O Senhor aparece a Salomão

1 Quando Salomão acabou de construir o templo do Senhor, o palácio real e tudo o mais que desejara construir, 2 o Senhor lhe apareceu pela segunda vez, como lhe havia aparecido em Gibeom. 3 O Senhor lhe disse:

— Ouvi a oração e a súplica por misericórdia que você fez diante de mim; consagrei este templo que você construiu, para que nele eu ponha o meu nome para sempre. Os meus olhos e o meu coração sempre estarão ali.

4 — Se você andar diante de mim com integridade de coração e com retidão, como fez Davi, o seu pai, e se fizer tudo o que ordeno a você, obedecendo aos meus estatutos e às minhas ordenanças, 5 firmarei para sempre o trono do seu reinado sobre Israel, conforme prometi a Davi, o seu pai, quando eu lhe disse: "Nunca faltará um descendente seu que lhe suceda no trono de Israel".

6 — Se, porém, vocês ou os seus filhos se afastarem de mim e não obedecerem aos mandamentos e aos estatutos que lhes dei, e prestarem culto a outros deuses e adorá-los, 7 desarraigarei Israel da terra que lhes dei e lançarei para longe da minha presença este templo que consagrei ao meu nome. Israel se tornará, então, provérbio e objeto de zombaria entre todos os povos. 8 Embora este templo seja agora imponente, todos os que passarem por ele ficarão espantados, zombarão e perguntarão: "Por que o Senhor fez uma coisa dessa a esta terra e a este templo?". 9 A resposta será: "Porque abandonaram o Senhor, o seu Deus, que tirou os seus antepassados do Egito, e se apegaram a outros deuses, adorando-os e prestando-lhes culto; por isso, o Senhor trouxe sobre eles toda esta desgraça".

Outros feitos de Salomão

10 Depois de vinte anos, durante os quais Salomão construiu os dois edifícios, o templo do Senhor e o palácio real, 11 o rei Salomão deu vinte cidades da Galileia a Hirão, rei de Tiro, pois Hirão lhe havia fornecido toda a madeira de cedro e de junípero e o ouro que ele desejou. 12 Quando este veio de Tiro para ver as cidades que Salomão lhe dera, não gostou.

13 — Que cidades são estas que tu me deste, meu irmão? — ele perguntou.

Chamou-as terra de Cabul,*9.13 Cabul assemelha-se à palavra hebraica que significa inútil. nome que elas têm até hoje. 14 Hirão tinha enviado ao rei cento e vinte talentos*9.14 Isto é, cerca de 4 toneladas. de ouro.

15 O rei Salomão impôs trabalhos forçados para que se construísse o templo do Senhor, o seu próprio palácio, o Milo,*9.15 Ou aterro; também no versículo 24. o muro de Jerusalém, bem como Hazor, Megido e Gezer. 16 O faraó, rei do Egito, havia atacado e conquistado Gezer. Incendiou a cidade e matou os seus habitantes, que eram cananeus, e a deu como presente de casamento à sua filha, mulher de Salomão. 17 Assim, Salomão reconstruiu Gezer. Ele construiu Bete-Horom Baixa, 18 Baalate e Tadmor,*9.18 Ou Tamar. no deserto dessa região, 19 bem como todas as cidades de armazenamento e as cidades onde ficavam as suas carruagens e os seus cavalos.*9.19 Ou condutores de carruagens. Construiu tudo o que desejou em Jerusalém, no Líbano e em todo o território sob o seu domínio.

20 Havia ainda sobreviventes dos amorreus, dos hititas, dos ferezeus, dos heveus e dos jebuseus, os quais não eram israelitas. 21 Salomão recrutou para o trabalho forçado os descendentes de todos esses povos que ainda viviam na terra, pois os israelitas não conseguiram separá-los para destruição;*9.21 O termo hebraico indica um ato de consagração irrevogável a Deus, geralmente por meio da destruição de um objeto ou de seres vivos. e nesse trabalho forçado permanecem até o dia de hoje. 22 Salomão, porém, não obrigou nenhum israelita a trabalhos forçados; estes eram os seus homens de guerra, oficiais, comandantes dos carros de guerra e condutores de carros. 23 Também eram israelitas os principais oficiais encarregados das obras de Salomão: quinhentos e cinquenta oficiais que supervisionavam os trabalhadores.

24 Somente depois que a filha do faraó se mudou da Cidade de Davi para o palácio que Salomão havia construído para ela, foi que ele construiu o Milo.*9.24 Ou aterro.

25 Três vezes por ano, Salomão oferecia holocaustos*9.25 Isto é, sacrifícios totalmente queimados. e ofertas de comunhão no altar que havia construído para o Senhor, ao mesmo tempo em que queimava incenso diante do Senhor. Assim, Salomão concluiu o templo.

