1 Meus irmãos, como crentes em nosso glorioso Senhor Jesus Cristo, não tratem as pessoas com parcialidade. 2 Suponham que na sinagoga de vocês entre um homem com anel de ouro e roupas finas e também entre um pobre com roupas velhas e sujas. 3 Se vocês derem atenção especial ao homem que está vestido com roupas finas e disserem: "Aqui está um lugar apropriado para o senhor", mas disserem ao pobre: "Você, fique em pé ali", ou: "Sente-se no chão, junto ao estrado onde ponho os meus pés", 4 não farão distinção entre vocês, julgando com más intenções?
5 Ouçam, meus amados irmãos: acaso Deus não escolheu os que são pobres aos olhos do mundo para que sejam ricos na fé e herdem o reino que ele prometeu aos que o amam? 6 Mas vocês desprezam o pobre. Não são os ricos que oprimem vocês? Não são eles que os arrastam para os tribunais? 7 Não são eles que difamam o bom nome que sobre vocês foi invocado?2.7 Ou é invocado por vocês.
8 Se vocês de fato obedecerem à lei do reino, conforme a Escritura afirma: "Ame ao seu próximo como a você mesmo",2.8 Lv 19.18. agem corretamente. 9 Mas, se tratarem os outros com parcialidade, cometem pecado e serão condenados pela lei como transgressores. 10 Pois quem obedece a toda a lei, mas tropeça em apenas um ponto, torna-se culpado de quebrá-la inteiramente. 11 Porque aquele que disse: "Não adultere"2.11 Êx 20.14; Dt 5.18. também disse: "Não assassine".2.11 Êx 20.13; Dt 5.17. Se você não comete adultério, mas comete assassinato, torna-se transgressor da lei.
12 Falem e ajam como quem vai ser julgado pela lei da liberdade, 13 porque será exercido juízo sem misericórdia sobre quem não foi misericordioso. A misericórdia triunfa sobre o juízo!
Fé e obras
14 De que adianta, meus irmãos, alguém dizer que tem fé, se não tem obras? Acaso a fé pode salvá-lo? 15 Se um irmão ou uma irmã precisar de roupas e do alimento de cada dia 16 e um de vocês lhe disser: "Vá em paz, aqueça-se e alimente-se até satisfazer-se", sem, porém, lhe dar o que necessita, de que adianta? 17 Assim também a fé, por si só, se não é acompanhada de obras, está morta.
18 Contudo, alguém dirá: "Você tem fé; eu tenho obras".
Mostre-me a sua fé sem2.18 Há manuscritos que trazem pelas. obras, e eu mostrarei a minha fé pelas obras. 19 Você crê que existe um só Deus? Muito bem! Até mesmo os demônios creem — e estremecem!
20 Insensato! Quer certificar-se de que a fé sem obras é inútil?2.20 Há manuscritos que trazem morta.21 Não foi pelas obras que Abraão, o nosso pai, foi justificado quando ofereceu o seu filho Isaque sobre o altar? 22 Você pode ver que tanto a fé como as obras estavam atuando juntas, e a fé foi aperfeiçoada pelas obras. 23 Cumpriu-se a Escritura que diz: "Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi atribuído como justiça",2.23 Gn 15.6. e ele foi chamado amigo de Deus.2.23 2Cr 20.7; Is 41.8.24 Vejam que uma pessoa é justificada pelas obras, não apenas pela fé.
25 Caso semelhante é o de Raabe, a prostituta: não foi ela justificada pelas obras, quando acolheu os espias e os fez sair por outro caminho? 26 Portanto, como o corpo sem espírito está morto, assim a fé sem obras está morta.
Favoritism Forbidden
1 My brothers and sisters, believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ must not show favoritism. 2 Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in filthy old clothes also comes in. 3 If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, "Here’s a good seat for you," but say to the poor man, "You stand there" or "Sit on the floor by my feet," 4 have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
5 Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are blaspheming the noble name of him to whom you belong?
8 If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, "Love your neighbor as yourself,"2:8 Lev. 19:18 you are doing right. 9 But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. 11 For he who said, "You shall not commit adultery,"2:11 Exodus 20:14; Deut. 5:18 also said, "You shall not murder."2:11 Exodus 20:13; Deut. 5:17 If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.
12 Speak and act as those who are going to be judged by the law that gives freedom, 13 because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.
Faith and Deeds
14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, "Go in peace; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.
18 But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder.
20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless2:20 Some early manuscripts dead? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,"2:23 Gen. 15:6 and he was called God’s friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone.
25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.
