Davi faz um recenseamento militar

1 Mais uma vez, o Senhor se irou contra Israel; por isso, incitou Davi contra o povo, levando-o a fazer um recenseamento de Israel e de Judá.

2 Então, o rei disse a Joabe e aos outros comandantes do exército:*24.2 Conforme a Septuaginta. O Texto Massorético traz Joabe, o comandante do exército. Veja o versículo 4 e 1Cr 21.2.

— Vão por todas as tribos de Israel, desde Dã até Berseba, e contem o povo, para que eu saiba quantos são.

3 Joabe, porém, respondeu ao rei:

— Que o Senhor, o teu Deus, multiplique o povo por cem, e que os olhos do rei, meu senhor, o vejam! Mas por que o rei, meu senhor, deseja fazer isso?

4 No entanto, a palavra do rei prevaleceu sobre a de Joabe e sobre a dos comandantes do exército; então, eles saíram da presença do rei para contar o povo de Israel.

5 Atravessando o Jordão, acamparam em Aroer, ao sul da cidade, no vale; depois, foram para Gade e de lá para Jazer, 6 Gileade e Tatim-Hodsi, chegaram a Dã-Jaã e às proximidades de Sidom. 7 Dali seguiram na direção da fortaleza de Tiro e de todas as cidades dos heveus e dos cananeus. Por último, foram até Berseba, no Neguebe de Judá.

8 Percorreram todo o país e voltaram a Jerusalém ao fim de nove meses e vinte dias.

9 Joabe apresentou ao rei o relatório do recenseamento do povo: havia, em Israel, oitocentos mil homens capazes de manejar a espada e, em Judá, quinhentos mil.

10 Depois de contar o povo, Davi sentiu pesar no coração e disse ao Senhor:

— Pequei gravemente com o que fiz! Agora, Senhor, eu te imploro que perdoes o pecado do teu servo, porque cometi uma grande loucura!

11 Levantando-se Davi pela manhã, o Senhor já tinha falado ao profeta Gade, o vidente de Davi:

12 — Vá dizer a Davi: "Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Dou a você três opções. Escolha uma delas, e eu a executarei contra você’ ".

13 Então, Gade foi a Davi e lhe perguntou:

— O que você prefere: três*24.13 Conforme a Septuaginta. O Texto Massorético traz sete. Veja 1Cr 21.12. anos de fome na sua terra, três meses fugindo dos seus adversários, que o perseguirão, ou três dias de praga na sua terra? Pense bem e diga-me o que deverei responder àquele que me enviou.

14 Davi respondeu:

— É grande a minha angústia! Prefiro cair nas mãos do Senhor, pois grande é a sua misericórdia, do que cair nas mãos dos homens.

15 Então, o Senhor enviou uma praga sobre Israel, desde aquela manhã até a hora que tinha determinado. Morreram setenta mil homens do povo, desde Dã até Berseba. 16 Quando o anjo estendeu a mão para destruir Jerusalém, o Senhor se arrependeu de trazer essa catástrofe e disse ao anjo que destruía o povo:

— Basta! Detenha a mão!

Naquele momento, o anjo do Senhor estava perto da eira de Araúna, o jebuseu.

17 Davi, ao ver o anjo que estava matando o povo, disse ao Senhor:

— Fui eu que pequei e cometi iniquidade. Estes não passam de ovelhas. O que eles fizeram? Que o teu castigo caia sobre mim e sobre a minha família!

Davi edifica um altar

18 Naquele mesmo dia, Gade foi dizer a Davi:

— Vá e edifique um altar ao Senhor na eira de Araúna, o jebuseu.

19 Davi foi para lá, em obediência à palavra que Gade tinha dado em nome do Senhor. 20 Quando Araúna viu que o rei e os seus soldados vinham ao seu encontro, saiu e prostrou-se diante do rei com o rosto em terra 21 e disse:

— Por que o meu senhor e rei veio a este seu servo?

Davi respondeu:

— Para comprar a sua eira e edificar nela um altar ao Senhor, a fim de que cesse a praga sobre o povo.

22 Araúna, porém, disse a Davi:

— O meu senhor e rei pode ficar com o que desejar e oferecê-lo em sacrifício. Aqui estão os bois para o holocausto,*24.22 Isto é, sacrifício totalmente queimado; também nos versículos 24 e 25. o debulhador e o jugo dos bois para a lenha. 23 Ó rei, tudo isso dou a ti.

Ele acrescentou:

— Que o Senhor, o teu Deus, se agrade de ti, ó rei!

24 O rei, porém, respondeu a Araúna:

— Não! Faço questão de pagar o preço justo. Não oferecerei ao Senhor, o meu Deus, holocaustos que não me custem nada.

Assim, Davi comprou a eira e os bois por cinquenta siclos*24.24 Isto é, cerca de 575 gramas. de prata. 25 Davi edificou ali um altar ao Senhor e ofereceu holocaustos e ofertas de comunhão. Então, o Senhor aceitou as súplicas em favor da terra e deu fim à praga que destruía Israel.

1 And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah. 2 For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.*24.2 Go: or, Compass 3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing? 4 Notwithstanding the king’s word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

5 And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:*24.5 river: or, valley 6 Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,*24.6 land of Tahtim-hodshi: or, nether land newly inhabited 7 And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba. 8 So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days. 9 And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

10 And David’s heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly. 11 For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying, 12 Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee. 13 So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days’ pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me. 14 And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.*24.14 are great: or, are many

15 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men. 16 And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.*24.16 Araunah: also called, Ornan 17 And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father’s house.

18 And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.*24.18 Araunah: Heb. Araniah 19 And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded. 20 And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. 21 And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people. 22 And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. 23 All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee. 24 And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. 25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
