A fé no Filho de Deus
1 Todo aquele que crê que Jesus é o Cristo é nascido de Deus, e todo aquele que ama ao Pai ama também o que dele foi gerado. 2 Desta forma sabemos que amamos os filhos de Deus: amando a Deus e obedecendo aos seus mandamentos. 3 Porque nisto consiste o amor a Deus: obedecer aos seus mandamentos. E os seus mandamentos não são pesados. 4 Todo aquele que é nascido de Deus vence o mundo. E esta é a vitória que vence o mundo: a nossa fé. 5 Quem é aquele que vence o mundo, senão o que crê que Jesus é o Filho de Deus?
6 Este é aquele que veio por meio de água e sangue, Jesus Cristo: não somente por água, mas por água e sangue. E o Espírito é quem dá testemunho, porque o Espírito é a verdade. 7 Há três que dão testemunho: 8 o Espírito,5.7,8 Há manuscritos da Vulgata que trazem testemunho no céu: o Pai, a Palavra e o Espírito Santo, e estes três são um. 8 E há três que testificam na terra: o Espírito (essa passagem não consta no texto de nenhum manuscrito grego anterior ao século XIV). a água e o sangue; e os três são unânimes. 9 Nós aceitamos o testemunho dos homens, mas o testemunho de Deus tem maior valor, pois é o testemunho de Deus, que ele dá acerca do Filho. 10 Quem crê no Filho de Deus tem em si mesmo esse testemunho. Quem não crê em Deus faz dele mentiroso, porque não crê no testemunho que Deus dá acerca do seu Filho. 11 E este é o testemunho: Deus nos deu a vida eterna, e essa vida está no seu Filho. 12 Quem tem o Filho tem a vida; quem não tem o Filho de Deus não tem a vida.
Observações finais
13 Escrevi estas coisas a vocês que creem no nome do Filho de Deus para que saibam que têm a vida eterna. 14 Esta é a confiança que temos ao nos aproximar de Deus: se pedimos alguma coisa de acordo com a vontade dele, ele nos ouve. 15 Assim, se sabemos que ele nos ouve em tudo o que pedimos, sabemos que temos dele o que pedimos.
16 Se alguém vir o seu irmão cometer um pecado que não leva à morte, ore, e Deus dará vida ao que pecou. Refiro-me àqueles cujo pecado não leva à morte. Há pecado que leva à morte; não estou dizendo que se deva orar por este. 17 Toda injustiça é pecado, mas há pecado que não leva à morte.
18 Sabemos que todo aquele que é nascido de Deus não peca, mas Deus protege aquele que dele nasceu,5.18 Ou aquele que nasceu de Deus a si mesmo se protege. e o Maligno não toca nele. 19 Sabemos que somos de Deus e que o mundo todo está sob o poder do Maligno. 20 Sabemos também que o Filho de Deus veio e nos deu entendimento para que conheçamos aquele que é o Verdadeiro. E nós estamos naquele que é o Verdadeiro, em seu Filho, Jesus Cristo. Este é o verdadeiro Deus e a vida eterna.

Faith in the Incarnate Son of God
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
6 This is the one who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the5:7,8 Late manuscripts of the Vulgate testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 8 And there are three that testify on earth: the (not found in any Greek manuscript before the fourteenth century) Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement. 9 We accept human testimony, but God’s testimony is greater because it is the testimony of God, which he has given about his Son. 10 Whoever believes in the Son of God accepts this testimony. Whoever does not believe God has made him out to be a liar, because they have not believed the testimony God has given about his Son. 11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
Concluding Affirmations
13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.
16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.
18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps them safe, and the evil one cannot harm them. 19 We know that we are children of God, and that the whole world is under the control of the evil one. 20 We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true by being in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.
