1 No terceiro dia, houve um casamento em Caná da Galileia. A mãe de Jesus estava ali. 2 Jesus e os seus discípulos também haviam sido convidados para o casamento. 3 Tendo acabado o vinho, a mãe de Jesus lhe disse:

— Eles não têm mais vinho.

4 Jesus respondeu:

— Que temos nós em comum, mulher? A minha hora ainda não chegou.

5 A sua mãe disse aos serviçais:

— Façam tudo o que ele mandar.

6 Ali perto havia seis potes de pedra, do tipo usado pelos judeus para as purificações cerimoniais. Em cada pote cabiam entre duas e três metretas.*2.6 Isto é, cerca de 75 a 115 litros.

7 Jesus disse aos serviçais:

— Encham os potes com água.

E os encheram até a borda.

8 Então, Jesus lhes disse:

— Agora, levem um pouco ao encarregado da festa.

Eles assim o fizeram, 9 e o encarregado da festa provou a água que fora transformada em vinho, sem saber de onde este viera, embora os serviçais que haviam tirado a água soubessem disso. Então, chamou o noivo 10 e disse:

— Todos servem primeiro o melhor vinho e, depois que os convidados já beberam bastante, o vinho inferior é servido; você, porém, guardou o melhor até agora.

11 Este sinal milagroso, em Caná da Galileia, foi o primeiro que Jesus realizou. Revelou, assim, a sua glória, e os seus discípulos creram nele.

12 Depois disso, ele desceu a Cafarnaum com a sua mãe, os seus irmãos e os seus discípulos. Ali ficaram durante alguns dias.

13 Quando já se aproximava a Páscoa judaica, Jesus subiu a Jerusalém. 14 No pátio do templo, encontrou alguns vendendo bois, ovelhas e pombas, e outros sentados diante de mesas, trocando dinheiro. 15 Então, ele fez um chicote de cordas e expulsou todos do templo, bem como as ovelhas e os bois. Espalhou as moedas dos cambistas, virou as suas mesas 16 e disse aos que vendiam pombas:

— Tirem estas coisas daqui! Parem de fazer da casa do meu Pai um mercado!

17 Os seus discípulos lembraram-se do que está escrito: "O zelo pela tua casa me consumirá".*2.17 Sl 69.9.

18 Então, os judeus lhe perguntaram:

— Que sinal milagroso pode mostrar-nos como prova da sua autoridade para fazer tudo isso?

19 Jesus lhes respondeu:

— Destruam este templo, e eu o levantarei em três dias.

20 Os judeus responderam:

— Este templo levou quarenta e seis anos para ser edificado, e você o levantará em três dias?

21 Contudo, o templo ao qual ele se referia era o seu corpo. 22 Assim, depois que ressuscitou dentre os mortos, os seus discípulos lembraram-se do que ele tinha dito. Então, creram na Escritura e na palavra que Jesus dissera.

23 Enquanto estava em Jerusalém, na Festa da Páscoa, muitos creram no seu nome*2.23 Ou creram nele. porque viram os sinais milagrosos que ele realizava. 24 Jesus, porém, não se confiava a eles, pois conhecia a todos. 25 Não precisava que ninguém lhe desse testemunho a respeito do homem, pois ele bem sabia o que havia dentro do ser humano.

1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus’ mother said to him, "They have no more wine."

4 "Woman,* 2:4 The Greek for Woman does not denote any disrespect. why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My hour has not yet come."

5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you."

6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.*2:6 Or from about 75 to about 115 liters

7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.

8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."

They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now."

11 What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

12 After this he went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. There they stayed for a few days.

13 When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14 In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep and doves, and others sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 So he made a whip out of cords, and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle; he scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. 16 To those who sold doves he said, "Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!"17 His disciples remembered that it is written: "Zeal for your house will consume me."*2:17 Psalm 69:9

18 The Jews then responded to him, "What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?"

19 Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days."

20 They replied, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and you are going to raise it in three days?" 21 But the temple he had spoken of was his body. 22 After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

23 Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Festival, many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.*2:23 Or in him24 But Jesus would not entrust himself to them, for he knew all people. 25 He did not need any testimony about mankind, for he knew what was in each person.