26 O rei Salomão também construiu navios em Eziom-Geber, que fica perto de Elate, na terra de Edom, às margens do mar Vermelho.*9.26 Ou mar de Juncos.27 Hirão enviou em navios os seus marinheiros, homens experimentados que conheciam o mar, para trabalharem com os marinheiros de Salomão. 28 Navegaram até Ofir e de lá trouxeram quatrocentos e vinte talentos de ouro*9.28 Isto é, cerca de 14 toneladas. para o rei Salomão.

The Lord Appears to Solomon

1 When Solomon had finished building the temple of the Lord and the royal palace, and had achieved all he had desired to do, 2 the Lord appeared to him a second time, as he had appeared to him at Gibeon. 3 The Lord said to him:

"I have heard the prayer and plea you have made before me; I have consecrated this temple, which you have built, by putting my Name there forever. My eyes and my heart will always be there.

4 "As for you, if you walk before me faithfully with integrity of heart and uprightness, as David your father did, and do all I command and observe my decrees and laws, 5 I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised David your father when I said, ‘You shall never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.’

6 "But if you*9:6 The Hebrew is plural. or your descendants turn away from me and do not observe the commands and decrees I have given you*9:6 The Hebrew is plural. and go off to serve other gods and worship them, 7 then I will cut off Israel from the land I have given them and will reject this temple I have consecrated for my Name. Israel will then become a byword and an object of ridicule among all peoples. 8 This temple will become a heap of rubble. All*9:8 See some Septuagint manuscripts, Old Latin, Syriac, Arabic and Targum; Hebrew And though this temple is now imposing, all who pass by will be appalled and will scoff and say, ‘Why has the Lord done such a thing to this land and to this temple?’ 9 People will answer, ‘Because they have forsaken the Lord their God, who brought their ancestors out of Egypt, and have embraced other gods, worshiping and serving them—that is why the Lord brought all this disaster on them.’ "

Solomon’s Other Activities

10 At the end of twenty years, during which Solomon built these two buildings—the temple of the Lord and the royal palace— 11 King Solomon gave twenty towns in Galilee to Hiram king of Tyre, because Hiram had supplied him with all the cedar and juniper and gold he wanted. 12 But when Hiram went from Tyre to see the towns that Solomon had given him, he was not pleased with them. 13 "What kind of towns are these you have given me, my brother?" he asked. And he called them the Land of Kabul,*9:13 Kabul sounds like the Hebrew for good-for-nothing. a name they have to this day. 14 Now Hiram had sent to the king 120 talents*9:14 That is, about 4 1/2 tons or about 4 metric tons of gold.

15 Here is the account of the forced labor King Solomon conscripted to build the Lord’s temple, his own palace, the terraces,*9:15 Or the Millo; also in verse 24 the wall of Jerusalem, and Hazor, Megiddo and Gezer. 16 (Pharaoh king of Egypt had attacked and captured Gezer. He had set it on fire. He killed its Canaanite inhabitants and then gave it as a wedding gift to his daughter, Solomon’s wife. 17 And Solomon rebuilt Gezer.) He built up Lower Beth Horon, 18 Baalath, and Tadmor*9:18 The Hebrew may also be read Tamar. in the desert, within his land, 19 as well as all his store cities and the towns for his chariots and for his horses*9:19 Or charioteers—whatever he desired to build in Jerusalem, in Lebanon and throughout all the territory he ruled.

20 There were still people left from the Amorites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites (these peoples were not Israelites). 21 Solomon conscripted the descendants of all these peoples remaining in the land—whom the Israelites could not exterminate*9:21 The Hebrew term refers to the irrevocable giving over of things or persons to the Lord, often by totally destroying them.—to serve as slave labor, as it is to this day. 22 But Solomon did not make slaves of any of the Israelites; they were his fighting men, his government officials, his officers, his captains, and the commanders of his chariots and charioteers. 23 They were also the chief officials in charge of Solomon’s projects—550 officials supervising those who did the work.

24 After Pharaoh’s daughter had come up from the City of David to the palace Solomon had built for her, he constructed the terraces.

25 Three times a year Solomon sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings on the altar he had built for the Lord, burning incense before the Lord along with them, and so fulfilled the temple obligations.

26 King Solomon also built ships at Ezion Geber, which is near Elath in Edom, on the shore of the Red Sea.*9:26 Or the Sea of Reeds27 And Hiram sent his men—sailors who knew the sea—to serve in the fleet with Solomon’s men. 28 They sailed to Ophir and brought back 420 talents*9:28 That is, about 16 tons or about 14 metric tons of gold, which they delivered to King Solomon.
