A acusação do Senhor contra Israel

1 Ouçam o que diz o Senhor:

"Fique em pé, defenda a sua causa diante dos montes;

que as colinas ouçam o que você tem para dizer.

2 "Ouçam, ó montes, a acusação do Senhor;

escutem, alicerces eternos da terra.

Pois o Senhor tem uma acusação contra o seu povo;

ele entra em juízo contra Israel.

3 "Meu povo, o que fiz contra você?

Fui muito exigente? Responda-me.

4 Eu o tirei do Egito

e o redimi da terra da escravidão;

enviei Moisés, Arão e Miriã

para conduzir você.

5 Meu povo, lembre-se do que Balaque,

rei de Moabe, tramou

e do que Balaão, filho de Beor, respondeu.

Recorde-se da viagem que você fez desde Sitim até Gilgal

e reconheça que os atos do Senhor são justos."

6 Com que eu poderia comparecer diante do Senhor

e curvar-me diante do Deus exaltado?

Deveria oferecer holocaustos*6.6 Isto é, sacrifícios totalmente queimados.

de bezerros de um ano?

7 Ficaria o Senhor satisfeito com milhares de carneiros,

com dez mil ribeiros de azeite?

Devo oferecer o meu primogênito por causa da minha transgressão,

o fruto do meu corpo, por causa do pecado que cometi?

8 Ele mostrou a você, ó homem,

o que é bom e o que o Senhor exige de você:

pratique a justiça, ame a lealdade

e ande humildemente com o seu Deus.

A culpa e o castigo de Israel

9 A voz do Senhor clama à cidade;

é sensato temer o seu nome!

"Prestem atenção na vara

e naquele que a designou!

10 Devo ainda me esquecer dos tesouros*6.10 Ou Acaso existem ainda tesouros. da sua impiedade, ó casa ímpia,

e da medida falsificada, que é maldita?

11 Devo considerar puro alguém com balanças desonestas

e com uma bolsa de pesos falsos?

12 Os ricos que vivem entre vocês estão repletos de violência;

o seu povo é mentiroso,

e a língua deles fala enganosamente.

13 Por isso, eu mesmo os farei sofrer

e os arruinarei por causa dos seus pecados.

14 Vocês comerão, mas não ficarão satisfeitos;

continuarão de estômago vazio.

Vocês ajuntarão, mas nada preservarão,

porque o que guardarem à espada entregarei.

15 Vocês plantarão, mas não colherão;

espremerão azeitonas, mas não se ungirão com o azeite;

espremerão uvas, mas não beberão o vinho.

16 Vocês obedecem aos decretos de Onri

e a todas as práticas da família de Acabe,

e seguem os conselhos deles.

Por isso, eu os entregarei à ruína,

e o seu povo, ao desprezo.

The Lord’s Case Against Israel

1 Listen to what the Lord says:

"Stand up, plead my case before the mountains;

let the hills hear what you have to say.

2 "Hear, you mountains, the Lord’s accusation;

listen, you everlasting foundations of the earth.

For the Lord has a case against his people;

he is lodging a charge against Israel.

3 "My people, what have I done to you?

How have I burdened you? Answer me.

4 I brought you up out of Egypt

and redeemed you from the land of slavery.

I sent Moses to lead you,

also Aaron and Miriam.

5 My people, remember

what Balak king of Moab plotted

and what Balaam son of Beor answered.

Remember your journey from Shittim to Gilgal,

that you may know the righteous acts of the Lord."

6 With what shall I come before the Lord

and bow down before the exalted God?

Shall I come before him with burnt offerings,

with calves a year old?

7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,

with ten thousand rivers of olive oil?

Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression,

the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good.

And what does the Lord require of you?

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly*6:8 Or prudently with your God.

Israel’s Guilt and Punishment

9 Listen! The Lord is calling to the city—

and to fear your name is wisdom—

"Heed the rod and the One who appointed it.*6:9 The meaning of the Hebrew for this line is uncertain.

10 Am I still to forget your ill-gotten treasures, you wicked house,

and the short ephah,*6:10 An ephah was a dry measure. which is accursed?

11 Shall I acquit someone with dishonest scales,

with a bag of false weights?

12 Your rich people are violent;

your inhabitants are liars

and their tongues speak deceitfully.

13 Therefore, I have begun to destroy you,

to ruin*6:13 Or Therefore, I will make you ill and destroy you; / I will ruin you because of your sins.

14 You will eat but not be satisfied;

your stomach will still be empty.*6:14 The meaning of the Hebrew for this word is uncertain.

You will store up but save nothing,

because what you save*6:14 Or You will press toward birth but not give birth, / and what you bring to birth I will give to the sword.

15 You will plant but not harvest;

you will press olives but not use the oil,

you will crush grapes but not drink the wine.

16 You have observed the statutes of Omri

and all the practices of Ahab’s house;

you have followed their traditions.

Therefore I will give you over to ruin

and your people to derision;

you will bear the scorn of the nations.*6:16 Septuagint; Hebrew scorn due my people"
