1 Simão Pedro, servo e apóstolo de Jesus Cristo,
Àqueles que, pela justiça do nosso Deus e Salvador Jesus Cristo, receberam conosco uma fé igualmente preciosa:
2 Graça e paz sejam multiplicadas a vocês, pelo pleno conhecimento de Deus e de Jesus, o nosso Senhor.
Certeza do nosso chamado e da nossa eleição
3 O seu divino poder nos deu tudo de que necessitamos para a vida e a piedade, por meio do conhecimento daquele que nos chamou para a sua própria glória e virtude. 4 Dessa maneira, ele nos deu as suas grandiosas e preciosas promessas, para que por elas vocês se tornassem participantes da natureza divina, tendo escapado da corrupção que há no mundo, causada pelos maus desejos.
5 Por essa razão, empenhem-se para acrescentar à sua fé a virtude; à virtude, o conhecimento; 6 ao conhecimento, o domínio próprio; ao domínio próprio, a perseverança; à perseverança, a piedade; 7 à piedade, a fraternidade; à fraternidade, o amor. 8 Porque, se essas qualidades existirem e estiverem crescendo na vida de vocês, elas impedirão que sejam ineficazes e improdutivos no conhecimento do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo. 9 Todavia, se alguém não as possui, está cego, só vê o que está perto, esquecendo-se da purificação dos seus antigos pecados.
10 Portanto, irmãos, empenhem-se ainda mais para consolidar o chamado e a eleição de vocês, pois, se agirem dessa forma, jamais tropeçarão 11 e, assim, a entrada ao reino eterno do nosso Senhor e Salvador Jesus Cristo será inteiramente suprida a vocês.
A veracidade das Escrituras
12 Por isso, sempre terei o cuidado de lembrá-los destas coisas, mesmo que já as conheçam e estejam fortalecidos na presente verdade. 13 Penso que convém, enquanto eu estiver neste corpo, despertar a memória de vocês, 14 porque sei que deixarei este corpo em breve, como o nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo já me revelou. 15 Eu me empenharei para que, também depois da minha partida, vocês sejam sempre capazes de lembrar-se destas coisas.
16 De fato, não seguimos fábulas engenhosamente inventadas quando falamos a vocês a respeito do poder e da vinda do nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo; ao contrário, fomos testemunhas oculares da sua majestade. 17 Ele recebeu honra e glória da parte de Deus Pai, quando da Suprema Glória lhe foi dirigida a voz que disse: "Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem tenho prazer".1.17 Mt 17.5; Mc 9.7; Lc 9.35.18 Nós mesmos ouvimos essa voz vinda dos céus quando estávamos com ele no monte santo.
19 Assim, temos ainda mais firme a palavra dos profetas, e vocês farão bem se nela prestarem atenção, como a uma lâmpada que brilha em um lugar escuro, até que o dia clareie e a estrela da manhã nasça no coração de vocês. 20 Antes de mais nada, saibam que nenhuma profecia da Escritura é de interpretação particular, 21 pois jamais a profecia teve origem na vontade humana, mas homens1.21 Há manuscritos que trazem homens santos. falaram da parte de Deus, guiados pelo Espírito Santo.

To those who through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ have received a faith as precious as ours:
2 Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.
Confirming One’s Calling and Election
3 His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; 6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; 7 and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,1:10 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family. make every effort to confirm your calling and election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Prophecy of Scripture
12 So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have. 13 I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, 14 because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me. 15 And I will make every effort to see that after my departure you will always be able to remember these things.
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."1:17 Matt. 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:3518 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
19 We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. 21 For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
