*3.8 Hebraico: No Amon.

situada junto ao Nilo,

rodeada de águas?

O rio era a sua defesa;

as águas, o seu muro.

9 Cuxe*3.9 Isto é, a região do alto rio Nilo. e o Egito eram a sua força ilimitada;

Pute e a Líbia estavam entre os seus aliados.

10 Apesar disso, ela foi deportada

e levada para o exílio.

Em todas as esquinas,

as suas crianças foram massacradas.

Lançaram sortes para decidir o destino dos seus nobres,

e todos os poderosos foram acorrentados.

11 Você também ficará embriagada;

irá esconder-se

e buscará um refúgio para proteger-se do inimigo.

12 Todas as suas fortalezas são como figueiras

carregadas de figos maduros;

basta sacudi-las,

e os figos caem em bocas vorazes.

13 Olhe bem para as suas tropas:

não passam de mulheres!

As suas portas estão escancaradas para os seus inimigos;

o fogo devorou as suas trancas.

14 Reserve água para o tempo do cerco!

Reforce as suas fortalezas!

Entre no barro,

pise a argamassa,

prepare a forma para os tijolos!

15 Ali o fogo consumirá você

e a espada a eliminará;

como gafanhotos devastadores, ela a devorará!

Multiplique-se como gafanhotos devastadores,

multiplique-se como gafanhotos migradores!

16 Você multiplicou os seus comerciantes,

tornando-os mais numerosos que as estrelas do céu,

mas, como gafanhotos devastadores, eles devoram o país

e, depois, voam para longe.

17 Os seus guardas são como gafanhotos migradores,

e os seus oficiais, como enxames de gafanhotos

que se ajuntam sobre os muros em dias frios;

quando o sol aparece, eles voam,

mas ninguém sabe para onde.

18 Ó rei da Assíria, os seus pastores*3.18 Ou governantes. dormem;

os seus nobres adormecem.

O seu povo está espalhado pelos montes,

e não há ninguém para reuni-lo.

19 Não há cura para a sua chaga;

a sua ferida é mortal.

Quem ouve notícias a seu respeito

bate palmas pela sua queda,

pois quem não sofreu por

sua crueldade sem limites?

1 Woe to the bloody city! it is all full of lies and rapine; the prey departeth not. 2 The noise of the whip, and the noise of the rattling of wheels, and prancing horses, and bounding chariots, 3 the horseman mounting, and the flashing sword, and the glittering spear, and a multitude of slain, and a great heap of corpses, and there is no end of the bodies; they stumble upon their bodies;— 4 because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the well-favored harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that selleth nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts. 5 Behold, I am against thee, saith Jehovah of hosts, and I will uncover thy skirts upon thy face; and I will show the nations thy nakedness, and the kingdoms thy shame. 6 And I will cast abominable filth upon thee, and make thee vile, and will set thee as a gazing-stock. 7 And it shall come to pass, that all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?

8 Art thou better than No-amon, that was situate among the rivers, that had the waters round about her; whose rampart was the sea, and her wall was of the sea? 9 Ethiopia and Egypt were her strength, and it was infinite; Put and Lubim were thy helpers. 10 Yet was she carried away, she went into captivity; her young children also were dashed in pieces at the head of all the streets; and they cast lots for her honorable men, and all her great men were bound in chains. 11 Thou also shalt be drunken; thou shalt be hid; thou also shalt seek a stronghold because of the enemy. 12 All thy fortresses shall be like fig-trees with the first-ripe figs: if they be shaken, they fall into the mouth of the eater. 13 Behold, thy people in the midst of thee are women; the gates of thy land are set wide open unto thine enemies: the fire hath devoured thy bars. 14 Draw thee water for the siege; strengthen thy fortresses; go into the clay, and tread the mortar; make strong the brickkiln. 15 There shall the fire devour thee; the sword shall cut thee off; it shall devour thee like the canker-worm: make thyself many as the canker-worm; make thyself many as the locust. 16 Thou hast multiplied thy merchants above the stars of heaven: the canker-worm ravageth, and fleeth away. 17 Thy princes are as the locusts, and thy marshals as the swarms of grasshoppers, which encamp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are. 18 Thy shepherds slumber, O king of Assyria; thy nobles are at rest; thy people are scattered upon the mountains, and there is none to gather them. 19 There is no assuaging of thy hurt; thy wound is grievous: all that hear the report of thee clap their hands over thee; for upon whom hath not thy wickedness passed continually?
